the performance jump actually really felt or is this from a benchmark point of view? does anyone use any of the 3rd party UI changers for the start menu or just solider on with the metro interface. tempted to give it a go at home on my daily pc which doesnt do much more than email and web stuff

+1 on the micro server i keep looking out for a cheap one to populate for home stuff as well as the buffalo linkstation i have is pretty poop. also have dual core atom boards, and i think MSI or gigabyte do a onboard 1.6ghz celeron which would give you a little more poke that the atom one of these... GIGABYTE - Motherboard - CPU Onboard - GA-C807N (rev. 1.0) they do a couple of different verison. might be limited on SATA ports mind which is a shame....

doing some testing with the kyocera app and looks good, seems to support the newer printers better

i wouldnt assume a default as alot of things in 2008R2 if its not specified it assumes deny. id remove inherited on the year group folder (which you have created) add the pupil group and then test the last set of permissions.

with apple TV's found it easier to activate them at home.......... (i didnt thank god)

its a shame to loose all of the easily accessible logging for users application and the other application limitation that can be easily applied from the one interface

we are also testing this, we have found that using the "ranger groups" does redirect the selected items but does change the permissions of the home directories of the user depending on the additional options you set for security in ranger admin (this is iffy ) we had to reset a load after testing a couple of account permissions, it does appear to emulate some of the native policy options for folder redirection permissions and id suggest that its granting exclusive rights for the user. ---- slight thread drift i wouldnt say its broken product as such but windows 7 and XP are completely different animals

id still suggest doing a little test as you might not need to manually re-add anything.

as you havent got inherited permissions running through your folder tree you will need to add them to each folder is an option (long and painful) are you manually creating this home directory folders? if you check the inherit permissions box the permissions you have defined already "shouldnt" be changed id create a dummy folder structure and see how it behaves and if you does what you need it to do.

if your benchmarking it then you would see an increase, in day to day running (depending on what your actually doing) maybe less so. and to be fair alot of the lower speeds can be tweaked to run slightly faster if you required it.

+1 for APC even an older smart ups 700 will do the job without fuss (depending on how long you want the pcs to remain running for in the event of an outage) just because you have a 750W psu doesnt mean it will draw that all the time, the small power meters give you an accurate measurement of load at the socket which is what i would work from.

are the folders underneath the top level home drives folder set to inherit from parent? forcing the permissions to replicated to that folder and child objects is under the advance tab in security. still getting used to the slightly different UI layout for 2k8r2 so this might be slightly incorrect...

printer should be able to last 3-5 years imo so if its split over that it worth it

duplex all the way saves on paper, not everyone will make use of it (if you force it to duplex i bet people will moan) all about choice

the pooling of the drivers is good which means you only need to change one part, not ideal for testing mind

well if the KX driver isnt working and the PCL works for you id go for that. there does appear to be issues with the KX drivers on 2008r2, i was using an older KX driver which i then updated at the time which didnt resolve the issue. depending on how you roll out your drivers you should be able to install the working driver on the server and then install the KX one on the client, we are however using local port printing which can be less flexible in your ability to roll out and manage it. (only an issue if you need to change something which we dont do often)

just installed version 2.41 (digitally signed) of the classic plugin unversal driver which they list ask KPDL/PCL and that has the option for double sided. should be under the layout page under preferences, by default its set to none.

which drivers are you using as i had a similar problem when using the KX drivers (on 2008R2) switching to the Uni drivers/KPDL sorted the spooling time issues.

has a kind soul installed Windows using a KMS key, as i have found this then causes that machine to publish to DNS as a host

i wouldnt disable it

interesting a proper removal tool. in a slightly related issue - which i think there is a thread about elsewhere had a response back from smart about the annoying popup box when loading notebook for proxy auth and it is a "known" issue and they are working on it....
