Have you thought about using the LEA email based system considering you have already paid for it in your broadband fee's? Might be worth looking into, saving even more money? Not sure on what Birmingham uses as a provider but EMBC certainly do provide that service.

I very very very rarely go under £125 for a graphics card, the post above looks like a very good solution. Personally I'm a big fan of the nvidia cards, in particular the BFG ones. Had mine about a year and it's still blisteringly quick!! (I did pay £200 odd for it though) Depends on how long before you upgrade again I guess, I tend to go with a couple of years with a £600/£700 budget every two years.

It's very easy to say x + y = z but in reality it's not always as simple as saying I have these certifications, i have this experience. Not once has anyone mentioned interview technique, come across as a shy or nervous person and you're already struggling, you don't know what other candidates were there and they could have been more deserving. Fair enough in your view you didn't get a good go at it but you have to make the most of it when you're there. You didn't get a job, i'm sure there are many others on here who don't have the qualifications you have and get turned down at least twice a week, with those certs I'm surprised you haven't been snapped up already, there is definately plenty out there......

Ok got it working, had to restart for silverlight 2.0 It looks good i have to say, interesting spin on displaying results, however, is it much of a muchness for searching? Google revolutionised it by making it simple. I spose it could be handy for in a school library to display books or something but im pretty sure people are so used to Google, they wouldn't go anywhere else. I'd be interested to have a further play and see what more of an opinion i can generate.

It's a rather small primary I'm doing the work for and they already had a system in place, so the head was sold on the prices and use of space. I'll always negotiate with the head and find out more of what they want and try to compromise that way. There didn't appear to many problems with the current system, but it is running on a slightly newer system, which probably helped its cause. It's just finding the time to work through the problems, it does still work and is a great solution but it's just a bit of a pain not having time to have a proper play with it, don't want to be costing them too much money! Shall apply the patch and see if it's any better, thanks again mate.

problem is i also have trouble registering the products because of the same error. Wish they put a bit more thought into the setup processes before releasing things, they don't even answer the forums, seems pointless?!?!

Hi guys, Came across a slight problem with the NComputing kit in one of my primary schools yesterday, hadn't used it before so set it all up almost copying the previous build they have in another classroom. However when I try to update to fix a few bugs we are having with them (updates only available through an .exe) I get an error regarding "unable to connect". I'm not entirely sure what needs to be enabled/disabled to allow this, just wondering if anyone else has come across it as the ncomputing forum has been pretty useless with regards to a solution. You could setup a virtual image to allow certain functions which then reverts back to a 'start' state each time they log off. I haven't really done anything with SQL so i don't know the ins and outs but that is what various course providers have done in workshop environments.

As you are reasonably new to the school I would suggest noting down what is actually used within the school and base your purchases around that, with slightly more extreme scenarios. Find out what the ICT action plan is for your school, what has been purchased before, what they wanted to purchase before you arrived and negotiate accordingly. It's far too easy to go into a school with your own agenda, but it really is about compromising with the head (and the budget) to come up with a solution that benefits everyone, especially the children. I don't believe in buying expensive SAN solutions for a primary school, even if it is fairly large, a standard backup would be fine to tape and would save money for exciting technology implemented elsewhere in the school. You have to remember primaries aren't like secondary's and cannot justify buying rackmounts and amazing 'behind the scenes technology'. The teachers and kids want something in front of them, to see the real benefits of using the technology rather than being an end user. (as do the parents from past experience) Perhaps go through the Becta self evaluation stuff before buying anything, come up with an agreed 2/3 year action plan and go from there. Just don't dive in!
