We use Specops Deploy - it is really good.. We bought it to do our W7 migration last summer.. The OS Deploy just works (uses lots of WDS bits but simplifies things..) - I can right click on a single computer or an entire OU and chose to change these to W7 or re-install OS.. the machines reboot a few times and come back up with all the right apps installed - all correctly names, joined to the domain.. just how it should be! The App deployment uses GPOs - but again simplifies everything and adds quite a few bells and whistles - allowing easy deployment of legacy exe installers.. Mint is an Ubuntu derived OS - but with more things like video/audio codecs - you can always boot from a live CD and see if your stuff will run before going the whole hog and wiping your machine..

Glad you got it sorted.. The latest streamtransport does work with iplayer though.. bit of a fiddle running the flv's created through QMC to get s sensible format - but it works..

StreamTransport - Hulu downloader/ Youtube downloader/ FLV downloader helps download hulu TV shows/ record hulu movies/ capture hulu videos. - if it plays on OK the screen - this seems capaple of catching video content..

Not entirely relevent, but good background reading: Becta’s School Management Information Systems and Value for Money report - it's a few years old, but still interesting. I believe this report led to a complaint (by an MIS vendor) which is still pending investgation with the OFT regarding the dominance of one MIS product which may have led to schools overpaying.. ..good luck and I hope some schools using the products you mention will share useful feedback here..

Commuting is hell.. I do the return trip - Kettering - Oxford daily... I leave the house at 5:15am (otherwise the traffic would add another hour to my journey) and get home whenever.. The daily 130 mile round trip will probably cost me close to £4000 per year in fuel, car repairs, depreciation etc.. I did consider the options before I accepted the job, but this school were keen to have me and offered some assistance for 6 month or so until I got settled, after which I did try renting - but the housing market isn't favourable to renters and I couldn't sell in Kettering, so now I have to commute, or spend the week away from home.. Though I love my work but If I had known the commute would be such a bind - I would have stayed at my previous job and not taken this one.. Think carefully, if working in IT means that much to you that you can accept you will be financially worse off and tired all the time from commuting.. then go for it..

Turn on Verbose Logon - so you can see what it is doing 1. Open regedit and goto: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\System 2. In right-side pane create/modify DWORD value VerboseStatus and set its value to: 0 - To Disable Verbose Status Message 1 - To Enable Verbose Status Message - it is probably doing something with GPOs - like loading printers or similar.. but this should give a clue..

Pity - I can't make that - I have a suggestion for a speaker though.. I recently attended an ISC Conference where Ian Yorston spoke.. (He is the Head of Digital Strategy at Radley College) He is an excellent and entertaining speaker who made some very good arguments about why schools should scrap teachers and computer networks - give students iPads and tell them to do find some interesting things to do..

iScsi is fine - that's what we use - the iSCSI traffic all runs on it's own vLan and performance is pretty good..

We have a Blade Centre with a number of Blade Servers for the processing and a SAN for the storage.. We've got IBM kit because it met our needs/price and there is room to grow - we use VMWare VSphere.. I can't say I know the nuts and bolts of it all - I try to keep my hand in, but spend far too much time pushing paper and smoothing troubled waters (I would be in trouble if our NM ever decided to leave!)

RDP7 - and ease of use.. We have a farm of 4 x RDServers (Terminal Servers in old money) - all running as VM's - 2X does the load balancing and clever stuff like assigning machine images to hardware types.. There are other options though - whatever you are comfortable with and can afford..

We have some 2X - if money had been no object, I would have bought Citrix - but I didn't have the budget.. Having said that, 2X works fine and is getting better all the time.. there are some new clients now (still in the beta downloads, I think) that incorporate RDP7 - though still not ICA/HDX it is quite acceptable for graphics speed.. Nice mid-range Thinstation client boxes are better than re-purposed PCs as they can load the later/beta RDP7 2X clients..

Hi James - It looks like ESET provide an uninstaller for Sophos http://www.eset.co.uk/Download/UnInstallers I've done a similar exercise with another AV product and it was possible to add the uninstaller (for the old product) to the deployment of the new one.. I am sure ESET support will be able to point you in the direction of some way to deploy a site-wide rollout including the uninstall of Sophos. John

We saw this problem too.. same resolution I posted to another thread ref. cleaning up profiles.. If you make your students members of the 'Domain Guests' global group - their profile won't be stored on the local machine any more.. You will have to cleanup the profiles already on the computers - as it does nothing to get rid of those already there..

Add your users to the 'Domain Guests' global group - those users won't leave any profile on your computers.. it works!

I created a LinkedIn profile as I was told it was worthwhile while job hunting.. Perhaps I didn't use it right - I didn't see any benefit.. I deleted my profile when one of the SMT here asked to be a contact.. ..sorry but I just don't see the point of LinkedIn..
