Hi guys, just wanted to start a thread to find out what people are currently doing with their VLE. As a real-life example I'm currently working on the tutorials for teachers, including the setting up of courses (the settings involved in doing so) and what teachers can do to differ their courses from others. Fortunately we have a department who have used Moodle before so they have done us a tip top example of their work. I'm hoping to have a guest login available soon (once the majority of the work is done) to allow yourselves to take a peak. I have to say my motivation has gone through the roof with this, I'm very excited to be a part of it. Better late then never I guess! :-)

I have to say that Moodle has been fantastic. Very easy to use for all parties and it's free. What's the point in paying through the roof for something that is as good if not better then any of the others. I think theres around 150,000 moodle sites in the world that will agree with me.

If you are buying sky hd and a ps3 later in the year then surely go for the full HD. You'll absolutely hate yourself for spending that much anyway on less technology. Especially if you see another TV when you recieve yours cheaper and better in a years time, nothing worse. I'm glad i went for the 1080i version because although it isnt full HD, it's certainly worth getting the best you can for what you can afford, HD is here to stay and its well worth keeping up.

Unfortunately it depends on the people too, bit like driving test instructors really.

Theres a downloadable game on the Wii that you might like (a friend of mine works for Frontier games who helped design it) it's called LostWinds. However inhumane teachers make OFSTED out to be, problems do arise with technology and OFSTED, if one occurs, would be looking for that teacher to have a backup lesson plan to work around the problem. A properly thought out lesson plan would cover all "known" instances of problems and clearly state the problem in the plan. P*** poor planning leads to p*** poor performance. Word.

If you have a fulltime PAYE contract and you pay national insurance through that then (assuming you are self employed) you have a limit of £6000 which you are able to earn before you pay for a second lot of national insurance. You must however inform the national insurance people with a covering letter stating your earnings from your second job (with evidence/bank statements) asking to be exempt from the self-assessed national insurance contributions. This will last 3 years. If they are both PAYE jobs and you are not self-employed then the national insurance is calculated taking into account both jobs and the total earnings for the year and divided equally, iirc.

Welcome to the Moodlers social group. I presume you have made the decision or looking to make a decision on what platform to use. What could be better than a well thought out open source (yes free) learning platform. I hope this social group turns out to be a successful decision where we can all share our ideas and best practice. I find moodle to be a great way for schools to come together and instead of continually reinventing the wheel, as we all seem to do in education, we can instead share our resources, make things easier for ourselves and concentrate our skills into ensuring teaching and learning is the main focus of our efforts. I'm very interested in this, so thanks for posting a poll. My business (once fully functional) shall be targeting schools without provision (or very little) for technical support. I however have done some research and have decided to undercut the county system by half and will provide more in the teaching and learning aspect. Trying to move primary schools along without stupid costs some larger companies charge. Adding a new pc to a domain should not be £60. I'm rather infuriated that schools have very little choice when there are few options with regard to primary tech support. Yes some of it is worth £60 but being tied to a contract for all tech support is just rediculous. I've worked out I can save primary schools over £3000 a year, with the added addition of someone who will be willing to listen and help plan future developments, not only from a technical point of view. 8 hours a day once every 2 weeks with additional support available if a certain need arises. Schools shouldn't be made to pay for being forced into a system designed to bleed them of their budgets. Get the money back into the school, and provide the children with the technology and knowledge they deserve.

Well i'm the Moodleman at my workplace and it's pretty darn good so far. Yes it's massive and the possibilities are huge, but until some content is provided by teachers there really isn't a lot to do. It's down to the teachers to give Moodle the backbone, without their input and work it really isn't anything but a glorified webspace. Talk to your head, explain what actually it is about, setup a test moodle server (very easy to setup) and start playing with it. It's very hard to explain Moodle without actually doing something yourself, it's an active learning process for all, inc staff and students.

I would suggest trying Moodle for your primary school, gives you enough flexability without being tied to any contracts. I'd be willing to give you a hand in setting it up and passing on any information I have created into documents so far for our school. Give me a PM, more then happy to help.
