Simulation Games for Primary School
ReverentCreature replied to ReverentCreature's topic in Educational Software
Thanks but again this is controlling or moving rides and aircraft and we already have stuff like that. It needs to be a game where the children are hiring cleaners, keeping customers happy, spending their money wisely, and so on... or if its city building, putting water in, managing traffic, controlling taxes, and so on... -
We are looking for new simulation games for our school to teach children how computers simulate real life scenarios. We need some new games along the lines of Theme Hospital (where you manage staff/money/patients), Pharoah (where you manage citizens/buildings/crime) or Beach Life (where you manage customers/refreshments/staff/money). The trouble is a lot of the games out there are too old now for Windows 7 64bit. Some of them are not about managing staff or money either. We dont want to buy a simulation game thats about following a story, controlling a ship or caring for a pet!

Thanks for your replies. We are an RM school here (CC4) so Im not sure hoe compatible these products will be. I dont thin Groupm Policy settings will be enough to allow our authorised/bought keys but block all others. Im also not sure if McAfee Port Control and Sophos will work well with our Symantec RM Virus Protect 5.

Hi all. I have a server that wont start up. It goes into recovery mose and then says that Windows could not repair the issue. The error details say corrupt registry. We dotn have any restore images to recover from. I did try opening the command prompt and typing in sfc.exe /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=D:\windows but this gave the error that Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation. I then considered that maybe I could restore the system state. We had been backing up work to memory stick and full system state backups to a nearby workstation. I copied the backup to an external hard drive. which appeared as (J when I booted into recovery mode from the Server 2008 R2 DVD. The backup doesnt show in the list but the icon does show in My Computer when I browse for drivers (not that the USB hard drive came with any). I tried wbadmin start systemstaterecovery version:10/30/2012 02:50 -backupTarget:J:\ but that commend didnt work. it said the version was wrong. Yet this is the date and time that shows in the date modified column for the backup files. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Or just goign round in circles? Thanks. PS: I have seen some suggested solutions for both of the above issues but they generally require you to be in Windows. As we cannot seven boot up into Safe Mode we are limited for choices.

Our school is currently having issues with SchoolComms Currently if we send out a newsletter to ALL PARENTS, the hard copy report lists every parent that needs contacting! If the father has been e-mailed, why would we need to send a hard copy to the mother??? Alternatively if send out a newsletter just to the PRIME PARENT, we are preventing ourselves from e-mailing those who are not prime parents. Either way we are having to photocopy hundreds of newsletters! Parents have given us their e-mail addresses so we DONT send them hard copies any more! SchoolComms say this is by design and cant be changed any time soon so we are looking for an alternative product that will only e-mail ONE OF THE PARENTS and wont request hard copies if one of the parents has been contacted. We will go paperless if it kills us! What do your schools use? We have looked at ParentMail but it doesnt integrate with SIMS which is what we want now that we have inputted all their details. Thanks

Hi all. Ive been asked to give new teachers th activation details for Smart Notebook software so teachers can download the program from the support site and install it on their home computers. Does anyone know if this is allowed or not. I believe we are licensed to do so but I just want to check what other schools have done before I go assuming its okay to do? Thanks

Sharepoint homepage intranet design

Hi Hadros. This can be achieved yes if you are an Assessment Manager in SIMS.net as you will have access to the templates that the marksheets have been created in. Each level you have entered will have an underlying gradeset and a point score for it. As Ian has already explained create a VALUE (formula review)column that displays the number for the level entered. Then create a PLUS (formula review) column that can add on the amount (e.g. 4 points) that you need. The last column you need is a MARKS TO GRADE (formula entry) one that takes the PLUS column and turns it back into a level. Formula review columns make calculations but dont store them anywhere. Formula entry columns save the result against the pupil so its important to add in any result sets if they are needed.

Ive got Remote Desktop Services set up! At least it works via https://tsk-sr-001.tillskills.local/rdweb from inside the LAN but not from elsewhere on the Internet. I just get page cannot be displayed and suchlike instead! I think Ive successfully added TCP 3389 and 443 to the BT Router. I can see what I think is the servers public IP 86.149.1.141 and I can ping that from my home pc. So do I need to buy a domain for this to work? I mean how do I know that tsk-sr-001.tillskills.local doesnt exist elsewhere on the Internet?

Best use of space in Small ICT suite
ReverentCreature replied to Little-Miss's topic in How do you do....it?
If you do have corners with wastes space this is the ideal place to put printers. You dont need to sit at a printer after all! There is no reason why a printer needs to be in the computer suite really. Maybe if children do need their work on paper as evidence they could print to the printer/photocopier outside in the corridor? Built in cupboards could be useful for any resources such as headphones. Maybe overhead shelving could sort this stuff too. If all in one computers still take up too much space, consider tabledt computers with USB docking stations for the network lead, keyboard and mouse. The "RM Slates" have these. -
Opening other peoples mail? Thats against the law!

cc4 user policies
ReverentCreature replied to mrtechnician's topic in Network and Classroom Management
If you can track down a registry fragment you can add it to the registry policy for the users. -

RM cut Vista support on CC4
ReverentCreature replied to sparkeh's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Anyone who has purchased licenses in the last year and have Vista can switch to Windows 7 without putchasing any new licenses. Just phone up RM for more details. We found that we could switch from Vista to Windows 7 for free. -
I think you'll be very suprised. Windows 7 is streamlined, does not require high specification computer and runs on some of our oldest computers quite well. All we needed was some RAM. In fact some computers booted up quicker when when they were XP! Have a tinker around with one to get the right drivers and you'll be sorted.

I think what you're after is similar to a Development plan i think. Basically youll want a paragraph giving an overview of where you are with ICT for admin and curriculum and what you plan to implement over the next few years. e.g Video Conferencing/wireless laptops/digital cameras for each class. Then have a tableeach row should be something you want to do (e.g. set up a video conferencing system" and in each column (academic year) what you are going to do or buy. Include columns also for cost and who is responsible/involved/monitoring this aim. We also include success criteria. e.g. "classes are able to book out and use the video conferencing equipment for their lessons".

How amny printers do you have in school
ReverentCreature replied to rckngslnd's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I have wittled down the number of printers that we have here. We have: 4 networked corridor printers serving 20 classrooms. 3 in the office area 5 printers in 5 offices locally installed 3 printers in other areas 15 printers for a school with 450 children and 50 staff. -
Hi there, We have three lots of CC4 laptops here. How much software are you trickle feeding? Do you have a backlog of tasks to complete? When we moved to CC4 I made the mistake of building the whole network to package build and then assiging all software to the locations and then moving stations into those locations. It was too much work for the network. Wake on LAN only works on wired computers not wireless. You may need to take some laptops away, plug them in to a netwokr socket somewhere and make sure that the software on them is up-to-date and they connect and log on and off without issues. If you are having problems then you need to check for issues on your server. If you are having connectivity issues then your wireless setup needs looking at. Trickle feed kicks in when computers have idle time. Thefore the allocation of packages (update or software) will not affect logon times, or the mapping of drives and printers. Do you knwo if packages are actually installing? Try cancelling outstanding tasks and try just assiging one package to one computer where you know there are no tasks going on. Does the tick go from grey to green in the assignment overview after a minute or so?

ReverentCreature replied to synaesthesia's topic in Network and Classroom Management
We are using Symantec System Centre console 10.1.6 on our server. Cant seem to find where the quarantine is! How do we restore the file and add in an exclusion? Im not finding the right articles in the programs help feature. Thanks
