Is there any way of getting openOffice to save to a sharepoint document library simalarly to Office 2007? Wes

Is it possible to disable the first time user registration for open office 3? If any one has accomplished this, then any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all... I know i know, Open Office Yuk!! Recently we upgraded all machines from Open Office 2.0 to Open Office 3.0. We have a shared folder which is mapped to S drive. In this shared folder there are lots of open office documents, ods files. Before, when a user already has a shared file open, for example test.ods, the second user tring to access the file would get a "Document in Use" error and it would say "Document test.ods is locked for editing by: " then they would have the option to open a read only copy. The Open Office Documents have now lost this "Document in Use". Now when a user opens a second copy of the file and saves it, it wipes all previous versions. I am not sure if upgrading to Open Office 3 caused this problem because we have users in another branch, on another domain, using open office 2 and they seem to be having the same problem. (again, this has only happened recently) I have tried enabling and disabling the Sharing under Tools > Share Document which is described here but it hasn't helped. All users have read write and modify permissions. Oh, The shared drive is on a Bufflow Linkstation but I do not think this is the source of the problem as the other branch's shared folder are shared by server 2003. Thanks Fraser

I was quite pleased recently when I realised that OpenOffice can now open ".docx" files, although I expect I'm a little behind the times. I've never been completely sure of the value of using the new ".docx" format, I'm sure there must be some reason for it... but anyway, I'm finding that unless the document is just text, that OpenOffice 3 can still open it but really messes up the formatting. It all seems a bit pointless. Some files I open show as blank pages it's that bad! But my friend from work informs me that "docx" is meant to be open source. Not sure I quite believe it, has anyone else heard this, and if it's true why do you think open office handles the files so badly? Am I doing something wrong?

Anyone on here using Open Office instead of MS Office, particularly in secondary? Or using both? Any implications regarding the ICT courses?

Hi Folks I thought I'd mention this one here because it's only just gone v1.0 and I couldn't find anything about it on the foums when I was investigating it. The people at OpenOffice.org have released a version of OO with a cut down UI specially for the 7-12 age range, and taken steps with both teaching and technical staff to make it easily deployable and child friendly. Working in several primaries I've found Open Office to be okay with the Juniors but often a bit much for infants, so this simplified build is well received. The suite includes versions of Calc, Draw, Impress, Math and Writer and the project appears to be a well structured and considerably mature offering given it's young age. Have a look and decide for yourselves OOo4Kids The installer unpacks an msi file which helps for AD GPO deployments, and the default installation drops such things like the user agreement and the registration splash familiar from the full OOo install which helps make it easier for us admins. I've had a brief look at it over the weekend and I'm satisfied with it's stability and features. I just wish there was an EN localisation, but I guess we can't have everything for free... I'm going to deploy it live to 32 fizzbooks this afternoon. The school did the usual trick of spending all their money with a local boxshifter without consultation from the experts (ie., me) and then acted all surprised when they found out Microsoft charge for Office licenses... sound familiar? I'll return with any problems etc if and when they occur. Cheers folks, and respect to the people at ooo4kids.org :-)

I have been asked to summarise the pros and cons in connection with the choices between Microsoft Office Vs OpenOffice. I have a broad idea of what needs to be said. However I would like to open a discussion here and have a single place to go to when the time comes to give the summary to SLT. There are obvious points of contention: For me the lack of compliance with Group Policy is a major concern [Default save location/visibility of C:/Visibility of files and folders on the HDD] However I am sure that functionality and compatibility will be the prime mover. We are looking at making major savings by reducing our commitment to Microsoft licensing. So what are your experiences? What happens when there are no direct equivalents? [Word has a close match in OpenOffice, but a database solution match is not as close, neither is an Outlook [connecting to Exchange Server and downloading all calendars, shared calendars, scheduled events, for Exchange will still exist after the move to OpenSource solutions] In summary then: What do you see as: The benefits of this plan? How do you see the problems being manifest? Discuss.... Many thanks.

We're running Open Office 3.3 and I've followed the instructions here for stopping the registration wizard for all users: Deactivating the OpenOffice.org Registration Wizard - OpenOffice.org Wiki But each new person logging on to the PCs gets the registration wizard! When you check in Tools / Extension Manager the DisableFirstStartWzd.oxt is there...! I'm baffled. Any suggestions? Is there an alternative way of stopping the registration wizard popping up in everyone's faces?

Howdy all , Been trying to find an easy way to set the default save formats in OO3.1 as MSOffice filetypes for all users. Found several ways of doing it on earlier versions of OO but cant seem to find anyone who has a solution for OO3.1. Anyone know of a way? Want to rollout OO3.1 this summer to run alongside MSO, but hesitant to do so without setting the default save formats.

I'm meeting a little resistance from, what I thought would be, an unlikely source. The concern is about teaching 'the industry standard' and 'falling behind what is used in business'. Our current 'standard' is Office 2000 One of the concerns is what other schools are doing in terms of M$ licensing costs and the attraction of a free office suite. So I thought I'd start a poll to see how land lays, so to speek.

I'm trying to deploy OpenOffice.org 3.0 to the curriculum network. However, I don't think the students and staff are ready for the major change. So, I'd like to keep it as a secondary alternative to Microsoft Office. Can anyone tell me how I can deploy OOo 3 with the following conditions: DO NOT make it the default handler for Microsoft Office documents. Change the default save format from Open Document format to Microsoft Office document format. (I.e. .doc .xls .ppt etc) Cancel the registration wizard on first start and/or deploy my own registration settings.

Does anyone know whether the latest version of Open Office is fully compatible with Office 2007? Last update I could find was that it could open the files but could not save as them. Anyone know any different? Thanks.

Hi, Does anyone have experience of using OpenOffice across school. We are an infant school with 200+ desktop and laptop machines and are considering moving to OpenOffice. Currently our Year 1 children use Office but our Year 2 children use Textease so we need to rationalise this with one package accross the whole school. It's going to cost us £2400 (60 x £40) to licence our 60 Year 2 laptops, hence we are considering OpenOffice. Has anyone else done this and are there any known pitfalls or problems ? Thanks in advance. Steve.

So has much as I am on record for not really liking the whole ribbon interface it looks as if I've zero choice about using it... Prototyping a New User Interface for OOo - July Status Update for Project Renaissance - GullFOSS Where M$ lead OO.o will surely follow
