  1. Using two Cisco SG500XG-8F8T switches connected to a Nimble CS215 via 10GB here, using both the SFP+ and copper ports over 5 hosts. The reason i chose those switches was due to the larger buffer size, so I think someone is giving you duff information. 16mb shared buffer is more than enough, basically so long as you have a minimum of 256kb per port (whether they state per port or shared buffer doesn't matter, if it's shared just divide it by the number of ports) then you have enough for iSCSI to be reliable. The 1950 by contrast only has 1.5mb or 3mb shared buffers depending on the size of the switch, so it's rightfully not adequate for a storage network. EDIT: I'm also using some 1950's as the next step from the core to each of the 5 network segments here. They seem to do a good job for just general L2 switching at a decent price with 10GB and POE....early firmwares were buggy as hell though, seem a lot better now.
  2. The answer to this is probably no...but is it possible to find out who entered certain information into a students details?
  3. Considering you're on such a tight budget look at a SuperMicro based build rather than HP and Dell. Try broadberry.co.uk for example, and make sure you get a quote, don't go by web prices. You'll save shed loads over the big brands, and to be hones they really don't offer anything for our sizes worthwhile over the a supermicro option. Look at an E5 based build, virtualise DC2 and split the file services, wds/wsus and web server into their own VMs. EDIT: Just as a comparison, made the same server on HPs configuration or broadberry's. Both with 128GB ram, 2 x E5-2620 cpu, dual PSU, 10GB networking. HP came in at £4600 and broadberry at £3200. And to think that's with any service/warranty removed on the HP part, and that doesn't include HPs extorionate HDD/SSD prices....of which you'd be stuck with, because you have to purchase their stupid drive caddies for them to work. (that's the main bit that drove me away from these big player server manufacturers) Obviously massively in excess of the spec you're looking at, but wanted to give you a clear example of why it's not worth buying HP/Dell. Lastly if you're concerned about support...just buy the on site/extended warranty! It's still cheaper than HP!
  4. That's a very good point. There's no one else there right now, but there is a spare desk that will likely be used at some point. Might take my keyboard down there at some point and try it out, as it's the head it's most likely to drive crazy
  5. Anyone recommend any of these that aren't stupid looking / gaming branded? I've got a DAS Keyboard pro 4 with cherry MX blues on my desk, it's the most professional looking one i could find, but i could do with something a little cheaper and no media keys. Want to replace the PA's keyboard with one because she liked mine so much (It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO nice to type on!)
  6. I wouldn't recommend them, had them the last 4 years, two swapped out 2 years ago, each one as bad as the next. Reliability wise they've been pretty shocking. They also have the highest per device license cost for papercut if i remember correctly. We're in the same process ourselves at the moment as our contracts expire on November, but definitely no chance i'd touch canon again. Who's the third party you're in contact with? (Don't touch a company called EBC whatever you do!) On another note: Epson have a 100ppm device that's coming out in the summer, it's RIPS based, so no warming up of a fuser, no heating required which = less to go wrong, and the ink bags last something like 100,000 prints. Probably worth a look at, it's just been shown off at BETT i think.
  7. With SCCM i can image an entire suite on a schedule without ever entering the room. SCCM is a beast, but it can be tamed, stick with it and you won't regret it in the end Also which version are you using? I had so many weird and not so wonderful bugs with 2012R2, current build on 1610 though seems fantastic, so many little niggley bugs i previously hit in 2012R2 no longer seem to be an issue. (besides multicast, hopefully one day microsoft might fix that...) What does your task sequence look like at the moment? Maybe we can help!
  8. Thanks, sounds like Schoolcomms is potentially a much better system...any negatives you or your colleagues have to say about it?
  9. In terms of the amount of time it takes to open school comms, select every parent and send it, how long does this take overall? Obviously excluding the amount of time it takes to actually write the email. The biggest issue we're seeing with InTouch isn't so much the sending, it's opening up InTouch and selecting the sheer quantity of people you want it to go to, which is easily 10 minutes or more. Does schoolcomms pull the data from sims and store it in their system to generate the information needed? rather than pulling direct from the database upon request which is presumably what InTouch does?
  10. Archive data that hasn't been used in a long time based on the last accessed date. Depends on the OS your file server is running but check this: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate if it's set to 0 then you'll have to set it to 1 and wait a few years if it's already set to 1, you're good to go. This will probably do what you want: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Search-Files-By-Last-65c87f8e
  11. First off, what alternatives are there to InTouch (but not parentmail)? As for the slowness issue, this is frustrating...i think due to the sheer quantity of people they're trying to send to, there isn't going to any simple solution here. They want to be able to send an email to every parent in sims in one go, this appears to be in the thousands, and when they click the box to select all linked adults it takes 10-15 minutes to respond. From a performance perspective i've watched the resource usage on the local PC, the sims server and on the SAN that the servers OS and Data disks run off, but there's not so much as a spike anywhere to be seen. Any suggestions? At the moment sending an email to everyone is done year by year, however that still takes 10 minutes to accomplish and means that some parents receive the same email twice or three times depending on how many kids they have in different years.
  12. Wow thread necro....safe to say my opinion changed over the course of 5 years....now running 10gb backbone and 10gb between servers and SAN. Still lacking the money to replace a lot of 100mb to desktop switches though unfortunately.
  13. Cheaper alternative to veeam to also consider with a very similar feature set: Arcserve UDP Data protection software | Arcserve Unified Data Protection Been using this for 2 years now. Works like a charm.
  14. Has it previously been setup with deduplication enabled?
  15. Had some done in the summer. This is the pricing I had: 140m OM3 8 core £720 EDIT: That was through existing ducting. Replacing old OM1. Can't remember if the cost of some ST or LC panels were included in that. Think i reused most of my old panels and they just put new connectors/tails in them. Also had one for 170m which was £865. So it does depend quite a bit on the distance you're running.
  16. There's never one helpdesk that does it all >_< I want and prefer the change control functionality in SDP. I prefer the overall look of spiceworks, not to mention the additional functionality like network monitoring. I want the booking system functionality in OPSD. (There's other things too that i've noted while looking through them all, but i can't remember waht they were...but each one had positives and negatives) I want all the best bits of all 3 in one product damnit!!!!....
  17. Realised the other day that i'd never sold any of my steam inventory items (including those over games like dota 2 etc) sold them all and made £52 in my steam wallet, ended up getting the steam controller and steam link seeing as there's no games i want Still got £7 left and 21 items still not sold on the market.
  18. This! Especially considering the MIS implications. If you're using something that's progressively updated, aren't you going to fall outside of sims supported versions each time a new big update comes out?
  19. Steelcase Leap every time! Not new of course...because you'd pay 10x what you want but here: https://www.2ndhnd.com/collections/steelcase a second hand steelcase leap v1. It's what i use at home, and it's wonderful.

    Gaming Chat

Last game i completed: Donkey Kong Country 3.....on the SNES. Rocking some old school gaming at the moment, gone through DK1, 2 and 3. Now I'm looking for something else to play, tempted by majoras mask on n64, or maybe something older.
  21. Programs such as Impero, and NetSupport (and presumably other network monitoring programs) can be configured to present an unavoidable (forcefully logs you off if you decline) full screen AUP on logon, and keeps a record of who, and when, the AUP was agreed by. That's the most foolproof option i've found over the years, but I'm sure there's more ways of achieving it too.
  22. Can salamander do what "ruler classroom" and "ruler parent" does? as per this information sheet: http://ruler.co.uk/docs/ruler_classroom_product_sheet.pdf and this one http://ruler.co.uk/docs/ruler_parent_product_sheet.pdf I know it can do what ruler connect does, as we're using it for all those features already. Interested in the possibility of showing a member of SLT (who loves office 365) what we could be using it for...
  23. Aerohive, only installed it this summer, so I'm still getting to grips with things at the moment. Prior to that we had a really half assed ancient Aruba setup.
  24. I've set mine to an hour now. I'll see how that goes and if i need to create more space i'll create a second scope and split the school into KS3 and KS4/5, hopefully that would be enough. We've only had a handful of sixth formers complain that they can't connect so far (2-3 at best) so it's not an urgent problem yet but one i definitely need to keep an eye on.
  25. Oh interesting, do you have any information on how to set that up?
