  1. Hmm any details of these ones that are 'not allowed"?
  2. A few days ago I saw a money saving item on several websites Now normally I am very scheptical about these as they are often either overly simplistic/obvious (e.g. boiling less water uses less energy) Or sometimes are ignoring the basic manner in which devices operate - gnoring the fact that a thermostat operates being a common one However, this was something I hadn;t thought of and was uncertain of the effect of. The suggestion was that you should turn down the circulating temperature of the central heating system as most are set up far too high for the maximum efficiency of the boiler The suggestion included some figures - some thing like houses built in 1980-1990 - 60 degrees 1990-2000 55 degrees 2000-2010 50 degrees It also suggested that if you can drop it to 45 degrees that you should consider switching to a heat pump but if you can;t then a heat pump is not suitable without other changes Anyway - we looked (OK I looked) and the boiler was set to 72 degrees - so I dropped it to 60 degrees as suggested As a result the house actually seems to be warmer in the evenings In fact we have dropped the room thermostat down by 2 degrees I am presuming that the radiators are slightly cooler (OK 12 degrees or so) and so the room temperature climbs more slowly Hence the thermostat - which is at the far end of the room to the main radiator - sees a more constant temperature as the slightly cooler radiators down over heat the room before the thermostat can react Seems to be working anyway - just wondering if teh boiler is burning for longer - whether or not we a re actually saving gas AT the moment I am just assuming that we are!!
  3. Some people think that Argentina is quite a warm country which is untrue in fact it is bordering on Chile
  4. Surely that sign should end with an exclamation mark??? (yes - I know - me complaining about punctuation)
  5. In the local news today is a new 'work life balance' scheme by Liverpool Airport where thye are going to build housing for workers at the moment it is a Pilot scheme
  6. Hello all Interesting point has been brought on 'another forum' relating to Yellow box junctions and pedestrians The situation in question is this a driver approaches a yellow box junction with the intention of exiting at road A A that point the exit to road A is clear so they proceed across the box after the car (might be a van, bike, lorry - lets just say car as an example) enters the junction a pedestrian comes to the kerb clearly wanting to cross at road A we have to assume here that the intention of the pedestrian was not clear when the driver entered the box so the car reaches road A at this point the car in inside the box the highway code says you cannot stop inside the box except if you are turning right and waiting for a gap but the exit is clear (or was when you started) But the New Highway Code says that a car should wait for a pedestrian to cross when turning into a road which seems contradictory any ideas? I presume it comes into the same category as turning right and waiting for a gap - but that is made clear whereas this is not
  7. Dad Dad - what's for Breakfast???
  8. Started that yesterday - looks good so far!! did start watching "Mortal Instruments - City of Bones" on Prime Which is OK - nothing specila - probably in the 'Young Adults' category or something but it was OK for mindless "don;t think too hard" fantasy/magic anyway - something came up and I stopped about half way through Then -I came back to it teh next day and Prime had forgotten I had evner watched it and had now decided that I had to pay for it!!! annoyingly
  9. All kids are confusing - especially my grandkids!!!
  10. Played it for a few months then gave up was getting boring as the same tactic generally got the answer in 4-5 every time only failed once - even with my spelling!!!
  11. Mine does different things if I press the green button and hold it down for a few seconds At that point the display lights up and it shows the time - then pressing the button again cycles through several displays - some of which can only be accessed this way e.g. this is the only way I can get the export reading to find out how much it thinks we have exported to the grid from the solar panels other displays show the different modes - e.g. credit mode - or presumably debit mode to pre-payment might be worth a try to see what it says
  12. That took me far to long!
  13. Probably more a GranDad joke but.... On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" And God saw it was good. On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God, again saw it was good. On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed it was good. On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God, "You asked for it." So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you. There is no need to thank me for this valuable information. I'm doing it as a public service. If you are looking for me I will be on the front porch.
  14. Yup - had a good look a bit later not much to go on except the feet - but looked like a pidgeon - or ex-pidgeon There are quite a few round here anyway We were thinking that there might be something like that around as thre have been far fewer birds in the garden this year
  15. Major drama in the back garden this morning about 10a.m. I looked out and noticed a circle of feathers on the lawn just as I was turning away I saw something under the holly bush it took some looking at but I eventually realised it was a bird then it moved a bit and I realised it was a hawk of some kind I dashed around and found a decent camera and took a few shots but I needn;t have worried because it was there eating for over an hour gory thing was that it was initially tearing at the prey and tossing stuff away - presumably feathers but then started tearing and eating but occaisionally I could see other movements - I think the poor victim was still alive and I could see its head moving until the hawk shifted a foot and pinned it down differently - but even then I could see some movement at the back for a while nature is not fluffy and kind and gentle!!!
  16. So - a pint and steak and chip it is then
  17. Just seen this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63483668 Seems like a good idea - but my first thought was that 'some people' could fiddle it my switching everything off and going to the pub for dinner and to watch 'the match' (other TV programmes are available) not sure how they will work out whether or not you have switched energy usage - what if you wait until the test hour is over then stick the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer on just after. sounds eminently fiddleable or is that just be being cynical about how people will behave?? again
  18. NOW you tell me!
