We've had a lot of building work done over recent years. Network cables that were in classrooms have been cut and coiled up in roof spaces. They are still patched in in the server room. Apart from patch panel / switch space, is there any benefit to unpatching these? It messes with our electricians head as he says its like having an electrical dead short ! Thanks

We use one of these if they are available elsewhere https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B004NSXJJY/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

Hi We don't run WSUS here, we deploy all cumulative updates via PDQ deploy. I have a group policy that disables checking of windows updates on a WSUS server. It's been running fine until this week, and PC's are now popping up, regardless of who is logged on, with "There is a new feature upgrade". Staff are clicking install and when the machine reboots, the 1803 update is getting applied and upgrading them from 1709. Any ideas please?

At our main site we currently use 300mb Virgin cable and 80mb plus net as failover. However we’ve just moved to a 100mb leased line. We have another school joining our MAT and we are putting them on an 80/20 EoFTTC line. Have you considered a provider that provides that service? As above, just check things like sims, anycomms etc don’t rely on you been on an LA connection. The school we are taking has one big AD connected to rest of LA sites -
We have had a Sophos UTM SG for 3 years now. It has been bullet proof. Will be looking to upgrade to XG next year.

Definitely Netsupport DNA. Logs all keywords in programs - not just internet searches. Can provide photos / videos of when the word was typed in. Does a load of other things too. PM me if you need any more info or contact one of the Netsupport guys on here. There is a continuous development program and support is fantastic.

Have an Synology RS816 here for backups but also use a Fujitsu Calvin. This is fast enough to run vmware replicas if needed

How much extra time do you put in out of hours?

I work 8 till 4, but usually in 20 minutes early. Go home dead on 4 unless something major has happened as I like to collect my daughter from nursery and spend some time with her. Often log in when she's gone to bed though, even if its just to answer emails I didn't get round to / plan jobs list for the following day. My argument is that if it doesn't get done, it's there the following day, with a load more jobs so I'll do my best to fix them. SMT have been fine with me when I needed time off for baby scans etc, and I've not needed to work the time back so I think it works both ways. -
Hi We are finally looking into removing classicshell and customising the start menu. I have created the start menu in the first screen shot. Logged on locally and not the domain. Exported fine. Copied to a different machine, copied the file to a folder on C drive. Set GPO of test user (domain) to get the start menu from the C drive not network share. The result is a totally different menu Anyone know how I might be able to get it looking correct. Thanks 1 - Exported menu 2 - Menu when logged on to different machine

Hi, Someone has pointed out to me that the ICO say "If a school wishes to use pictures of their staff on the school website, staff must provide an unambiguous indication that they consent to their picture being used." I'm guessing that I now need staff to sign up before the 25th May to consent to their photo been on the website and up in the school reception ? Or can we use it under a different processing reason?

Students plugging in phones and disabling USB for all staff
karldenton replied to tj2419's topic in How do you do....it?
We use Netsupport DNA to control our USB usage. You can set different policies for different machines. You can register devices before they are plugged in or allow staff to request access. You can also approve by computer or user. Memory cards and USB fall under the same category. -

Selecting a Web/Content Filtering solution
karldenton replied to Ditto's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Hi I have 2 setup on our network. I use a Sophos UTM SG230 for the firewall and filtering. It accepts several incoming connections, works happily with AD for filtering groups etc. The only downside to it is the reporting. Effectiveness. - 5 Ease of use - 3 Value for money - 4 Support - 5 Reporting (i.e. to DSL/Heads etc.) - 2 Flexibility/configuration - 5 I then use Netsupport DNA on top of that for the reporting / online safety side. Very easy to use, nice reports Effectiveness - 5 Ease of use - 5 Value for money - 5 Support - 5 Reporting (i.e. to DSL/Heads etc.) - 5 Flexibility/configuration - 5 -
Hi I'm in the process of changing our department procedures, one of these is the jobs list. At present, staff log requests on an Office 365 group conversations. They like it as its easy for them. I need something for the IT team to log tasks / projects / ongoing items Requirements are: Simple - tabular excel like look that can be filtered. Ability to complete a weekly task and it automatically change the due date to the following week (and ideally some record that its been completed) Conditional formatting for due dates that are overdue I was thinking sharepoint list / excel sheet in Office 365 I've looked at freshdesk etc but ideally needs to be something more simple. Am I overthinking ! Thanks
