wow I didn't even know they had a menu in CLI, thanks! Weird, its showing in the table the tagging is correct but when you do show vlan port 39 it says its untagged on a different VLAN I don't want? Apparently its because I need to remove 802.1x from that port?

Hi Guys, I'm trying to assign multiple VLAN's to a single port on a HP Procurve 2510 switch, however the GUI is useless and although I make changes they wont apply. Does anyone know the commands to tag / untagg multiple vlan's in putty to one port? I seem to be able to do it with a single VLAN but not more than one. Many thanks

many thanks for this! There's no ultraVNC folder for TightVNC so it doesn't work, cant find an uninstaller for TightVNC otherwise I would have just changed the path

Hi guys, Not a big issue but something a few people have asked. When printing to a printer (all installed on our print server) it always says Total Pages: 1 dispite printing a larger amount. Any ideas if this can be fixed or is the only way to disable the notifications?

so do you deploy the msi through a script with the custom command lines inserted or are you going to each machine and running the command lines manually to install?

Hi guys, Anyone use TightVNC atall? We have successfully deployed it across the network, including the registry keys but for some reason, the password doesn't allow anyone into the admin panel. We have to go to each machine, reinstall it and manually set a new password. On the website it says copy these registry keys across to other machines, however those registry hives don't exist (not on windows 7 anyway) http://www.tightvnc.com/winst.php Taken from the TightVNC website: If you want to install TightVNC on a number of computers, and do not want to repeatedly enter the same password on each machine, install TightVNC once and set the password, then copy the registry settings to other computers. TightVNC settings can be found in the following sections in the registry: •HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3 •HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL\WinVNC3 On our machines We have no 'ORL' hive but we do have a 'TightVNC' hive. Tried deploying the registry values in that and no luck. Should the registry keys be allocated as a machine GPO or user? Any ideas? Cheers

Yeah of course, what i'm getting at is once its setup, its very easy to maintain. There isn't a great deal of information about clients in the Enterprise Console but i'm sure that will be improved with future releases. We had an RM CC3 network before with Symantec EndPoint Protection which was awful compared. RM used to insist on a full virus scan everyday which slowed our machines at the time down to a grinding halt! Im sooooooo glad we aren't with RM anymore!

£500 per AP is bang on what we thought it would be. I just hope the quote that comes back is affordable. We wont be doing anything really fancy, just a couple of SSID's, Bonjour Services for Ipad to use with Airplay Server and attach VLAN's to different SSID's.

We use Sophos endpoint protection anti virus and Sophos pure message do spam filtering. Both fantastic products, I hardly have to touch the server, just check for alerts every so often but it emails them to you if there are any! We got the whole Sophos package which I think lasts several years befor it needs to be renewed. Would highly recommend it

The only thing with LAN3 is they seem to have a big backlog of jobs so not sure how long turn around will be. Anyone recommend Ruckus? I'm receiving plenty of PM's from various people offering Ruckus as a solution but not seen it before. I'm guessing it needs a controller though.

Thanks guys, LAN3 is who we have been dealing with too. Not the same chap though. We are now just waiting for a demo kit to arrive so that we can have a play and see what we think! The webinar we had made the product seem very easy to use, however the LAN3 network engineer who came down dived straight into some really advanced stuff it can do and confused me a little haha From what I understand of it, plug it into a gigabit port on a POe switch, assign profiles and VLANs and away you go....we shall see! We have a fibre backbone between cabs with 10/100 switches so might have to look at installing new switches too if we go with it :/

Hi Guys, We have a meeting with AeroHive this afternoon to look at their wireless products, which seem almost too good to be true! About 4 years ago we invested in Aruba and need to keep that solution going but add to it. AeroHive seems to fit the bill perfectly. No controller and you can AD-Hoc the AP's as you need them. Simply plug into a POE switch and with minimal configuration, away you go! This is what we are lead to believe anyway... Anyone using AeroHive? If so what do you think about it? Anything to look out for? I believe their AP's also host airplay services which is extremely handy as our school are buying more and more ipads this year, anyone comment on if this feature works well?

Script seems to have worked on my machine to allocate a printer, thank-you! Hopefully it will resolve the issue with machines missing the printers too!

Hi guys, We have a print server with all our printers installed. For each IT room we have allocated a printer via GPO. We did this by creating a blank GPO on the DC, right clicking the printer on the print server, deploy with Group Policy, browse for the blank GPO we created and select Per Machine. We then linked the GPO to each room's OU and most PC's have picked it up. However in each room we have about 5 PC's that don't show the printer. No matter who logs onto that PC, no-one gets the printer without manually adding it from the directory. Sometimes its not in the directory and wont let you add it as it already thinks its allocted but doesnt show in the printers list. A gpresult /h reports the printer policy applied to the machine fine, yet it doesnt show. Any ideas? Can a printer be allocated differently per machine which has a better success rate?

I would advice you quickly nipp it in the bud then with ipads and tell them what they can't do and see if they still want them. They are a bit of a pain in the rear when you get to 10 or more without any training or knowledge of using them. They are 'The way forward' according to our school...im not convinced atall. In some departments great as an additional tool for educational apps but to replace a microsoft network and desktops? NO WAY! Also they are next to useless for teachers as a sole device because they cant do anything productive on them Considerations against ipads: You MUST have a school credit card or the volume license, many admin departments won't allow this. Saving documents to ipads then getting them off and back to a windows pc to printer / view / edit requires third party apps such as dropbox / googledrive = more logins No shared areas No printing No email because its a shared device Adaptors needed to show screen on your board or additional hardware / software No backup of files should they be deleted Your wireless needs to be sufficiant You can't deploy ibooks, you have to install them one by one on every device that needs them Every time a new app is needed you will have to recall them all back into the office to be resynced manually You will be forever called into classrooms asking how this app works or how that app works and why has this happened! Theres a lot to consider when implimenting them which many schools will not consider when purchasing. If they still want to go ahead, you can manage it but only with the right equipment and nohow yourself

We too have tried giving advice to the powers that be about ipads and such but the stuff turns up anyway! Then when its in use it's 'why doesn't it do this, why won't it do that' 'i need to save a print from them and access the shared areas' and we can stand there and say 'i told you so' The device then quickly gathers dust and the new next best thing is forced upon us and it starts again haha 7 years in you will get used to it, welcome to the world of ICT in schools!

We arn't, I don't think its possible. The only way would be to create a document on the ipad in pages, save it to googledrive / dropbox etc then log in on the windows pc and download it or visa versa. You cant integrate the ipad into your users documents / profiles on the windows network that i know of. There's plenty of things ipads are no good for a documents is one of the biggest things. They really arn't the way forward in my eyes. Be warned also ibooks are a royal pain in the butt if you want to roll out on a larger scale.

Your going to find it really hard to deploy ipads on a larger scale than say 10 as you need Apple Configurator ideally. I have tried Meraki without much luck! We invested in a MAC Mini and using Apple Configurator its quite straight froward once you have the hang of it. You will need to create a master Apple ID account for the school then use that to sign up for a volume license (free of charge) http://www.apple.com/uk/education/volume-purchase-program/ Once that's actived you can buy apps at a reduced cost in the quantity needed and import them into apple configurator. Without this, you would need to create an Apple ID, purchase an itunes gift voucher and then put that account onto 5 ipads and then create another, buy another voucher and do the next 5 etc all manually. Meraki may give an alternative solution but we tried getting Meraki to work aswell as iphone conifgurator for windows both without much luck.
