I *think* the username and password only matter if you want to use the cache administration console wigget so just set them to what ever I think. I assume it is installed by default but I'm not sure because I use a WAMP stack built from scratch.

Yeh me too ZH but Xcache dosn't get installed with xampp but the looks of it eAcclerator and APC do.

But this shouldn't have that much affect. I'm still slightly at a loose to know why your install is so slow are you sure it's php? Does the php load fast locally? Jona

Maybe install some caching - both APC and eaccelerator have commented sections in your config so might already be installed, worth having a read up and turning one of them on. You could turn off some of your php extentions if your not using them. Apart from that nothing that should especially affect performance. You could turn on gzip compression in apache for your images, etc. Cheers Jona

Hi, Yeh it was me. We back up our mysql server (moodle) nightly and don't stop it, if fact if you do stop it as in kill the service you can't connect at all (fairly obviously) so I don't think you need to do this. The command is as follows: mysqldump -u mysqlUsername --password=mysqlPassword databaseName > c:\locationYouWantToSave\TheDatabase.sql If your path environment isn't set up correctly you may need to search for mysqldump on your hard disk and run it from there. Looking good, 2 minor criticisms: Restore and import are next to each other and have the same icon which looks a bit weird/confusing. I also don't like the heads facing each other for the forum. We use a speech bubble type icon for ours, can send over if you like? Cheers Jona

maybe dialup? I guess it depends what e-mail is worth to your head but I think you might have trouble justifying £180 a year on school funds especially if it's only going to be used part of the time.

Whilst £15 is good it works out to £180 a year, that seems a lot just so the head can check their e-mail......

I think the best of the packages as sysman says is xampp but I would strongly recommend for a production site that you install mysql, apache and php from scratch yourself.

It's a very bizzare type of slow loading because it takes ages thinking then all of a sudden loads. Have you checked you haven't got a DNS/firewall issue or something of that nature? I don't know of any packages that do this but I should imagine if you've got a low voltage switch in place (or a relay/transformer). It would be relatively easy to do with the serial port or a microcontroller. (PICAXE) Jona

Your going to have to modify the code I think, unless you can do this will mymoodle and blocks. Some of the modifications here: http://moodle.coleggwent.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=58&topic=7 should point you in the right direction. I think the first thing you need to do is stop this happening, take the server offline if you have to..... Then you need to look at your security and tighten it up so you have to be authenticed and/or from an internal address to send messages. If your sure your not running an open relay someone may have a user password? It may be your server it's self or an internal client has been compromised, don't under estimate the potential seriousness of this. Cheers Jona

Well usually you need to move the jumper to another position rather than remove it all together to reset the bios.

cmos = bios for PC maintenance purposes. When you took the battery out did you also disconnect the mains power? If you did you probably need to look for a reset jumper on the motherboard (a manual will help with this!) Jona
