A lot of schools / colleges want / need more IT support than they can afford.. so canvas schools in your area with a nice letter setting out your experience and desire to learn and offer to assist them with any projects they may have.. The only downside is, that most schools will find it difficult to take you on, even temporarily, during termtime as most require CRB checks to be complete first.. You should be able to secure work experience (paid even!) at Easter and in the summer.. Good luck..

Run the Dell Diagnostics for this model: - if it is hardware this may pinpoint the problem.. Drivers and Downloads

Shouldn't be too much of a problem to setup that number of machines fairly quickly - though it's easier during the hols - when there are fewer distractions/demands.. 1.. IT Tech (or temp if we have a lot to do) unboxes, places kit on desks, labels, cables and sets machines to PXE - creating a spreadsheet of MAC addresses vs machine names for me.. (and disposes of the waste cartons) 2.. using spreadsheet -machines are pre-staged in AD 3.. switch on all the machines - go home.. 4.. next morning check the machines have built and all the applications have installed.. job done! of course to get to this stage we have invested a lot of time and a bit of money in creation of machine and application images. If your Head hasn't given you the time/money/resources/training to do this sort of thing - then he/she is being unreasonable to expect things to happen so fast.. We use Specops Deploy - but equally you can do the same with Altiris or several other commercial deployment tools - or even invest time in learning WDS and it's mysteries.. I'm always happy to share and if anyone wants to see how our system works and can get to Oxford - pm me..

my understanding is - that it can import .flp files - but they then need to be re-formatted as a lot of this is lost in the import process.. so probably best stick to promethean (or smart boards with promethean software) if you really want to open .flp or flipchart files..

you could always try to install the policykit sudo apt-get install policykit but I'm with powdarrmonkey on this - find a local Linux guru to take a looksee..

I've installed webmin on the ubuntu server that hosts our moodle - managing the server via a web browser is great..

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Here's a clearer answer: Smart Notebook 10 can import .flp files but not .flipchart. The new notebook file will be reformatted and so may lose it's interactiveness. But it is a starting point.. You may be able to test how this will work by using the free Smart Notebook Viewer I mentioned above.. Alternatively - buy the licence for ActiveInspire and use it on the Smart Board - but then not all of the Smart functions may work with that software.. Hope that helps..
-
you don't need a smartboard to run the viewer software..

Why not download the free Smart Board Notebook Interactive Viewer and see if it can handle your files - this is a cut-down version of Smart Notebook so if it works with this? SMART Notebook Interactive Viewer for Windows - SMART Technologies

Possibly a build quality issue - big brand PC's are assembled in 'clean' environments, often by machines. The danger of contamination from dust, finger grease, static shock etc. is minimised. Joe Bloggs PC assembler may well use good components and take reasonable care while bolting PCs together in his garage/workshop/kitchen - but it's just not the same! Go back to the PC Assembler and ask them to sort it if - failing that blow the dust out and run degreaser on the memory / processor / battery contacts - (give them a good spray with Aero Klene 50 or similar) I know it's too late now - but I that's why I tend to buy Dell with 3yr warranties - any problems in that time (rare) - they send an engineer next day, swap the components and it's fixed..

You are right - no point trying to reinvent the wheel when others have made plenty of mistakes you can learn from: If you fancy a trip to Oxford you would be most welcome - We have spent the past couple of years bringing our systems up to date - W7 desktops, Server2008 - VmWare - some thin clients.. remote app and OS deployment etc.. PM me if you fancy a day out..

we use Collect2Save very easy - they supply collection boxes, I drop our account manager an email when it's full and they collect next day.. we can have a cheque or nominate a charity.. They also sell remanufactured carts - the quality is quite good..

Hi Martin.. We found we could just do a manual install - or it can even be done quietly SIMSApplicationSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {NoServerApps} [sIMSDotNetDirectory]="%PROGRAMFILES%\SIMS\SIMS.net" Then copy a good SIMS.ini to the windows folder Then if you think you need it do the SIMSPerm stuff.. Bloxx - media filter + web filter
carvjo replied to mrbios's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We have two sites - one with a TVT-250 and the main site with a TVT-1250. These boxes work really well: easy to setup, manage and use - and when we do get an issue BLOXX support is excellent. We have just done a hardware refresh - our kit was 2 years old - but they did a cracking deal that was too good to pass up. -

Problem pushing printers to XP Machines
carvjo replied to globalbrain's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
I know you said you had them - but check you have the right KB Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for Windows XP (KB943729) With that installed it should work.. -
Problem pushing printers to XP Machines
carvjo replied to globalbrain's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Strangely - our XP machines pick up the GPPs reliably - but the Windows 7 don't always.. GPO's are a black art and I may need to sacrifice a farmyard animal! -
Problem pushing printers to XP Machines
carvjo replied to globalbrain's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
OK - this is what I've done and it seems to work.. in GMPC - User Configuration - Preferences - Control Panel Settings - Printers Right Click - New Shared Printer On the General Tab I have Action: Update Shared Path: \\print-server-name\printer-share-name On the Common Tab Item Level Targeting is Ticked - then click the Targeting button and select the OU.. I did a GP update on an XP machine in that OU and - the printer was attached.. Hope that helps.. -
A bit of a long story - sorry - I will get to the point but some history may help.. We are running Moodle 1.98 on an Ubuntu server.. this ran out of space so I moved the moodledata folder to another server and mounted the share - I entered the path to that in the config.php Afeter that move - the sessions weren't working right and any attempted login gave the 'cookies must be enabled' warning and failed.. I checked permissions and gave 777 on the sessions folder, but no luck! In the moodle config.php - I added the line $CFG->respectsessionsettings = true; and users could again login.. unfortunately when users attempt to open a Word document (but not PDF) from within the moodle site they get a popup 'Windows Security' asking for credentials, if this is cancelled, the document opens.. I did manage to stop that happening by adding the line $CFG->usesid = true; as the last line of config.php before the ?> However that introduced another error that going to the moodle.oursite.org logon page gives a 500 Server error - but the site is visible after a reload/refresh.. Any suggestions how I may get rid of the annoying windows security popup? Many thanks..

Windows 7 - New Domain - New User - temporary profile?
carvjo replied to hotwired007's topic in Windows 7
Create a profile: \\domain controller servername\NETLOGON\Default User.v2 (tip: download Windows Enabler - run this as an administrator and it 'un-greys' the option to copy a local profile) Now when a domain user logs on to your domain - if they don't have a local cached profile, a roaming profile or mandatory profile - they will use the profile settings in the default user profile you created.. Just a thought - are you specifying a profile/path in the user account properties? If you are happy with the settings in your 'default user.v2' profile - make a copy of it and call it something useful like student.v2 or staff.v2 - rename the hidden file ntuser.dat to ntuser.man - and specify the profile path in your user accounts to: %logonserver%\NETLOGON\student (or staff or whatever) Mandatory profiles - nice!
