i have found that the upgrade is iffy and doing a fresh install has better results. its a horrid piece of software....

for pro you need to populate the unattend with the client KMS key which MS publish on there site or it prompts for it as part of the install

are they still tied to Smoothwall then as it was a spin off project?

i have noticed it can be a bit laggy, have you had any response on the smoothwall express forum. there was rumblings that development had stopped?

you cant easily stream SP1 into an installation, id just get a ISO with it already done, then roll out your reference image update it and capture it and the updates are retained along with the software you install (if you install any)

i would have MDT on a separate box. now i have set one up i could set another one up in a short space of time, its just getting your head round the tools which you need to edit certain things and the differing methods of building an image. The MS documentation is LARGE and heavy going at times as alot of the material covered you might not need. there are some MDT videos which i pulled from MS's site but i havent got the link handy, but they have hosted which should give you a good idea of what its all about

when i say manuallu i meant loggin in on the pc with a user which has admin rights on the pc, the upgrade is triggered and runs without a problem. i have looked at the simsperm.bat but have not used it yet. in previous upgrades we havent need to apply any additional permissions as it just worked. nothing on the network/clients has changed. the shortcut we use for sims points to pulsar.exe on the local machine

some servers are fussy over the ram you put in. as a rule of thumb i wouldnt mix and match makes/models/speed if you need to upgrade it i would buy a whole new batch of RAM also you may need to look at the manual on how HP want the ram slots to be populated as there is likely a specific ordering to it if it isnt going to be fully populated.

ran it last night and had to manually run all the client upgrades as it wasnt triggered in the usual way. LEA has said its permissions which are the problem even though nothing has changed on our system since the last release. ideas or suggestions? as i dont want to have to manually do it on 40+ workstations again lol

the account your connecting to still a member of the WSUS admin group? (assuming you are trying to connect remotely using the WSUS console from another pc)

a rather old 2 socket system here with 4GB RAM, nothing special about it at all. (1200 pupils 100 staff) running am&pm and lesson registrations quite happily (also has an installation of discover for testing) looking at upgrading to a new box shortly due to the removal of 2003 server support and the moving to 2008 (captia appear to support R2 but the LEA doesnt) something with 8GB ram plus should be ample really 30GB is mental unless thats keeping nearly all the DB actions in ram?? i cant see a reason for it being that high its not like your going to have 100 and 100's of massive queries or what every running on it constantly?

doesnt there need to be a 1 to 1 pairing with the vlans and ESS Profiles. had it running recently here seems to work well. (its a home based product so be interesting to see how it fairs in the long run, not being able to make use of the full screen size of the projector is an interesting feature.....)

isnt there an option to as you approve updates that dependencies are installed as well (i mean linux has been able to do this for ages when installing packages)

might be worth clearing the "software distribution" folder from the client and then forcing it to reauth with the WSUS box

we had problems post upgrade to G3, the main bug bear is the UI which is better than G2 but some items just dont flow or make sense. the "only use chrome" browser message for best performance i think is a backward step it should work well in all browsers some of the clever items on the UI are still rather laggy which can be frustrating (adding/viewing block lists etc) an example the lookup functions for the block lists turns a simple task into a lag fest of waiting for it to populate Documentation is/was referring to the older versions which makes navigating the new UI more difficult, but this seems to have been glossed over to some extent. its a powerful product but with shortcomings which make it lack lustre to use. needs more polish for a premium product

ive used virtual box at home, i think we have a running VMware server which can do the snapshotting which a co worker has just reminded me about so will most likely import the image into there.

been prepping a building using VMplayer and it appears to be behaving better (shame no support for snapshot, just manual copy the files instead) Still wanting to use the MS tools for deploying at this stage (still swearing at it slightly but progress being made)

i have an aging thompson router for my BE internet connection which is cooking and needs rebooting often, having stumbled across DD-WRT in various forum threads i thought id give it a go... sourcing a supported router (Dlink DIR615) i flashed DD-WRT to the device connected it up and left it set to automatic for connecting to the ISP and nothing (the suggested settings from the ISP dont appear i cant seem to set, VPI and VCI as they suggest) my question is have i misunderstood what DD-WRT does, i thought it could use it to replace my aging router, but having visited the BE support forum i was flammed for thinking this as the DD-WRT setup still needs a modem/bridged router to connect. which to me is barking mad. your thoughts

do you really need a SAN? 10K isnt a huge amount of money if you are going down that route. for servers its worth looking at system builders who use Intel servers as these are solid and tend to be cheaper than options from Dell and HP tho they are a bit more barebones in terms of management and you are relying on the support from the company who supplied them

right ok, just using a pc i had around as the idea is that it shouldnt matter what its installed on as drivers and the like are removed as the image is captured. but will look at that as well. As my base image is taken from MDT customised and recaptured

i thought i had a good handle on how it works (i created a reference image/customised it/captured it/deployed to a pc creating the default profile/drivers installing ok) but then just started locking me out going to check my .xml files to see if something is odd and add in the skip activation timers etc, the test pc had been contacting the KMS host we have ok.
