An interesting idea, I like the concept. Although there are already a couple distributions aimed at schools / education there's no point just doing stuff people have already done. Presumably your talking about building on top of an existing linux distribution rather than building anything from scratch Welcome to Linux From Scratch! in which case choosing the distribution will be key. Its pretty easy to get a working install of edubuntu/ubuntu with a lamp stack installed so it would have to be something more than this. Perhaphs rather than a complete distribution we should look at creating a package that has things pre-configured...... Just my thoughts. Jona

By going to the Toshiba support site linked in the above post and filling in the file download form, the file I found was listed under storage management.

Long answer: There are lots of data protection and privacy issues here especially if your not the network manger. At minimum I would have thought you'd need the backing of your network manager and SLT before you do this as well as an appropriate AUP. A simpler solution might be to walk around the classroom and look over the student's shoulders!

This isn't entirely true, there are certainly a lot of quirks and things that are harder to do on a RM network than a vanilla one so this could defiantly be viewed as an annoyance. A lot of RM networks also seem to rely on RM support to do certain tasks who aren't the fastest so that could be quite an annoyance as well.

Half-life has a BBFC rating of 15, are the students who are going to play this 15? I know these ratings are voluntary, etc but is this really good practice....... Several of the quake titles have ratings as well.

I think your going to have trouble finding a fanless / quiet 48 porter, since most with that many ports are big enterprise level switches. As above maybe consider 2 x 24s with fibre link or similar. Just make sure they are in a reasonable ventilated cab....

It would be very bad website practice to store a password in a cookie. I will probably only be storing a session ID, even if it was to store a password it would probably be md5'ed (or similar) which is impossible to decrypt except comparing like strings. I think you need to find one of these cookies and do more in-depth analysis. Ethereal can't decrypt passwords but if setup right it would be able to sniff them going over the network in some circumstances, although possible not if it's an SSL connection as that would basically be a man-in-the-middle attack

As mentioned above the problem with this is that it can induce static.

In my experience of these mini vacuum things they are useful for cleaning generic case dust, but don't have the pressure to clean fans, filters, etc.

if the service is starting correctly it sounds like a port / firewall / configuration issue. If not check your Application event log for a more useful error message. Try binding to port 81 or 8080 as above and disabling any proxies and/or adding localhost to your list of exceptions. Cheers Jona
