Just a heads up for any of you who don’t know. There seems to be a problem with the HP print drivers and GPP. If you deploy your printers using GPP and start to notice slow login times this could be why. Interactive Services Detection in Application Event Log when Mapping HP Printers You will notice Interactive Services Detection logs in event viewer and quite a dramatic increase in login times. Might be a fix for it, I’ve not looked a great deal yet. Here’s how much it effected my login times. All times are from the login screen until the desktop loads 4 printers mapped with GPP = 1 Minute 20 seconds 3 printers mapped with GPP = 1 Minute 20 seconds 2 Printers = 47 seconds 1 Printer = 28 seconds No printers = 7 seconds Printers mapped using logon scripts = 9 seconds As you can see it really did add a lot of time on. Bit of a shame, because GPP was nice and easy to manage printer. Will stick with scripts for now and keep the fast login times until I find a fix

Disable Sticky Keys and High Contrast - Wiki Disable sticky keys and high contrast. Works well for me. If you want to disable high contrast from the login screen you can do this (Be aware it disables all accessibility tool features such as the on screen keyboard, so only apply if your certain you don’t need) Computer -- windows settings -- security settings -- file system Add = %SystemRoot%\System32\Utilman.exehide In the security settings for the file add everyone and deny read and execute. Apply and ok it and then click 'replace existing permissions on all subfolders and files'

What OS ? Has anything changed on the computer since it last worked? You could try 1) Rejoin computer to the domain 2 Reimiage the computer ( Not really a solution since you dont find the root of the issue, however in my experience atleast, it fixes the mass majority of random problem if you need it fixed asap )

I would boot into safe mode, disconnect your computer from the network and do some scans. 1) Run ccleaner on it CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download 2) Run malwarebytes Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download 3) Run your AV scan

Not for me. If a student points a shortcut at c: drive and then double click it they get greeted with "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" I'll have another look to see if I have anything else enabled to prevent this. I can always upload my policy if I can’t find anything else and you can’t either. Maybe you will see something I’ve missed that I have set.

Is it this policy? User - Windows settings - Admin templates - Windows Components/Windows Explorer Prevent access to drives from My Computer ( c: drive) Thats the only policy I've got set along with the Hide these specified drives in My Computer policy and I cant access the c: drive by using the shortcut trick ( However some annoying software seems to ignore every rule set and allows you to see all when you go to save )

Why do some of my computers not have the hibernate option on the login screen then ? nothing like powercfg is set up. Must be a way to remove the option since some dont have it.

What issues did you have with speed? I've not had this set up for long, but so far everything including the item level targeting is running smoothly. Hopefuly it stays this way.

Our of interest anyone whos running Windows 7 enterprise have you tried AppLocker and how did you find it? pmaryan, best way to set up software restriction is make a test account and only apply the policy to that one account. Then you can figure out what to block and if you do block any important stuff by mistake atleast it's only effecting your test:)

Impressive:) Machines here take around 40 - 50 seconds on Win7..

Maybe give GPP a try. I like it lots and find it very easy to setup and manage.

How are you deploying your printers? I've started to use GPP for deploying printers and there's an option to set the printer as default, also you can set targeting rules so only specific people get specific printers ( such as office printers )

Here's a copy of the adm file I use to set the keyboard to UK layout Keyboard.txt Change the file extension from .txt to .adm and then follow the step 1-11 instructions on the link Witch posted. One of the articles I read regarding Windows 8 was the new improved way to speed up boot times. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/08/delivering-fast-boot-times-in-windows-8.aspx I installed the Windows 8 preview and I must say I was rather impressed with the boot time. To get to the login screen from power off it took me 7 seconds on a VM (No fancy SSD) hopefully the final release is as fast as this. What’s your boot up times?

Could you 1) Set up a redirection desktop and deny permissions to write files to it? 2) Set up a software restriction policy in GP that denys .exe from running from the locations you specify 3) If you use Symantec AV (Others can probably do it as well) you can set that to disallow programs from running.

Not sure. On my computers that dont get these options at the login screen none of the settings from here are set and from when I had a look earlier there wasnt a setting to disable sleep/hibernate ( just settings like what action to perform when close lid, press power button etc. )

Why not remove the proxy from the default domain policy and have it applied on students and the ones that need a different proxy set their gpo to reflect this.

Thanks:) It seems fairly easy to use even for my sister. It's set so the drop box folder is in her documents and I've told her to save all important files that she wouldn’t want to lose into that folder. And she already has around an extra 2 GB of storage from inviting her friends^^

These look good as well. I think for the start I’ll set up drop box and see how it goes. If she does need massive amounts of storage space then we can look at purchasing one of the products you suggested. I will set drop box up on her laptop to sync the entire documents folder and tell if she has any non-important items, such as music etc. to put them in different locations. That’s not so bad. If she invites all the family and her friends she can quite easily get more space. I'm going to download it now and take a look. Anyone know how reliable and how easy it is to use?
