We still use an OMR reader here to input attendance data from the SIMS registration sheets. Ours recently packed up and we got a replacement. Otherwise I could have had yours.

We are just rolling out Parent Porrtal which is Uniservity's Parent solution for the Learning Platform. I must say its taken us some time to get used to the groups and permissions in the platform but we are at a stae now where its all starting to make sense. Still some parts are a bit long winded for our liking.

We have handed laptops away before and never erased the contents of the computers before. Why you ask? 1. Staff and pupils are not allowed to save to the hard disks of the computers. 2. Whoever takes the computers from us is expected to install their own copy of Windows onto the computer. 3. we dont have time to go erasing all the computers. Sorry fi that seems lazy but thats true.

RM are almost finished testing their software on server 2008. Im building my computers to Windows 7 this summer as part of CC4 SR2 whcih is being releaseed free to all schools. Any computers that have Vista/XP Assurance licenses are licensed for Windows 7.

Unless you are familiar with Access you wil be better sticking with Excel. I would take time to learn access thoguh as its exactly what you need. You can add tick boxes, list boxes and create reports that filter your information differently. It sounds like you only need once tabel though. Just one big long list of information. So I would stick with Excel if you jusdt want to sort and filter your columns. Youc an do this from the Data menu.

I believe the reason this is not workign is because the screensaver set for the logon screen is overriding your registry fragment. Ensure that the screensaver option for the logon screen is not applied in Type Manager before setting your own fragment.

Hi Charles, I'm 25 and have been a network manager for 2 years. CC4 is the way to go if you are on a network manager. It supports XP/Vista and Windows 7. It will take time to upgrade but XP wont be around forever so you must plan to upgrade the network soon. Maybe some of the workstations have upgrade licenses already - check with RM. CC4 has been around a long time and the major bugs have been ironed out. The tools that come with it will be very useful to you as well in running the network. Also I woulc think very carefully about going completely wireless. Laptops are more vulnerable than desktops. They can get moved, knocked off stolen etc much more easily. Also if they belong to a teacher and they are off sick or leave it at home what happens then? No interactive whiteboard??? Make sure you read and update all ICT policies. You will get an overview of what needs doing. Get ideas from the supprt comapnies on how to manage software and licenses, backups and passwords, user acounts, shared areas, filtering and e-mails. CC4 has its own Active Directory. The CC4 directory synchronises regularly with the Microsoft one. They explained this in detail at the CC4 training course. I would ask RM first before making any changes in case you screw up the directory synchronisation.

Our LEA strongly advises that all user created reports are exported in case the upgrade corrupts them. Normally re-importing a report resolves the issue.

This is happening to us too. It works for administrator users which suggests to me that it might be a permissions issue. Ive tweaked some settings in our RM Management Console with no success. In the end I supervised our deputy head whilst he printed them off the website with my user account.

I know there is no easy solution to this but Im trying to research into how other schools handle accounts and details between their systems. At the moment we have an email system with usernames in surname first intial format TILLJ009 and we have been able to kep this username convention for our school RM network logins. But this september we have getting a VLP/VLE from Uniservity which when linked in with SIMS.net will insist in its own set of username convention. The best I have found is JTILLMAN07 or maybe just JTILLMAN. The problem comes when I want to update the users for all three systems (staff and pupils). How do you manage user accounts between systems? Is there a recommended process? I knwo it depends on the different types of software. I cant see how to keep the passwords the same either. Its a primary school hre and when children change their passwords its gonna mean that each system will have a different password. Staff wont know which password is in use either. And know we cant have the same username for the email system as we could potentially have for the netwok and VLP.

If I was in your shoes I would do the following: 1. RM provide a server helathcheck service. Id phone up and ask about it. They can remote into your server using http://www.logmein123.com and take a look at the server settings and check that everything is as it should be. 2. Id be tempted to revert all users back to the default staff and student user types and revert the stations back to the standard security types too. These are types that have a padlock icon next to them in the console. Maybe just do this for a room or a small group of users. If all the software seems to be working okay then roll the rest back and go from there. 3. Try and find out what software is used and where and how its installed at the server (package/VCD)? Deallocate and delete anything thats not used or is faulty. 4. Roam through your users, enforce stronger passwords if you can and check group memberships. Eradicate shared accounts. Its best if everyone has a personal logon.

Hi there, The default office templates are stored in X:\Group Resources\Application Data. Im sure you edit Normal.dot to here and then change a setting in type manager in the RMMC to reflect this. There should be a knowlegebase article on the RM website explaining how to change the templates.

With regards to Niggle 9 if you ahve standard users and standard workstation security then exes should be blocked. If children are installing software then there has to be a loophole somewhere. What path rules are set up in the Managent Console? If the previous person lifted the security on loads of folder then thats how users are running the installs.

Outpost are you using the RM features/tools wherever possible to apply settings? If you start adding vanilla stuff into the network you may be damaging or conflicting with the RM software/settings, thus creating problems for yourself.

Everythign has been running fine here since 2004. We are CC3 with 150 workstations and two servers. The key to a good network is keping the servers updated and good package creation and documentation of all the settings made. Only had a few glitches and there has always ben a good explanation. On the whole I have found the software to be very good and the technical support to a very high standard. The big advantage for the school is if I leave, RM can take over the running of the network to the next person who takes over. If this was a vanilla network I would take my knowlege with me and anyone taking over woudl have to be very skilled and would have no support from RM to keep the netwokr ticking over with their software whilst trying to unravel and understand the underlying workings of the system. I made myself a nice little spreadsheet with the software in alphabetical order and columns for the type of license (free, site License, concurrent user license etc) then columns for each area of the school with ticks for if the software is installed there. I then had a visual overview of the school and could work out where I could install the software without exceeding the licenses I had. Tips: 1. Check the CD insert sleeves and associated resources books that came with the software 2. Survey the staff and uninstall software that is outdated and never used 3. Contact your main software comanies for lisenses they can fax post out to you. 4. Check with the bursar to search the finance system (invoices often contain licenses) Anything left that couldnt be accounted for was uninstalled and the staff were told that it was tough. If its not legal it comes off!

If the file already comes as an MSI try creating the folder structure for it in the applications directory. See how the other packages are nested. Q:\Applications L Program Name L V1.0.0.0 L Program Name L Shortcuts You dont need to create a package for a program if its already an MSI. Just insert the MSI and ini file in the folder update the package list and test the application on a workstation.

Im a netwokr manager on my own in the primary school. I work 44 weeks a year and 35 hours a week. We have A RM CC3 Server and a SIMS member server, 140workstations/laptops, 25 IWBs/Projectors and an assortment of equipment.

Hi Richmond we had the same trouble here. Turns out we managed to fix it by changing the access points signal strength down to about 50% Some of them were on different channels but still overlapping.

Hi Michelle, there are three ways to make packages If the program will run from the workstations hard disk you will need to make an MSI Package. If the program will run from a CD you will need to make a Virtual CD ROM. If the program will run from a CD ROM and from the hard disk at the same time you will need to make a Virtual CD ROM, and then make the package from the inserted virtual CD (NOT the real CD). This links the MSI and VCD together. I have been on the course and made some notes in Word that I can email to you if you like. [email protected]
