Its not long until half term and the year 11s are soon to fly the nest. You can sense this in the air almost, no need to check a calendar or even be aware of the date tensions are running high printers are set to turbo boost mode shooting out reams of paper by the second as final year students put together a years worth or work in a few days. Classrooms are no longer empty after normal school hours and none more so then the IT suites, requests for unblocking youtube and minecraft are at an all time high to the stage I'm considering a nice plaque just saying NO I WONT UNBLOCK THAT on the office door. Malicious activities have seen a decrease or I've just had less reported to me but some things never change yet again laptops are being left unplugged overnight possibly in feat they will break yet another plug socket when they forget to unplug them. All the above is routine but the amount of stupid niggly issues on my task list keeps building recently related to basic stuff certain applications having intermittent lockups, cables being removed when teachers aren't looking and even teaching a member of staff how to copy and paste! That's a lite hearted rant anyway for my first blog post but not my last, I do have one thing to add before I finish. Why do people not learn movie maker sucks and even with alternatives they don't want to use them. Its buggy it slow down, it has problems exporting perfectly good wma files at times and complete freezes are not uncommon! Some people never learn, us IT people however realise it wont be long until they are gone and the slightly quieter period begins while we plot the plans for the summer........budget permitting .

We currently use power DVD and windows media player used for playing audio and video, power dvd has no problems when playing back a DVD so my current solution is ask staff to use that. Staff accounts are set to lock after 10mins of idle, during the playback of a DVD on windows media player the screensaver kicks in after 10mins then the user is prompted for their password to resume, when they enter their password to resume playback media player completely locks up on them. Has anyone here experienced this problem? Oh just to add we have K-lite codec pack installed on them

Having never played a Diablo game I'm unsure if I should try this out, im a bit RTS fan and I played both starcraft and WOW. Is it worth picking up?

How long was this for?
-
Works great just tryed it as a local admin account and manually running it. I will add it to the computers shutdown scripts to clear at power off, printers are mapped at user logon so it should avoid any problems and clear that backlog of old printers and staff shouldn't see a longer logon or power on time

Having changed our print server recently we still have a number of printers 'on old servername' showing up to staff. Im trying to clear these off with a script but having issues. I have tried using con2prnt /f which only removes the current servers printers not the no longer existing ones and a script I found on here Option Explicit On Error Resume Next Dim objNetwork Dim objPrinters, ix Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network") Set objPrinters = objNetwork.EnumPrinterConnections ' ### Delete all currently installed network printers For ix= 0 to objPrinters.Count - 1 Step 2 Dim sPrinter, sUNCPath sPrinter = objPrinters.Item(ix) sUNCPath = objPrinters.Item(ix+1) If InStr(1, sPrinter, "SERVERNAME", 1) > 0 Then objNetwork.RemovePrinterConnection sPrinter, True, True ElseIf InStr(1, sUNCPath, "SERVERNAME", 1) > 0 Then objNetwork.RemovePrinterConnection sUNCPath, True, True End If If Err <> 0 Then Wscript.Echo "Error deleting printer: " & Err.Description Err.Clear End If Next Which shows the error when ran on clients and profiles and mandatory. All clients are windows XP btw. Im guessing they can't kill the connection to a none existent server?

Google Chrome and Apps in school
bondbill2k2 replied to bondbill2k2's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
The apps for education stuff sounds great just starting to read up on it. A few chrome apps which look pretty decent for edu use including wevideo, autodesk, lucidchart and autocad wds. Google drive integration sounds great mavhc but i'm not sure if the LEA would approve of the cloud storage for pupils work and the single point of failure left with the ISP. Chromebooks anyone? -
Hmm can I justify paying £15 to play a free mod... Not yet

Outside of work I always use google chrome, I also use it on my computer at work as it's my browser of preference and I'm not going to start the argument of IE vs Chrome. During a quiet period this afternoon I've began looking at the Chrome web store and the apps seem pretty good. Does anyone here use chrome apps in their schools for students? Most of them appear to integrate with google drive which I havn't really looked into either but I do see chrome being useful.

Saw this on the GiantBomb live stream a few days ago and it looks pretty different....in a good way!

I'm not much of a script writer at all, I currently have set /p userDir= Username: TAKEOWN /f "C:\Home Directories\%userDir%" /r /d y ICACLS "C:\Home Directories\%userDir%" /reset /T ICACLS "C:\Home Directories\%userDir%" /grant:r "SERVERNAME\%userDir%":(OI)(CI)M ICACLS "C:\Home Directories\%userDir%" /setowner "SERVERNAME\%userDir%" /T This works perfect for a single folder at a time, entering the username when prompted but I'd like to run this on a whole year of students, the idea is simple count the number of directories in the location specified. For each dir get the dir name and change the userdir parameter to this for each loop until all have been changed. I'm sure this wouldn't take long for someone who knows the syntax better then me I'll give it a go myself but might be beaten on here by other users, you beautifully brainy bunch!

On a NAS with tech only share access with serials and config details in text files. Physical discs are in a cupboard I organised last year but has once again returned to the "Are you sure its in here?" storage system. Wayyyyyyyy too much old software on the system, I made an attempt to clear it out on the image for our new computers lat year but each department returned their lists with pretty much everything ticked. Just remove their shortcuts and see if complaints begin

Ip address plan. How is your network setup?
bondbill2k2 replied to dany2010's topic in Wired Networks
Had a nightmare when starting here that we had 80 laptops with static IPs and around 70% of those were in the DHCP scope along with a server and a few printers, extended the static scope by around .50 now and add on that but we dont have much of a pattern other then DCs first few IPs, then printers and stuff added more recently just gets added onto the next free IP in that range. The most annoying was a staff member who is only in once or twice per week had a phone with no client ID that had been configured to the same static as a printer which confused us why it sometimes worked and other days didn't. Most of our IP lists were out of date too, is it good practice to add static IPs to the reserve list on youre DHCP? Would allow an easy way to find them -
What's with the obsession with touchscreens and voice entry?
bondbill2k2 replied to localzuk's topic in General Chat
Due to the increase in voice commands for everyday equipment such as the Xbox kinect in homes parents who find their hands full with their young children are using voice commands frequently. How long till we hear a childs first words as "xbox play" -
Most kids here know me by my first name as teachers often use it, I also had a 'mate' today followed by a 'yea that's sound' when I asked 'Is that ok?'

I renember reading somewhere the license is to that board so if you transfer the mobo (if thats not the faulty part) you can transfer the license? If you want to get into the topic of wasted licenses we have a few hundred of Vista the V that should not be named OS OEM licenses on machines running XP.......ok maybe not a waste then!

I totally love you, man...

Our new school build puts the techies' office in the server room
bondbill2k2 replied to beeswax's topic in General Chat
Our office here is also the server room, while the air-con is nice the noise is still annoying but you do get used to it over time much like the ticking of a clock -
I payed GW1 as my first MMO game and really enjoyed it, a few years later I played WOW but that only lasted about 4months before decided against it taking up too much time and the monthly fee were too much in the end. Looking forward to GW2 something different from shooting or racing on my xbox and I'm yet to find an RTS I really like in recent years beside RUSE

We currently share a single mandatory profile with all students and we have encountered problems with students saving some work in word 07, when saving they are told normal.dotx is in use, their work is then saved but the file is 0kb/empty. How do other people have their word options setup on shared mandatory profiles as I'm not sure ours is correct. We currently set words default template path to the app data/microsoft/templates folder of their mandatory profiles which they do not have write access to but my understanding is word should not save back to this and only use this template as the default. Its not always happening so I think there is a pattern to when it occurs, going on the files it has happened to it appears to be letters so possibly saving templates for letters? Details are still a little unclear from the IT Teacher but I'll try to get more.

We too use the Vision TechConnect and I'd recommend them too, not the cheapest but the amps are great neat units with their little remotes

Monday monday monday......not thinking completely straight today and I'm currently configuring our Netgear NVX NAS to have 4 shares tech resources, backups, staff resources and student resources. For obvious reasons I want to secure each area so using the AD integration would be ideal. I've set security mode to Domain with ADS domain type set and joined, in the DC specify section I have put the IP of our curric DC. We run two Vlans with two DC's one admin, one curric the NAS has two NICS one configured for each Vlan. The NAS is picking up security groups from the admin DC but doesn't appear to pick up any groups from the curric Dc. It does however pick up Curric AD Users but I cannot figure out why it will not pick up our curric AD groups have I missed something obvious?
