The risk of running Windows XP after support ends April 2014
cpjitservices replied to Arthur's topic in IT News
XP was and still is a good OS, BUT i think Windows 7 does replace XP. 7 is what XP was. The only thing that annoys me at the moment for software compatibility is that I have a Windows 8 machine - the one im using now - I want to connect to my VMware server via vsphere client, but the server still runs version 4 - version 4 of vshphere client doesnt run on Windows 8. So until I upgrade I have to use a Windows 7 machine to manage my host. I remember all the talks about upgrading to XP when I worked for a school that was running Windows 98, no software will work etc etc - I've never had a problem with XP and software its always just worked, as has Windows 7. So if you have got Windows XP, make sure you have a damn good AV suite and firewalls correctly configured! I wouldnt like to run XP in any sort of enterprise environment but IF I really had too, theres no way that thing would be allowed to talk to the internet! -
I never had 2 discs for 2003, there was just one - we had 2003 Standard. You could download SP2 from the net and extract the files see if that works ?

Hit the ESC key when it looks for PXe servers - You get a screen with a spinning cursor looking for DHCP - hit ESC and it should continue to boot.

Just a quick update everyone, I inserted the vmware 5 upgrade disc into my server.... received an error on screen saying boot failed, burnt new disk - same error, tried USB DVD Drive - same error! Tried disc in another server and it booted from the disc fine!! This was at 5:15pm - left it and went home.

I may just do that if I dont get any other offers.. not in a mad rush but need it done! I thought I'd ask on here as if someone has a server they will know whether it can run Virtualization or not, I've looked one bay but you can never tell, and alot of people on there dont know but a couple of HP's have caught my eye if they stay cheap.

I could do, but I need to do it out of hours as the server is one of the main ones in the DC, once the servers are migrated I can fire them up on another server. I could do an in-place upgrade but with this being our only server I don't want to take the chance that something could go wrong especially when this is a crucial server to the Phones and network etc. I also don't know whats going to happen regarding licensing when I install version 5 - as the version we have at the moment is a paid for license yet im put version 5 free on the box to upgrade it and I think I may run into difficulties there. So I need a server so I can keep things running. Once I have migrated the servers onto another Server, I can keep the VM's running!

Had the same thought, I've got an i3, but it has no ram, no HD, no optical drive etc etc and I have no spares kicking around!! Yeah, I know what you mean also if I put it on a workstation someone is likely to turn it off.. Ideally I was after something rack mounted Like a Dell 2950 or a HP 360

Has anyone got an old server sitting in a cupboard somewhere wanting some love ? I need to migrate some servers off of my main ESXI box so that I can update it to version 5, currently the server is on version 4. I am wondering if anyone has got an old server kicking around that will run VMware Free that I could use to back off these VM's .. Ideally for the price of shipping ? I'd even arrange courier if someone can box it and give me the sizes and weight! Thanks all.

Hi guys and gals, as the title says im migrating from 2008 R2 to 2012 Essentials, or rather researching so that at the end of the week I can go ahead. I have seen videos of 2008 DC's being completely migrated to 2012 using powershell tools, this includes roles, files and folders, users etc. My concern is that our folder re-direction for start menus and profiles are held on the DC's as are the shares in which they reside, would all of those be migrated to the new server ? or once I've built 2012 and got all the roles etc migrated could I then demote my 2008 server and just use it for the the re-direction shares so users stay on the same server ? **Head hurts** ! Thanks all! Hopefully there's a good weekend ahead of everyone on here this week! Chris

Always on ebay, have had all manner of things on there! even servers - one of which is sitting behind me. A Dell 2950 - cost me £15 and courier was £25. Arrived it works perfect!! Has been singing a lovely tune, running VM's on oVirt for the past 6 months now without hiccup.

PfSense... although in KC land I have to put my router in Bridge mode in order to use PfSense as my home router!!

This annoys me... I usually get 2 maybe 3 quotes from suppliers and go with the cheapest / best warranty etc. But when I go to a supplier, and then go to another supplier who does the same thing - no difference in the item and see a 5 - 6000 pound price difference then alarm bells ring. I hate suppliers who put huge margins on stuff they sell. I understand that profit is good, but thats too much! priced themselves way out!

Hi all, My wife is taking up photography as her hobby, although she would like to earn a bit out of it as she goes along,..... Shes been offered A Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ20 - the person wants between £80 - £120 for it. Wifey has borrowed this cam for a few weeks see how she gets on and the stuff shes produced is fantastic! She's wondering what to do, it comes with all the batteries, chargers and the other bits n bobs, I dont know that much about them tbh. Her main problem with the cam is it will only take a max of a 2GB SD Card and I cant see online whether it can be update via firmware to be able to put bigger cards in. What would you do ?

We've got 2x Dell 2600 Servers here, all the SCSI drives are dead so they are sitting under my desk waiting to go to Server heaven. Although I may strip out the cases and custom build a server.... The cases are solid!!
