Hello everyone, I hope everyone had a good Christmas holiday! I have just finished upgrading all desktops and laptops in school to Windows 7 and all devices are joined to the domain. Each teacher has a laptop which is their personal device to use as they please when at home. At the moment, they are unable to install software or home printers as obviously group policy is preventing this. Is it possible to give the teachers admin rights to their own laptop or allow them to install software on their logon? If so what's the easiest way of doing this whilst keeping them on the domain? The only way I can think is if I create a local admin account for those people who need it and they use that to install software and drivers but this is a bit of a pain for everyone. Many thanks

Hi Just to let you all know we managed to get everything working without having to reboot the host! I killed the associated svhost service which unstuck the windows management intrusion service and allowed me to restart all the services successfully. I can now manage machines again and the failover cluster is active Regards

Dear all, I would like to sync the my documents mapped drive for all staff laptops using the sync center and offline files. Please does someone know the required GPO settings to make this work? Regards

Good Morning, Please can someone post the required settings to place into a group policy? It seems to have changed in Server 2012, there are no point and print options anymore which is how i got printers working in my last school! Both DC's are on the host which needs restarting though so no DC would exist when host is restarted! There is however now a third DC i didnt know about so yes, now the situation is we should still have a DC available when restarting the host.

The second one is on that host too Chris. Bit of a nightmare! However, i just spoke to the company that put the hosts in and they have said there IS another DC installed on the DPM box as a VM (physical hardware off the cluster) which is already the primary DNS server so we should be fine to shutdown machines, reboot the host and bring everything back up! Sorry i didn't know this being new to this network, maybe problem solved!

I am certainly going to add a physical DC to the infrastructure, just haven't had chance yet as only been here a month. If i shut down the DC in question to do that, i can't start it back up due to the error so if it didnt work, id have no DC. The dead services stop the management full stop, heres what i get:

Morning All, I have created DC3 this morning on the working host and have replicated data across from the existing DC. AD and DNS are now fully populated. Just applying updates to server now and will reboot host later in the week or at weekend. Im guessing i don't need to do anything else? Aslong as DC3 is up when the second host is rebooted we should be good to go?

haha indeed it does! I am currently building a third DC as we speak on the working host, will let you know when its up and replicated and where i go next! Many thanks again

Thank-you guys! Can someone just run through the steps to take to get the DC up and running on the working host please? I came from a school with VMware and I'm fairly new to Hyper-v...don't like it much!# Do I call the DC the same as the current one on the new host? I had a look at Veeam a few weeks ago at a seminar, it looked amazing! Going to get a price for it!

Yep the hosts are joined to the domain! I don't have much confidence in the backups either as DPM doesn't seem to let me take a full backup of a VM only partitions on them? I plan on doing an overhaul of Hyper-V and backup's but like I say have only been here a month or so. I will probably have to copy the VHD's of the DC and start up a new VM on the first host just incase. I would have thought there would be a way to force Windows Management Instrumentation service to restart? I have already tried killtask /pid /f without any luck.

Yep they are on shared storage. So if host fails to come back up for any reason I can just make a new vm for my dc's on host 1 and reattach the storage? Is there anyway of getting the services to start without a reboot? Yep it's Hyper-v server 2008 R2. Thanks for help so far guys. I'm pretty sure I set the dc's to automatically start on host restart so provided it comes back up ok should be alright. As DC's are not started until host is booted, will I be able to get onto my PC to remote into the host or will I need to attach a monitor to the host itself?

Dear all, I'm having a bit of a nightmare with one of my Hyper-V hosts and wondered if anyone could help. All of a sudden today, my second Hyper-V Host displayed 'No virtual machines installed' . All virtual machines on that Host ARE working currently. Did a bit of research and on TechNet they suggesed restarting the 'Windows Management Instrumentation' service which saves rebooting to fix this issue. Unfortunately, I went to do this but the service was already in a 'Stopping' state and has got stuck. This has resolved in all Hyper-v management services stopping too. I would just reboot the Host, however both of my DC's are on this host too so I want to avoid it unless 100% necessary. This is something I am looking at sorting out ASAP as it's been a concern of mine since starting at my new school a month ago. If I do need to restart the Host, how should I go about this baring in mind BOTH of the DC's are on this host? I cant migrate machines because none of the management tools are working on the host in question! All I can think is safely shutdown the servers on HOST 2, reboot and hope for the best! Any ideas?

Good Morning, I have realised in Server 2012 Group Policy Manager there are no longer options for Point and Print settings for Windows 7. This means its asking for elevation to install print drivers for all users which is a total pain. What replaced Point and Print in Sever 2012 and what settings do I need to allow all staff members to download and install print drivers from a print server? Regards

Hi Guys, Just starting to build a new image for Windows 7 and i need to make sure certain groups have full access to the program files x86 folders and the windows folder. When i try and change the permissions for Program Files (x86) everything is greyed out dispite being logged on as the local administrator. If i try and add the groups a C: drive level, it says access denied. The current owner of all files seems to be 'TrustedInstaller' which i think is causing the issue. Who should the owner be by default? Keeping it as TrustedInstaller denies access to most folders and programs such as SIMS wont install. If i take ownership of the files, it then stuffs up everything else! Many thanks

I loaded up MMC on a PC, created a template, disabled the service, exported it as an inf file, put the inf file on DC, imported it into GP Manager on DC but nothing is showing. Regards

Yeah on mine i do but not on end users PC's. I believe it is the fault of the service mentioned or atleast i want to try that first. Any ideas how to get a custom service into the Group Policy Manager on the DC without having to install the software on the server?

Thanks, i have a feeling my PC is probably different to the others so i will look to make a GPO for the service you initially mentioned

I have found that service on another machine so it is likely to be that for those machines, however it is still on mine. I disabled Bonjour Service on mine and no joy. Need to find a way of disabling that service for all PC's though GPO now.

I certainly do not have that on my machine, although i only have CS6 installed on this one but it does have the problem with dual networks listed

Can't seem to find that service...Don't suppose you have a screenshot? Should it be listed in services.msc?

Morning All, We are currently in the process of upgrading all our PC's to Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit and have a bit of a strange issue. Its picking up two networks, one being our domain and another listed as 'Unknown' This stops the PC from reaching the DC and refuses to logon to the domain. We get 'There are no logon servers to perform your request' and an error trying to join PC to the domain manually. NIC is only picking up 1 IP Address which makes me think its not a port tagging issue, so where is this spoof network coming from? It didn't happen with Windows XP. Any help appriciated as its holding us up from deploying Windows 7. I have only been here 1 month so don't know an aweful lot of history on the network.
