Hi Guys, I currently have an old Terminal Server running 2003 R2 that staff use to work from home. Although it serves its purpose, it is fairly slow and needs upgrading. Although i'd like to build up a Server 2012 R2 box, I fear my staff will not be able to get on with it due to the different interface. We didn't upgrade to Windows 8.1 for this very reason. To keep it in line with the look of Windows 7 (and to stop my hair from going grey), I was thinking of replacing the Terminal Server with a new 2008 R2 RDP server. If I create the server, install the remote desktop services role and give it the same IP address as the old one, will it work with existing settings? For example, staff access it by launching mstsc.exe and type in sername.myschool.com and login using domain credentials so I don't want to have to change this. Hoping to just do a slight upgrade for now to buy us time for something better in a few years. Already purchased the CAL's within the Microsoft Schools Agreement for remote desktop Regards

You can still do it as I looked just now on Group Policy Editor, but I understand it to still be very bad practise! Would love to know if there is a script! Surely though if storing in a gpo is not a good idea, nor is storing in a script?

Hi all, Is there a way to SAFELY reset the local admin account password on workstations using a script or other method? I know you can do it through GPO but its not safe as password is stored on SYSVOL xml file. It would be great to know before me and my technician start running round to do it manually!!

Hi everyone, A delightful student at my school has managed to reset the local admin password by performing the sethc.exe hack which brings up a command prompt at the login page when activating sticky keys (shift 5 times) in windows 7. Luckily my technician caught him doing it on monitoring software. Anyone know how to prevent this? Can I just put a machine policy on to prevent sticky keys?

Yep I just found that same article after doing some research at home tonight. Thank-you. Hopefully it will work after Q1 then? I wonder if Office online works on the Hudl 2 as a work around until then. Will have to try tomorrow.

Hi Guys, BYOD trials are starting at our school this week and I have Office 365 licenses to dish out as part of our EES agreement, however I am struggling to get the Office 365 apps to work on a Tesco Hudl 2. Its running Kitkat, meets the specifications outlined in the office 365 apps in the play store but simply doesn't display them when browsing on the google play store. I have logged onto google play store website on a PC and it says my device (Tesco Hudl 2) isn't compatible but doesn't say why. Anyone else using Office 365 apps on the Hudl 2 or know why this isn't working? Regards

I spoke to someone from second line support at smoothwall and he managed to get it all working. I'd log a call with them to find out how its done. Regards

Hi Guys, I had smoothwall installed last week and there's a problem with HTTPS traffic on android devices. Smoothwall has been configured as a transparent proxy for mobile devices. Apple devices work fine, Windows devices need a certificate installed and Android doesn't display HTTPS websites. The following error is displayed in the android internet browser: "The sites security certificate is not trusted" and the page fails to load. How do I get around this please? Also is there an easier way to deploy the certificate to personally owned windows devices?

Can I please dig this one back up from last year rather than start a new topic....I am starting to look into themes for owa 2013, I have made one no problem but I want to change the fonts and the way unread mail looks as at the moment getting complaints from users its not very clear. I have followed instructions on TechNet, it says to edit some CSS files but the entries it says to change aren't in those files. Any ideas how I can change the unread messages bar colour and fonts?

We'll ours has quad core and 16gb memory so should be quite quick too! Is it my eyes or is the text on the web app maybe a little bit blurry? (Might just be my graphics cards on home PC 2 x GTX 670's) I don't think you can change the font of unread messages on web app only outlook 2013. Has anyone made a custom theme for exchange 2013 web app? I have turned off conversation view but its still sorting emails by date and showing days of the week and 'last week' etc

It's ready to go, just moving mailboxes over tonight and the job should be complete. I know someone who is an exchange expert so he helped me with the migration. It would have taken much longer on my own I must admit. I have logged into the 2013 web app, it looks good but a little like outlook 2013 in the fact unread messages don't stand out too much. Not sure how my users are going to get on with it but will need to give them time to adapt. How do you ungroup emails? They are currently grouped by week and in order of newest to oldest. I just want them ungrouped on mine.

Summer would be an ideal time if your already on 2010 anyway. I am coming from Exchange 2007 so a fairly big upgrade for us.

Thank-you. Office 365 is not an option for us at the moment but I will look into it in the future. I have a new exchange box ready to go for tomorrow just can't decide on 2010 or 2013. 2010 is obviously more mature, but if 2013 is stable then it makes sense to upgrade to 2013?

Do you know if there's a demo site anywhere? 90% of my users will probably access it from a laptop or PC but there are quite a lot of people now who like to check their email on mobile devices and with BYOD on the horrizon for us, I think it will be a perfect match! What do you get on android? The 2010 style interface?

Good Morning all, I have an exchange upgrade taking place tomorrow and I cant decide between exchange 2010 and 2013. We are currently on exchange 2007. Is anyone running Exchange 2013? If so is it good? The owa is particually appealing to me, being optimised for touch screen. So many people now are accessing email on phones and tablets, it would be a great feature to have. Is there any reason not to go for exchange 2013? Regards

Yes I would wait but we are getting low system resources errors, and VM's start shutting down on their own to reserve system memory in the hosts. I plan on upgrading memory first to get a working fail over cluster and to resolve the issues we have been having, then migrating data and decommissioning some DC's. They are mainly Server 2003 so going to take awhile to migrate things over and also need to make extra VM's which I cant do currently to migrate data across.

FARR to many! I have been here 3 months, the system was P2V'd and then built on by several people and we now have 29 VM's! As part of my plan for this year, I plan on reducing this to a maximum of 14 VM's in total spread across 2 hosts. We currently have 2 exchange servers, 6 DC's and 4 file servers, a Sibalious server, 2 print servers...im slowly migrating data and moving roles to shutdown some of the old ones.

Hi, I need to upgrade the memory in both of my Hyper-V Hosts as I currently only have 12gb spare in each and we are having problems. The failover cluster isn't working as there isn't enough memory on either host to migrate machines. Below are screenshots of my 2 hosts. Currently each one has 60GB memory and I want to ideally double it. What memory do I need and where is best to buy this from? What combination of memory should I install? Im thinking of either removing the 2gb modules and replacing them with 8gb's or keep the 2gb modules and just populate the empty slots with 8gb's. Granted I cant migrate all machines across to one host prior to the upgrade, should I just shutdown each VM and then the host and hope all comes back up ok?

Can we have local profiles for laptops and roaming for desktops?

I would do this but i would probably be killed for getting rid of staffs desktop files and shortcuts. I understand the need for everyone to have their own desktop shortcuts so I don't want to take it away if I don't have to unless there's a better way of doing it. I don't think one desktop for all members of staff would work too well. Redirection to a folder in their home drive might work. Do you allow staff to change wallpaper and start menu items?

We currently use roaming profiles for staff and students. Students are still on XP and I have just upgraded all staff machines to Windows 7. I plan on scraping roaming profiles for students when I upgrade workstations to Windows 7 as they are not needed for students, however I want to keep them for staff as it seemed to work quite well in my last school. Having said this, I am having a few issues in my new school using this method as staff have laptops. Staff are logging on in multiple places, for example on a classroom PC and their laptop at the same time. They then add / remove content on their desktop on the PC, log off, use their laptop, log off and of course the changes they made on the desktop have been overwritten by the copy on the laptop as that was the last device to be logged off. Is there a way to stop this from happening? I want desktops, wallpapers and user settings to follow staff members which i'm sure can be achieved through group policy somehow? How many of you use Roaming Profiles for staff?
