found this the other day we have had grants from Wolfson Foundation, we have used them twice for different requirements. this time we brought 35 Mac minis and also 40 laptops for our technology I think in total across both time we have about 100K, but that don't account for all the upgrades and laptops that need replacing, as we are a large school we currently have over 1,080 devices and the amount of IT equipment that needs sorting is just wait beyond my budget. Me and my team have just been to a meeting where by a trolley worth about 5K was left out over night in our maths department last week (this isn't the first time) so being that may, I decided to remove the laptops with the help of tech and placed them in our back office.....a week has past.....thinking to my self before this week had past the surely someone would notice that the laptops had gone missing....NO.... an email came through from the said maths department and wanted to know where the laptops were. we explained what had happened and next thing we know is that we are being pull into a meeting by " head" because we have remove the resources from the department and from the pupils that needed then ( this wasn't the case and the said laptops where being used as pupil loans) and a long and lengthy debate was underway.... I would like to know if I was in the right in doing what I did and has anyone ever done the same thing at there school?

when you say no backups how literal do you mean and how far spread is this? have you manage to catch the host pc?

Hello Mac Gods we are having a problem with our Mac server we are using OS X El Capitan running we have logged a support case with apple who are helpfully going to be giving us an answer to our problems bear mind this has been going on for over 2 weeks, and our problem is somewhat closer to being sorted but i have came to edugeek to see if anyone can shed any light or have had a simaler problem, our server has a static IP address and also has a public IP address with the following ports open 2195, 2196, 5223, 443 our test mac server is enrolled with the server and we can do basic updates and what i mean by this is that we can update the name of the mac remotely and also apply restrictions on the mac as well. it is also binded to our active directory so we can logon to the mac using an AD account which is fine. but we are having problems pushing apps to the devices under the profile manager we have the vpp token applied to the server, but when i come to push the app under the active tasks nothing happens zlich its only when i push a settings update i.e change the dock size it seems to do something, my knowledge and experience with mac are somewhat being tested an is a massive learning curve atm even just looking at the logs is a mission i just feel like im looking at code i cant decipher what is actually going on so please help from an unhappy NM

yes we had this the other week only that i was crytolocker it effected our SIMS server and our Staff server, all in all we was only down a day or so thank god for veeam !!

@Alis_Klar webmin is basically a Web back end for distro you are using and allows you to manage the system settings under a gui interface rather than CLI but and also allows you to install software through it aswell among other settings that can be applied I.E samba / ldap / DNS etc webmin is quite a powerful tool

@ozydave oh i do agree with you, it makes no difference what so ever to where the servers are being held. but what i don't understand, maybe its me but in nick morgans quote about technology and the integral part of it. is that surely this MoU document must of passed by her office and or whoever was in leadership that time, hasn't made any effort in bringing this to peoples attention, for people like ourselfs. who have to some how balance a budget, and you are correct poor teachers and leadership which can lead to bad results. in some respect but, also on the flip side. if we are to provide schools and FE and other teaching establishments the required technology, to help improve these "standards" and to have some sort of a budget to ago along side this. How can we effectively make sure that we continue to drive technology forward especially if in event of higher prices that is needed as a platform to provide access to resources for people to use, we can't and yet we are being somewhat "pointed" into moving over to a cloud base system, which is fine and dandy but i don't like the idea of having my hand dealt into a situation that i feel is correct.....maybe i'm wrong who knows.

I don't agree with this statement, not sure if other people do or not but I don't see how get the fact that by making schools go cloud it's a better thing and I'm not being funny but yes it might make it easier for pupils to access resources and thats all it is just because office 365 is in the cloud doesn't mean the a number of pupils are going to get a better result or understand a peice of homework because it's in the cloud I have got this wrong I don't know. I have been in education for over 10 years and I think this is a bad mistake.
