Just installed a new WSUS system and have it set to auto approval, but when I look at the WSUS console at 'All Updates' and select unapproved it lists the Windows Malicious Tool as unapproved for August, September, October & November 2014. Why are these not getting the auto approval treatment?

Thanks for all your help. When I go to delete the server from DNS 'Name Servers' list, it is asking if I want to delete the glue record. Should I do this?

In addition to my last post above theserver that does not have DNS etc but is listed as a 'Name Server' is also listed in AD sites and services as a server, but it does not have any NTDS settings associated with it like the other servers do. Should I remove it from this also?

OK done that. I have one last issue. I have another server which is running hyper-V, remote access gateway, IIS and WSUS but this server is listed as a 'Name Server' on our main DC within DNS although it is not a DC and does not have DNS roles etc. It is also not listed in the Domain controllers OU. Am I right to assume that a name server would be running DNS? If so could it be that this server was once a DC and has been demoted in the paste or possible given the same name as an old DC. Should I remove this from DNS 'Name Servers' list?

Just wondered if you schools use the 2-step verification with Staff accounts on GAFE? and if so, how has it been? Thanks

Found a really old server listed in AD that has been disabled but get the following question when trying to delete. It then goes on about subtree deletion and gives me a tick box with the option to delete the subtree server control. Am I OK to delete the subtree?

Last week I completed a migration from SQL2008r2 to SQL2012 using the Capita migration tool. The info has the following to be completed after the migration. I have stopped the SQL server (2008r2) service but wondered what it means by uninstall the instance? Do they mean uninstall SQL 2008r2? if so which of the many SQL 2008r2 files is used to uninstall, as 'uninstall programs' lists a few different items.

I am wanting to clean DNS as I have found some really old servers listed.

An alternative is to add multiple accounts to chrome, you then get each account listed in the top left of chrome and clicking that will open a new browser that is logged on to that account. I look after lots of primary schools that use GAFE and I use this method to manage each of the schools

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the WSUS updates to be stored on a USB drive if it is attached to the server. I do not have a massive amount of space on the main server.

Thanks for all the ideas. I have managed to find just about enough space on the server to create a new VM while leaving the old one switched off. Any advice about removing the old DC from my main DC. Is it just a case of going into AD, DHCP etc and deleting any references to the old DC or is their a specific method.

It is only a dc with GC. The other DC has all the FSMO roles and is also a GC. Yes, the one that has paused is my 'backup dc' and is a vm.

I have always had a WSUS server in the primary school but that is not an option for the moment as the old second server went pop. I could probably find some old pc and get WSUS installed but wondered what other primary schools do for windows updates. Do you have a WSUS server or simply use the default MS updates?

I have just noticed my second DC which is a virtual server had become paused. Looking into the issue it's because the drive the vm was on get full. Anyway I have the space back and am aware that un-pausing would not be a good option in the same way that snapshots are a no no for a DC. It looks like the pause has been on for almost a Month so what I have done is powered off the VM. Do you think I will be OK to now turn this DC server VM back on? I had something similar happen once before and turning on worked fine but it was only paused for a few days. What are everyone's thought about powering on this VM.

About 6 Months back we had an issue where we lost our SQL server and after it was re-built and the Sims / fms databases were restored it turned out that the backups did not contain the users or their passwords, this included my main sims and fms 'God' accounts. We were basically stuffed for a while, but it did get sorted. To make sure we do not get in an issue like before, I will be running very frequent test restores. I have a test server with SQL installed along with sims and fms and a few weeks ago I restored both the sims and fms databases on to this test server and all was OK. I want to test the Sims and FMS backups again but have realised that if I detach a database from my test server it does not delete the users / passwords from SQL server for the sims or fms users, it just seems to delete the databases, and as a result I am not able to test another restore to see if the backups do contain the usernames and passwords. Does that make sense? Would selecting 'Drop SQLserver Logins' achieve what I would call a 'FULL' database removal? Any ideas how I might be able to achieve this? EDIT: I could use a VM to do the testing and restore a snapshot, but do not really want to go back through the process of installing everything again if I can help it.

I think so, I was advised to open sql server config manager and find / enable tcp/ip and named pipes, which I have done. Could it be that the SQL Browser service is loged in as a local service but all the other SQL services are logged in as local system?? - - - Updated - - - Yes, same server

I have just completed a migration from SQL2008 (FULL) to SQL2012(Express) using the CAPITA migration tool. I have tested Sims and FMS on the server and all works OK but when I try to login into Sims (Not tried FMS) from a client I get a login error reason 0. All was OK from the clients prior to the migration. I have checked the connect.ini file in C......Sims which has a redirect to S:\Sims and the actual connect.ini file in S:\Sims has server\sql2012 Please help.
