Hi, I've been searching for some time for a decent old server to play about with at home. I'm looking for any old kit that people are either throwing away or selling for sub-£100. Preferably a decent processor/amount of RAM, but not neccesarily a huge amount of HDD space. Will be running Windows 2008 Server on it so needs to be able to cope with that basically. If anyone has anything they are looking to get rid of and fits the bill, would be very appreciative. Kind Regards Steve

The 10p in the £ tax bracket was scrapped and your allowance before tax should have gone up. So for example last years Tax allowance was 5525 (or something similar) so anything after that 0-2600 was on the 10p tax and anything from 2600-35000 was 20p in the £. Doing away with the 10p now means you pay from 0-35000 @ 20p but you are given a higher threshold for your allowance, so it should be roughly 6000. Unless you're like me.... I've been paying basic rate tax for the past 2 1/2 years and i'm really looking forward to seeing the difference when they sort it out. As well as looking forward to the cheque with plenty of 0's on it that i'm owed. Again this month in a new job im on basic rate, but hopefully that will all change next month when it has been sorted. Paying £100 a month extra tax for almost 30 months, wish i knew then what i do now

You can supervise and close something you are aware of but in a Primary you aren't sitting at the front of the classroom monitoring screens, you have to be with certain children and it can be very taxing in a suite of 30 computers. Yes policies are in place but it can/does happen on occassion and it's important for the teacher to deal with it in a professional manner, but can't be expected to monitor every screen as well as help children with their work. Handy tool, but education in e-safety needs to improve, having heard something on the tv this morning that may well be happening. *Former primary school ICT teacher*

I use uk2.net for my business hosting and to be honest have had a very good experience with them. Hardly any downtime and customer support is pretty prompt. £75 a year including 3 domain names. Thumbs up from me

Technology for toddlers’ scheme risks creating a screen-addict generation

You don't simply say to a child of that age - press the button on a remote control and it will turn on/off, tick their name off and that's that one done. It's important to incorporate these kinds of activities in their 'play/investigation' to take that article as printed it may sound nutty, but it is in no way as complex as it sounds. The simple programming of a Bee Bot to move forward completes half of those on the list. To be honest this has been going on for years I have been personally teaching these topics to children for the past 18/20 months. I even remember being taught it myself in Infant school and that was 20 odd years ago. It doesn't make obese children, it purely gives them an insight into how things are controlled which they build on over their school life, doesn't mean we won't have any sports stars coming up though the ranks does it? -

It is his job to have to deal with that I'm afraid and it is completely out of order that he takes the high and mighty attitude. The guy should be strung up and shot.

To be perfectly honest, I would wait and see how the technician gets on with the job. He may rise to the challenge and it would only be fair to give the guy a chance. I would be kinda annoyed if I was told of these responsibilites only to have them taken away a few weeks later. Especially as an independant school could snap up a network manager at a pretty fast pace.

Just to let you know, tried the 1.2 version of the package and it worked fine. No errors whatsoever. Strange one but hey, hasn't the whole Synetrix takeover been strange

Right, they've sorted the DNS servers now so it points to the right place. All installed and kind of working Having a problem logging into the admin, using the 'admin / admin' login. It basically comes up with a quick message before it returns back to the login page, it doesn't however come up with a bad username or password. Thanks for your help in advance Steve

I'm currently trying to setup our school using the EMBC hosting. However, there have been problems with the fact that whichever directory I put the package in, it fails to pick it up. Does the package work with the embc webhosting? It supports php and mysql but should it have a specific version? Thanks in advance Steve

Pupils, Computers & Techy Staff Ratio (Northants/Leics)
apoth0r replied to kmount's topic in General Chat
35 Suite computers (2 suites) 9 classroom desktops 25 staff laptops 2 servers 5 staff pc's I also teach 16 lessons a week. Find ICT resources and write lesson plans for every class in the school. Setting up and running of a website. E-safety sessions for parents. Learning Platform. Staff emails. Anything to do with ICT is abruptly sent my way, they even asked me to change a fuse in a kettle once, they got a short sharp answer. -
