Here are the capacity planning documents in technet: Terminal Server Capacity Planning: Terminal Services Client (Remote Desktop) Remote Desktop Services is the latest incarnation of Terminal Services - and said to be a bit more efficient. We are putting in a load-balanced farm of 4 x 2008R2 servers (virtualised accross two good-spec hosts in our blade centre - each with 64Gb RAM and dual 6xcore processors) to cope with 200 connections - therefore we are looking at a density of 50 connections per server. This is probably an overkill - but we will find out when it goes live?

WPKGExpress adds a web frontend to WPKG - it does work - I found the setup was surprisingly straightforward, if a little daunting due to the lack of documentation.. I have bought Prism Deploy Packager (which is the packaing technology part of the prism deployment suite) - this is remarkable value, if bought on its own, and creates nice install packages that never ask for elevation on Windows 7 and most packages, though created on XP, still work on Win 7 - WPKG has no problem deploying these. WPKG/WPKGExpress is a bit of a monster to manage the groups, packages etc. if you have a lot of kit, and doesn't provide a lot of feedback on success of installations.. I am currently trialling Specops Deploy - which could be described as the Windows Equiv. of WPKGExpress. Due to the nice integration with AD it will certainly save time and effort, provides feedback on success, failures etc.. It adds the ability to deploy .exe files (inc. those generated by Prism Packager) to GPOs - and much more.. (including a wrapper to simplify MDT for OS deployment - still playing with that!) John

Our WEEE waste is collected free by SafePC Disposal of Abingdon - I get waste collection notices and disposal certificates. Safe PC Disposal It would be interesting to know how e-waste is treated when we send it for recycling.. Greenpeace say that it costs US$20 to recycle a computer in Europe or the US, but only US$2 in India - which is why many of the computers we send for legit WEEE disposal ends up in 3rd world countries.. Safe PC disposal say they aren't an exporter of waste and operate a re-marketing operation withn the UK.

..I was offered Altiris at about £4.50 per desktop - this was an upgrade price as we have Symantec Solution Suite.. I did tell them that I only paid £25 for the Solution Suite media and have no licensed workstations - but it made no difference - the salesman from Codework wanted to make a sale and said I could have upgrade pricing.. I think I would go for Specops Deploy if I could get it at the right price as our work on MDT and the creation of installation packets with Prism Deploy Packer (for deployment with WpkgExpress) would still hold good.. Alan at Specops UK didn't seem to think there was a lot of room for movement on price though..

I took a look at the website - it looks great - asked for prices (out of curiosity, though if the price was right?) - even with educational discount at around £13 per desktop it isn't cheap and around four times the price I was offered on Altiris.. I think it will have to be MDT2010 and WpkgExpress this year..

Yes - Win 7 PC's can be cloned with Ghost - I've no idea whether it does the same as XP - but Ghostwalker also runs and seems to finish on Win 7.. We tested with Ghost Solutions Suite 2.5 - running the live update sorted Ghost for Win 7.. We have decided to go down the MDT2010 route though.. this is free and seems to work very well.. Plan for our summer rollout: Build machines with MDT - Base image Win 7 + MS Office - then deploy applications with WPKG/WPKGExpress.. simple! (in theory) Good luck with yours..!

Hi To get around the problem - run the logon/logoff exe as a scheduled task - Below is a command line that I use to create schtasks for WPKG on Windows7 machines - there are options available for on logon - or on user session connection and user session end schtasks /create /tn wpkg /rl highest /tr "\\SERVER\storage\wpkg-start.bat" /sc onstart /ru domain\user /rp password The key to getting it to work is the "highest" option - which does the elevation bit.. alternatively create the tak in the GUI - by typing task in the Start-Search dialogue and following the steps.. I've been offered a cracking deal on Altiris Deployment Solution - we have been using Ghost for our XP rollouts but only the server side and pulled down images - this doesn't work with Windows 7.. Altiris is probably an overkill - but I would welcome comments from anyone who is using it and can tell me if it is worth the effort? Many thanks John
