a spare is good over the years i have preferred WD over others. the face that alot of OEM's use them must be a sign that they are either reliable enough or they are getting them at a cheap enough price

alot of distro's dont ship with the require codecs etc for common formats its to do with licensing. adding some 3rd party repo's and you will be able to play the files. (like this RPM Fusion - RPM Fusion)

XFCE is your friend, i cant stand alot of the flashy modern linux GUI's

wiped my win 7 pc (4GB low power athlon) and installed fedora 18 XFCE on it quite please so far some teething issue due to the fact i havent used nix for donkeys and not for any length of time. current issue is getting mapped network shares to survive a reboot, need to add some entries to fstab i gather

xubuntu works well i have used it on old P4's

for me i wouldnt put SATA drives in a "front line" server not only because of the seek times etc but also alot of SATA drives arent rated as high in terms of the MTBF. but as others have said your not dealing with a large amount of clients having support for SAS later if your budget wont accommodate it the drives now is something worth checking

i think the companies who are saying the spec is "too" low are just trying to get you to spend more money... you might find you need to trim back the spec a little but still buy a system which allows expansion later (say in another year or so) that way you can add extras as more cash becomes available. Or the other option is to say "this" is the cost of achieving your requirements. just dug out the spec of the server i put in a primary and its: HP DL360 G7 1x E5620 Quad (dual capable) 6GB RAM 3x 300GB SAS 10K Disks (600GB total size) Server 2k8r2 license this came in at £1800.00 and this was at the end of 2011 so i dont think your budget it that unreasonable

has the network config been changed as in the later versions of centos for example you have to manually set the LAN to come up on boot.

indeed better to have plenty of space, id also would have like to have a "hot spare" even if it wasnt plugged it for the "just in case" moment of a disk dying and there is an issue getting a part or the warranty has expired. this is something i am starting to do as getting hold of older disks is a pain

put a new server in a small primary last year. used a single socket Xeon HP DL360 with 8GB RAM and R5 (around 300GB in size) not virtual but for what the school needed its ideal (25 desktops some laptops) been bomb proof so far and was very impressed with the pricing and the software tools for the HP kit they only have around 150GB of data currently and thats going back over (in some cases) 6-7 years of old resources and such like so your storage spec has ALOT of room for growth

are you using the deployment tool which Adobe provide for building a serialized package?

the older style mita series (FS1800 -1920) are imo better made and require less looking after as the major parts (fuser etc) appear more durable than the newer FS2000-FS3920 which is a shame as overall i like them. price for price they are faster and offer better features than other makes but the dip in quality of the product overall has had us considering perhaps HP (the pricing makes my eyes water....)

worked with some cisco points a few years ago and these could be configured stand alone via their web interface i believe that there are some tools on cisco's site to aid in setup and config, which might be useful if you are intergrating them with a cisco switch which manages the points. at a base level in theory an access point should be able to plug into any switch and be used by clients the small box on top of the power bar im assuming is a power over ethernet injector? if your unsure of what the kit in the cab is doing it is going to make the job harder
