[sims] SIMS Learning Gateway - Hosted Version.
kevin_lane replied to william_tropico's topic in MIS Systems
At current we use sharepoint 2010 for our VLE, and we also use SLG, which is the bit you are referring to, not sure how Capita give you the setup but, basically it depends on cost and if you have the infrastructure to support it, and not only that you are going to need some to drive it as well as this will be big change for the school you must get the staff at the back of you. which can be easily said than done, profile is part of the SLG and SIMS it allows your staff to work on their reports when they are at home you can also import your own templates aswell for this, you can get Network access however not easily and you need to install web parts but I know people on here use homeaccess+ ?? not sure if that's the correct name but I believe this can give you the access to resources on the network from home, our SharePoint DB is around 600GB so can be very large.....I think VLEs are ok but I just think they are too much of a faff, however we have to be seen to be providing the means for people to work and learn from home. and also depending on how much time you want to spend on the installation as administration can be some what of a headache. also you need sims if you don't have sims then not sure what other products you would use. -

You could try using Block inherent on a test ou and see if GP is having an effect too, if you have to the wait for network being applied then generally speaking your gpos will not be applied until the laptop has a solid connection which of course can be a pain

Ours is set to 16c however the servers are more like 21c for there internal temp

Basically your stuffed never had to do it my self but I backup DPM database as that I belive holds the everything you need in order to bring everything back but I think that's for a complete rebuild so I maybe wrong when I get to work I will double check and let you know how had you added the storage back to DPM you most probably won't have any but do you have any inactive recovery groups but from what it sounds like your up steam without a paddle

Depends on your budget really and if you really think the school would benifit from having such speeds -

my bad - created a new thread on BTRD
-
We dont use profiles for students we just redirect the desktop and logins are pretty quick
-
We use delprof2 which runs evey startup and shutdown we also combin that with a GPO policy that when a profile is over 2 days old it gets deleted

Well in regards to this DR plan I would just like to add that draytek routers are pritty good as I've not long just got back from London to setup a LAN to LAN VPN connection. Not saying that's what ppl should do as everyone is different but I think it really should be at the top of people's list. my school however hasn't had one for the past 6 years and it's taken me this long to prefect our backups and network due to budget constraints this has too long, in my opinion. however it's done now, and the next week or so I will be compiling our DR plan and be handing it to our governing body. once it's finished and competed I don't mind sharing however it will be based on my suggestion of how I think a DR should be done. however if you want to change it to your needs and how you think it should be done for your school then by all means you can

I feel the pain however mine is with sky aka BT line it really is stupid sometimes I dont even bother to go on the internet and god forbidden for me and the wife try and stream anything and working from home well thats hit and miss and yet we have a 100/100meg connection which has over 400 people going over it and its bliss I spoke to a person a vm who said that when they roll out any sort of connection that they do a survey on the area and estimate the potential income and expenditure for putting somthing in now I get that to a point however ss its already been mentioned we are now living in the age of were everything should be instantly available and why arnt we I sometimes wonder if it would be cheaper for me to run a fiber connection to my in laws
-
No I know but in regards to what witch was saying it would imply that her school would be well would not be in a good position and I think any person in charge of a network has a responsibility to produce one its just good practice however im sure she has backups hidden away some were

Thats all well and good but I wonder how smt and teaching staff would take to that not to mention the finance department which would of have to re-enter all the data for the start of the financial year
