I think it's generally a bad idea to allow apache and php to auto_update themselves as occasionally you get a bad build or a build that breaks which would bring you entire site down, your better off scheduling a maintenance period and doing a manual upgrade. I would always recommend that for production sites people get the original apache binary and install php, et all manually. I would have thought it wouldn't be too hard to update php you might get away with just copying the new php files over the old ones, try it on a test machine first.....

Burgemaster: What are you using title checking to block? I think closing a window with a specific title is quite easy to do in VB script but a better solution is probably to stop these windows being opened in the first place through use of group policy... Cheers Jona

Might be worth noting that if your using xhtml a marquee tag will invalidate you page as it's not a supported tag (The marquee Element - scrolling marquee). Javascript with css might be a better way to do this.

I suggest cat - native in unix or Native Win32 ports of some GNU utilities You should be able to do it with redirect in batch, but I'm not 100% sure of the syntax. Cheers Jona

Just to post a follow up on this Camtasia seemed to do exactly what I wanted. It will accept a picture in picture video feed next on a powerpoint show (I had to run through the show timings manually but in future could record it live). It also exports to a web based flash player. Separating the video based on markers seemed to produce better performance (although I'm not sure how it effects buffering). Cheers guys Jona

If it has an external power adapter then yes it needs testing (although I suspect it's just a visual inspection). If it is USB powered then it's slightly more questionable....

This sounds like correct practice to me. The logic being if you can unplug something then it needs testing. A properly tested desktop unit should have at least 4 tests - 1 x monitor lead 1 x main lead 1 x monitor 1 x machine If the monitor has a power adapter this should also be tested. I would think low voltage peripherals (e.g. USB only no external power) shouldn't be tested, also fixed wiring shouldn't be PAT tested as it comes under different legislation. Cheers Jona

Well starting with how do you suggest people practically do this, ending with the fact that a pay rise is on the cards it's just UNISON are disputing how much it should be this is stupid suggestion! I also dislike the term scab. Surely it's every members right to make up his or her own minds whether they wish to participate in industrial action it's not like your paid by the hour miners, your job will still be there when you come in the day after the strike they aren't taking your job they just doing their own. Again I feel I must call for sources for your figures I'm not convinced you can do a direct comparison of private vs. public as private wage increases are much less likely to fuel a large increase in inflation. Whilst I understand a union exists to look after the interests of it's members I think they need to take into account the current economic climate . Otherwise things will be worse for everyone.

Hmm.... Now inflation may well rise without a pay rise due to external factors (e.g. the economy is slowing down). However if the big unions force pay rises that's bound to increase tax / inflation which will be bad for everyone. There is no point having this "extra" money if in doing so you force up inflation. It certainly is a problem and I don't see a quick fix I just think the unions need to have a wider view of the countries economic conditions. Cheers Jona

Whilst I do agree that ""English"" money shouldn't pay for Scottish executive projects this is a very simplistic view of looking at things. I think your figures are complete rubbish tbh see http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2003/04/17042/21542 One very good reason not to "Cut the Scottish off" is the fact that the majority of north sea oil comes ashore in Scotland. Another major issue is that removing Scottish seats would completely change the balance of power in parliament so this would have to be addressed which I'm pretty sure would cost money. IMO the UK is much stronger united than in it's constituent parts.

As the title says, completely off topic but my girlfriend is looking for a year or two's secretarial/admin work in the west midlands (preferably Wolverhampton). She's about to get a 2:1 BSc in geography (results confirmed next week), she has no direct admin experience but is the most organised people I know! Hi all, I'm looking for software we can use to create a video of a guest lecture we had. We ideally want to show the power point slides (or the speaker) as a picture in picture type thing. We could use producer to do this but that rather limits the viewing potential, we'd like something that can output as flash so we can use a web-based player..... Any suggestions ideas? I'm sure this is possible will full on video editing software but I'd ideally like to not have to go that extreme (perhaps I have no choice?) Cheers Jona

This isn't really how a wiki works! You might be better off with a script that displays the images in a folder (sure there are loads around or pretty easy to do in any number of scripting languages). Then just give the students access to the folder? Cheers Jona
