I would make sure that sonicwall filtering will work for you before moving. Ours doesn't work very well, we're currently looking at alternative products. Jona

Smoothwall / Lightspeed AD Auth Process
Jona replied to Driftingashore's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Does anyone have an estimated release date for this feature in smoothwall? We're currently evaluating whether lightspeed or smoothwall would provide the best user experience for our users and integration with our existing 802.1x would be a killer feature. -
HP LaserJet P2055DN's going offline and not responding
Jona replied to flyinghaggis's topic in Hardware
Hi all, Sorry to resurrect this epic thread, we have the same problem with lots (~6) of our 2055s randomly dropping off the network about once a day and refusing to respond in any way (ping, snmp, web) until they are rebooted. Have applied the latest firmware using the update utility, does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks Jona -
Have you looked at iSAMS? We're an independent and extra various bits of data from the MIS for use in several other systems.

Very interesting topic as we're also currently looking at these same two options. We currently have a sonicwall which is pretty useless for web filtering in terms of policy definition, reporting and support, although we may keep it as a firewall.

Eclipse.net Active Directory (AD) and phone app
Jona replied to Jona's topic in Educational Software
Hi all, So I now have the app working. However when I try and login with a AD user I get the error "The operation couldn't be completed SLDataLoaderErrorDOmain error -1000.". No part of our domain name is in the login just a simple username. If anyone has got the iMLS App authenticating against Active directory I'd be really greatful for any pointers....- 22 replies

Eclipse.net Active Directory (AD) and phone app
Jona replied to Jona's topic in Educational Software
For reference the KB article 2022 and accompanying PDF seem to be the best reference from MLS that this might be possible.... The main key thing that seems to be missing from that is that the front page of your eclipse.net install needs to load the front page (and/or http://libraryserver.schooladdress.com/services/library.svc) without any authentication requirement. I can make that work currently the only problem then seemed to be with the combination of MLS and IIS auth settings I tested. If you logged in using the on-page form it wouldn't show you as logged in until you manually refreshed the page. The AJAX style login "ticker" just continued to spin forever.- 22 replies

Eclipse.net Active Directory (AD) and phone app
Jona replied to Jona's topic in Educational Software
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated! You seem to have had a better experience of MLS support than I've had thus far, perhaps I just got them on a bad day...... Domain name should be fine as we use the same domain name internally and externally with split horizon DNS, it is currently library.schoolname.com internally so with just an additional A record in the external zone that should be fine. You reckon it needs a full public interface and not just port forwarding of 80 and 443? Assume from your comments that SSL isn't going to be possible? Could either of you share what Authentication modes you are using in both IIS (Site -> Security) and Eclipse (Configuration -> Authentication)? Thanks Jona- 22 replies

Hi all, We host our own instance of eclipse.net internally and use active directory so that users don't need their own login. We're trying to deploy a link to their iphone, etc app but according to Microlib knowledgebase the app doesn't support AD username and passwords if using the app because the password is too "encrypted". Is that true? I'm really struggling to get useful advice from their support department, they keep trying to up-sell us to their hosted package. Any help much appreciated.... Thanks Jona

Sonicwall NSA240 Content Filtering
Jona replied to bodminman's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We use Sonicwall content filtering and it's a nightmare..... Specific issues are: The single sign on agent crashes at least once a week. It is hard to filter sub-folders of domain without filtering the actual domain. Some methods of white listing don't work and your lists will be randomly lost if you mis-click. The category filtering uses backward logic, e.g. you tick what they shouldn't get access to not what they should. On the plus side we do use the application rules and that does work quite well to block app signatures e.g. Skype, etc. -
What's wrong with my ProCurve 5308xl (or its config)?
Jona replied to AngryTechnician's topic in Wired Networks
@Theblacksheep I'm pretty sure auto-mdix won't deal with a loopback properly, it's usually used to support straight vs. crossover cables see: Medium Dependent Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It may mitigate to some extent against the scenario where a student plugs two network points together if the two network points are in the same switch. I can't see anyway it can mitigate against an actual switching loop, where you accidentally connect a loop of switches which in a complex network is surprisingly easy to do! -
What's wrong with my ProCurve 5308xl (or its config)?
Jona replied to AngryTechnician's topic in Wired Networks
If your losing connectivity for between 60 and 30 seconds it's often because Spanning Tree is setting a port to the blocked state as it's detecting a loop somewhere. Depending on how your vlan ports, trunks, etc are set-up this appear to be layer 3 issues when it's actually a layer 2. When a machine is in a failure state can it ping it's gateway ip on the switch? Can other places? Have you checked your switch logs? Usually command: show log on a procurve. -
Hi all, We're looking for someone to develop / design a theme for our blackboard VLE, anyone got any recommendations for a company or freelancer who could do this? Thanks Jona

Hi all, Know there have been a couple of this type of requests recently but not one for the south east as far as I can see. We're based near Guildford and looking for options on cabling contractors to run and terminate some CAT5e. It's for a wireless deployment in boarding houes so will be lots of long runs as opposed to high density classroom termination. We have a wide range of buildings ages from just a few years old to several hundred years old and naturally all the overhead in terms of Risk Assessment, Liability Insurance that goes with school work. Any recommendations?? Thanks Jona

If you have a particular suspect ip address and access to a linux command line I like to use: arping -b ipaddress If you get replies from two different mac addresses then you have a conflict.

Hi Edugeek, We're looking a number of wifi solution to provide wifi coverage to the approximatly 600 students in our boarding houses. Obviously coverage is a key issue for us as the boarding houses are much more like hotels in construction than classrooms e.g. lots of little rooms spread over several floors. At least one boarding house is a classic old building with big thick walls. We have a network access controller (Bradford campus manger) which we need to work with the wireless. The front runners currently seem to be Meru and Xirrus, would be especially interested to hear any feedback good or bad about these solutions, especially if your using a Campus Manager. Thanks Jona

Local Web Server Brain-scratcher
Jona replied to basicchannel's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
On a redhat based box the relevant log file would probably be /var/log/http/error_log not sure if Ubuntu is the same. Might be worth restarting apache/httpd it could be that it's out of memory / some other resource. -
Anyone able to give ballpark pricing? I'm guessing £lol?

Hi all, We're having problems making our sonicwall "E class" firewall and web filtering work with OS X. We currently have the single sign on agent installed on a windows DC. We're using WMI to determine the user who is logged in on windows desktops but obviously this doesn't work with OS X or macs. We have a "magic triangle" of Windows DC -> Mac Server -> Mac Desktop There are other SSO options such as event logs, but we've found them to be unreliable. Would be interested to hear of anyone who has a sonicwall proxy solution working with OS x. Any help / advice much appreciated. Thanks Jona

In IPv6 Notation: “The use of “::” indicates one or more zeros.” so the address expands to: 2011:5555:5555:1:0:0:0:5 So just fill the address with zeros until you reach the correct number of bits.

Clickview Library Server & Manager latest release
Jona replied to mole's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Have spoken to Joe @ Clickview, the crash was caused by the .net installer not agreeing with being run from a network share, I *think* this only effects the Library server installer. -
Yeh thats what we were seeing, although I assumed it was because our BBC1 signal strength had dropped to 40%.
