OSMOSIS - Open Source Management Of Secure Information System Sounds cool and catchy don't you think? How about a logo of data passing through a "membrane"?

Outlook's e-mail storage file (typically *.PST) is usually stored somewhere in your Docs & Settings. If your contacts are stored in Windows Address Book though, you'll need to export them somehow. You can copy the PST over to your new Docs & Settings, but it may not preserve the contacts location (fixable from within Outlook though), however, importing should stop this from happening.

Our policy is to immediately ban the internet for any student caught using a proxy bypass for a fortnight. They also get a disciplinary letter explaining that they've breached the acceptable use policy they or their parents/guardian signed when they applied for an IT account. We also try to ban as many proxy bypass sites as possible, but new ones keep popping up all the time.

Not experienced it, but maybe the service manual will help: hp laserjet 1300 service manual - Google Search There should be a section on checking the paper path.

I've created my own installer for "eAdministrator" using NSIS (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/). It takes the path to the ESM server as an argument and can install silently. I've yet to test it thoroughly, but so far it seems to install it properly, setting the required permissions and registry settings. Not sure about the legal ramifications for distributing it though... If there's enough interest I could e-mail Pearson VUE for permission. Or perhaps post the NSIS script...

I wouldn't use wi-fi to connect switches in various buildings. Fastest wi-fi is a theoretical 108Mb/s I believe. Transmission rate decreases with range and other factors such as trees and walls. 2.4Ghz frequency that wi-fi uses is severely affected by water. You'd have to use directional antennas too and some special routers to increase security and transmission range. It's possible to use a 5.4Ghz frequency (20x better water penetration) but that depends on getting a licence from Ofcom. Antenna's also make a good target - for kids and for lightning. I would recommend fibre as it's faster and more reliable. It will also allow for future expansion. It may cost more than wi-fi solution, but it's the best way to go. And tell your SBM that you don't just leave fibre cables lying around - repairing a cable is extremely expensive and sometimes cheaper to just replace it if it's not too long - so most places will bury it or use an existing conduit. We use fibre between all our networked buildings. Try these sites for more info on wi-fi if you want: http://www.binarywolf.com/249/wifi_basics.htm http://www.solwise.co.uk/los.htm I've looked at lasers too, but they're extremely expensive: http://www.cablemanstore.co.uk/erol.html take a look at the GeoDesy stuff...

Ooops! Quite right, doesn't make much sense out-of-context! And it's actually wrong - my initial thought after running "help sh" in a terminal was that it was not Bash but something else. I should have used "man sh" - more descriptive. I'm not a Linux guru, but I have been using Ubuntu now for a few months. You don't need to use "sh ./installnet.sh" if you make the script executable. In a terminal type: sudo chmod +x installnet.sh then you can remove the "sh". If your script still won't work, paste the full output from the terminal here for us to examine.
-
Try running the script like this: sudo ./installnet.sh I typed in "help sh" and got shift: shift [n] The positional parameters from $N+1 ... are renamed to $1 ... If N is not given, it is assumed to be 1. shopt: shopt [-pqsu] [-o long-option] optname [optname...] Toggle the values of variables controlling optional behavior. The -s flag means to enable (set) each OPTNAME; the -u flag unsets each OPTNAME. The -q flag suppresses output; the exit status indicates whether each OPTNAME is set or unset. The -o option restricts the OPTNAMEs to those defined for use with `set -o'. With no options, or with the -p option, a list of all settable options is displayed, with an indication of whether or not each is set.

Possibly a slight typo in the above line?

I showed my colleague this thread as he's been trying to get Eclipse.NET working too. He says it might work if you stop the SQL service first and/or compress the DB.

We've got a number of Promissor clients installed here too and I've never seen this problem occur. As I understand it, the software is supposed to automatically take over the screen as you don't want test takers taking a sneak peek at the internet for answers. I'd re-install the client software and if that still doesn't work, phone their helpdesk - it might be a known issue with a workaround.

We have major problems getting ECDL to work in our college. We have spent over a year trying to get the software from Litmus Learning working properly - it always seems to break down very quickly. We can't allocate PC's solely for ECDL use and our policy is no users are allowed to use PC's with admin rights. I'd like to hear from anyone that has an ECDL system installed in their school/college and how it works for you and any problems with installation. This summer we will be reviewing ECDL and we would like to know what else is available. Thanks.

Just another thought, we have some PC's with a BIOS that allows you to set it to view only for users.

Music software - interactive whiteboard and desktop?

Shareware but isn't crippled: http://www.cockos.com/reaper/ There are some Linux distributions geared for multimedia/music: http://musix.org.ar/en/index.html http://ubuntustudio.org/ For serious notation-based music, our college uses Sibelius (expensive option though). How about FruityLoops? Can be complicated, but fun. -

Never used this but it was mentioned in a magazine article along with Scratch as a great introduction to programming: http://phrogram.com/

How about "banner" pages? You switch it on in the driver and it prints a single sheet with the username (and other info I can't remember) before the job prints.

P.S. Try page 142.

It's not easy... You can download the service manual in multipart RAR's from: http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/17582/HP_LaserJet%202300.html
