  1. Phew - managed to survive Halloween CLEARLY not frighten of witches But did have a load of Trick or Treaters on the doorstep, all dressed up as Gloria Gaynor! At first I was afraid. I was petrified.
  2. One for the mods to check out found on a cycling forum
  3. STarted The Peripheral a couple of days ago and really pleased with it Lots of things are unclear - but deliberately - looking forward to finding out about them
  4. Wife has told me the clocks have to go back really annoying as I only bought them last week and they seemed fine
  5. Now I have to remember which version of the Vulcan Nerve grip I need to sort out the oven clock in the morning! and at some point I will have to work out how to sneak a minute in the sister-in-law's kitchen alone and reset hers not thatthey ever notice - but I can;t sit with my back to their oven EVERY time
  6. Yup - did that a week or so ago - made no difference certainly used to work as I did a few Zoom/Teams meetings about a year ago Now I know what was causing it I can try some more specific things rather than concentrating on the video/screen stuff - but I have more important things on at the moment Wheeler Dealers won't watch itself you know!!! #retirementishard
  7. That sort of thing can backfire on you many years ago I was working on the weekend getting a program coded and was the only one in the whole floor of the building and bored I was coding the date validation section - as a professional programmer (well - I got paid for it) I had done that MANY times and I put in a line that said if the day was 29 and the month was 2 then print "Happy Leap Year Day" Normally my programmes had several little bits I did when bored - such as having a variable called Dracula - when all variables had to be things like WS17-index - or whatever I lived for when an inexperienced programmer asked me why it was called Dracula Clearly it was because it was a count sorry happened twice - would have happened more if the bar steward experienced programmers had not warned the new trainee anyway this one went wrong the program was supposed to be run late afternoon but one day things were running very late so the program ran at about 2 a.m. and it came up with an unexpected message and I was "on call" so I got a phone call at 2 a.m. asking about this unexpected message Took me several minutes to wake up enough to hear properly and remember that Satrday when I was bored AND work out what date it was to this day I am not sure they did not **** themselves laughing after the end of the phone call but it did rebound here endeth the story
  8. Just posting this in case it affects anyone else My home laptop is an HP G7 - work fine for what I need Except that for the last few months it has been hanging - normally after I have been playing some video - often full screen but happened even if not and sometimes hanged on the shutdown screen - which lead me to believe that it was a problem that happened - but the hang occurred a short time after suspicion enhanced as sometimes it happened just after finishing the video but always there was a video involved Anyway - tried updates and all that checked and updated all drivers Event log said power was cut off - which was just me pressing the off button for 6 seconds - naff all else in the log nothing helped but it was intermittent so difficult to tell if anything had heled Anyway I had a weird mouse problem on Mrs mikeprice's laptop so we swapped meeces which caused me to go into device manager on my laptop I noticed that the webcam was not listed checked for hidden devices and it appeared but as not functional tried updating the driver and all that eventualyy deleted the driver and device and now the hangs have stopped clearly I have no webcam but at least the hangs have stopped When I get time and it is too rainy to go out on my bike I will try to find out why the webcam is not working but if anyone else gets the same problem - try that!!!
  9. You do realise that when you die you will have to come back and haunt that specific house so you can be on hand when the 'joke' comes to fruition? reminds me of when I demolished one of the shed that were here when I moved in Under the floor - pushed as far back as possible - was a tin box it was quite heavy - about 1 foot by 9 inches and 3 inches high What was in it?? was it the proceeds of a bank job and filled with crisp - but out of date - twenties was it a cache of drugs was it TREASURE!!! nope - full of old engine oil I reckon a child of the previous owner changed the oil on a motorbike and couldn't be bothered to get rid of it properly so just hid it!! B****r
  10. Just watched the last episode and it was rather like an inverted Game of Thrones got better quite a lot seriously firmed up and came closer - but not exactly close - to the 'proper' events but then cramming several centuries into a couple of episodes would be a stretch but much better than I was expecting some bits that I was not expecting much better on a personal basis not sure 'Nori' should be called Elanor because the flower on Cerin Amroth (spelling???) are not known yet but then I named my daughter after those flowers - and Samwise's daughter - so I might be biased and $reasons still much improved
  11. WHAT?? with me posting in it?? (and with no mention of frogs)
  12. I haven't seen my brother since we left Australia. We were separated at Perth.
  13. I mentioned this last year but it may be relevant again Last year our flu jab was cancelled by the GP because they get allocated a number of doses and book appointments based on that number Well - actually that number plus a normal number of people saying no or not turning up but last year they basically had people saying yes every time and pretty much no refusals plus everyone booked in had turned up as a result they started running out of doses and had to order more which caused a delay From the posts it sounds like the same is happening again - I presume the surgeries and pharmacies have adjusted the numbers but maybe take up is even higher which is a good thing - especially with all the anti-vax carp they is around - shows it does not have a serious level of belief
  14. Should Mark Knopfler ever need an agent in the Middle East, check out Qatar George: he knows all the Kurds. also The Fiddle is the worst Pub ever! It's a vile Inn.
  15. Funny how these things can skip your mind!
  16. Part of the thrill of dunking is the peril of getting the timing sufficient to soak the biscuit but removing it before the structure becomes too soft to support the weight of the biscuit And I do not support the dunking of chocolate biscuits although I think that was due to watching a friend at University dunking Mars bars in out coffee breaks from labs and slowly sucking the chocolate off disgusting exhibition (the women in our group were always fascinated for some reason!!!) no wonder he ended up as the vicar at a public school!!!!
  17. Yes - I should admit that my comment was a bit over the top (WHat ME???) but tackling the whole of the second age was always going to be taking on too much and the plot has to be based on certain characters that flow through and it is a LONG time I suppose that I mostly dislike the total changing og some of the characters - including Mithril is you can call a metal a character! - and the show horning of hobbits into the story Numenor as a city is, as you say, appropriate in that it looks like Gondor in the films but there is no real concept there of the grandeur of the 'race' and their power - it seems a bit like a normal city witha high opinion of itself and some kind of past with the Elves Mind you I have not seen to the end of Sesaon one yet - I think I have 1 or 2 episodes to go so it might improve and Elrond just grates - seems wrong to me - which may be just me Mrs mikeprice has said she wants to watch it so that will be interesting as she has not read the Silmarillion and is very fussy about films and actors e.g. her coming to watch James Bond films with me comes under the category of "no greater love than this"!! so if she think it is weak without the background getting in the way then it will re-enforce my opinion we shall see
  18. Has anyone ever checked the calories in a hobnob v. the calories used in trying to get a tired grumpy baby back to sleep?? FRom what I remember from over 20 years ago - the calories in getting a baby to sleep is about the same as the total EU butter mountain!! (p.s. grandkids are doddle compared to mine!!!)
  19. hat makes a very god point that I had not thought about If s project takes several years to go from plan to completion then you need to review the spec at least avery year and make sure everyone knows that this is happening It may even reduce prices if you are lucky!!
  20. It is a problem if all the kit needs replacing at the same time which does mean that keeping the newer stuff from the old school has advantages assuming a policy of replacement on a schedule that the school management will stick to
  21. Just seen a post on another forum The poster had received a phone call from a bloke he knows from the pub bit of general chat - nothing unusual 'happened' to include, after a while, the 'fact' that this bloke had just won a lottery done by Bill and Melindar Gates although it could have been any organisation of celebrity and all he had to do was forward an email and the poster could enter the lottery as well - and almost certainly get counted in as it was all done my recommendation Clearly the 'bloke on the phone' was not the person he claimed to be but the poster is a well know person on the forum and doesn;t seem to be dumb so the scammer must have done it really well He had the sense to ask on teh forum if it might be a scammer before clicking on a link in the email when people asked him more question he remembered a question about a local football club that the scammer had ummed and ahhed about - which the real person would not have done but it was good enough to make him play along and go as far as looking at the email so I thought I would post this in case there is a new scam method around - which some people might fall for people on here will probably not - but IT people get asked about stuff so it is good to be aware
  22. I have watched the first few episodes If you just ignore that it is supposed to be something to do with Tolkien and work on the basis that it is based on what someone heard about the world that Tolkien created and told to his mate in the pub who was drunk but described what he could remember to the writers a few days later via a translator and the writers had watched the LOR films but were tired and dozed through some bits then watch it as something seperate based on a similar world but re-uses the same names of people and things and races and just enjoy it for that then it is OK far better than a lot of Fantasy series I have seen
  23. Actually I did used to have a thingy that changed all semi-colons to commas but the anti virus started to flag it as a key logger so I disabled it as is obvious
