In the advice it says we should use "blue coloured euro-connectors to BS EN 60309" anyone got a picture or link to what these are?

I've had this as well, just took the eraser felt out of the holder, turned it around so the packer is outside and the felt inside and hey presto it works and they can still use the rubber as it still slides on the board.

Yes, got that far, had to uninstall WSUS v1 before it would let me get anywhare near installing V3, so done that and had to install .NET as well, so now ready to install. It has previously downloaded alot of updates so they are in a directory I found, suppose I'd better delete them and let it start from afresh as I don't know if it uses the same folder for the v3 install although I think from reading the notes I have to specify the location at one stage.

Fortunately the only wireless devices we have are the netbooks and I may plug them in to the network to do the updates on them at a holiday period so I should be OK. Good idea about the testing though, will kepp that in mind.

...causing little upset to the PC's? (they are quite well out of date so will do all pre SP3 packs first) Is SP3 OK now with redirected folders etc as originally I understood it to break these so have stayed away from it so far and it may have to wait for a longer holiday to do.

Thanks for that, will take the plunge and set it up. Just a thought, when the clients get the updates do they need to be logged on or can they be just sat at a login screen and the update occur anyway. Sorry if its a bit of a simple question but never had anything to do with WSUS before.

Would love a copy of any cleaning procedures so I can see what needs doing, the more models the better, maybe we could all add to it to make up a resources for all? Most of our buget seems to go on these things now and any chance to extend the life would be great.

I too work across four primaries and I'm afraid at some point they wil haveto learn how to log on. We have two scenarios: No.1 The children have their class name along with the same for the password, they just learn from an early stage (some get help in the early years lower KS1) No.2 The only concession we give is that we shorted the login names (class based) i.e. foundation children have FS or FS1 etc with no password, further up KS1 they have y2, no password and in KS2 they have year5 with a password, helps to get them used to secondary wherethey will have to log in. Not really the answer you were looking for but a better way to go, providing a graphical interface for logging in is just putting off the inevitable and a vital skill they really need to learn. The teachers just need to take the time to teach them these skills unfortunately.

Just started looking at the WSUS as we (as I have just discovered it was installed) a very old version on our server. Didn't even know it had been set up when we had the server don years ago, anyway it didn't work as there were spelling mistakes in address's etc. Now got the lastes WSUS software, installed the latest .Net software, just about to install the WSUS software and thought about the clients as I'm sure some will have older versions of the Windows installer software on them. Looked on Microsoft for an msi, found what I though was the file bit it says its an .MSU not msi.... Windows Installer are they the same of can someone point me in the right direction. Thought I'd best get them up to date first then the new version of WSUS willnot complain. Any thing to watch out for from you experienced users, tips help?

In the end I did what I should have done in the beggining, bite the bullet and revist my past and write a few asp pages to access an Access database. Once I'd got my head around it and found how to set up XP to run asp so I could test it before making it live online it was OK, only a couple of glitches but solved by visiting asp101.com forum (a very helpful place much like this one). It was not a complex job but what it does it fits the bill nicely. Thanks for the helpful suggestions anyway.

The card is not going to be connected to any outside network or internal only the NAS box which has no other connections. Its used puely for backup storage directly from the server, the document seems to say if its connected to an external network. Anyway I'll have to keep my eye on it and investigate further.

Tried cross over cable first but thats not the issue and checked with Iomega that the cable supplied was Ok to connect direct to the card and they said yes.

Yep its the DC, the second card is not connected at the moment to anything, and when its is if thats possible it will only be direct to the NAS. What issues and is this not a good idea then?

I have just installed a second network card in to our server so that I could connect our nas backup disk to it directly (checked I could do this) but did not seem to have any sucess in getting the NAS to be discovered on the network. Gave the new card a static address just like the server original (with a different IP of course!), is there anything I should be doing different?

password sorted on a last gasp trawl of my brain for what it could be :-) Should be a decent switch when I get hold of it, last time I used just a bog standard D-LINK 8 port switch and the performance was not brilliant for just a couple of PC's at a time, hence the switch to the CachePilot. Because this PC will move around with me (I cover 4 schools) any imaging will be done on a small independant network to the school one (its only really used for when new batches of PC's arrive) so it will be Fog -> Switch -> client PC's Now the next question, how do I find out the SU password or reset it! been a while since I used it!

Thanks, I'll remember that for next time...however it was a bit of a What a Plonker Rodney moment really..I do have another monitor to use...you've guessed it...the one I am looking at now attached to my own PC!!! (in any event more painless changing hardware with Linux than it would have been with windows!) All's fixed now and its back on its own PC. The PC is actually a cachepilot which has two network ports, can I use both for FOG to improve speed of imaging? I know I should have posted another messing in the Fog part of the forum but thought I'd ask.

Got a Fog server running on Ubuntu but the HD is a little small so I thought I would image the PC on to another better one I have with a larger HD, anyway, imaged OK, but of course it did not like the graphics, so offered me chance of low graphics, thought that would do for the moment, rebooted now monitor complains that signal frequency is out of range! and can't see anything. How do I get in to change the graphics settings before I get to the point I'm at now. Sure if I took it in to work with me it would work OK in another monitor as had this problem before with windows but I'm at home not at work and no other spare monitor!

I'll probably be getting back to you as well! Talk about coincidence, just had an NEC PC motheroard die on me, would solve that problaem in a fell swoop.

I need to put a form online so a users has to make choices along with adding their name and get the results to be automatically eneterd into a database/spreadsheet etc....OK I admit its for the Xmas dinner and menu choices I can sort one out that users can fill in and its emailed to me with their choices but would love to have it collated automatically as the form is filled in by each user as there will be about 160 people. The website does allow ASP scripts to be run so that may help. Did it once at Uni but that was a long time ago and had more time available then. Any suggestions, code etc.

Yes it was at 3:30 the problem arose, but as I say soon sorted it out. The problem was the child (primary) wanted to do a saveas but could not find the command to do it and they finish at 3:30! also the teacher was not an NQT...it was me ( yes I'm a teacher as well as techie )..so not a meltdown just something I needed to sort asap before I dashed off to a wasted 1.5 hours of my life, oops sorry I mean staff meeting! A delightful child has managed to turn off the File, Edit, etc menu in Word. How do I turn it on again? Googled it without much sucess so far...it is the end of the day! It's OK sods law, soon as I posted it found the toolbar at the side of the screen!

Only if the authority allow this to be done and our does not :-( As for passwords although it may link to AD as a primary we do not have individual passwords. P.S. When I mentioned Frog Trainer I meant the trainer who was supposed to help us all through the learning process of getting it up and running. A frog trainer would be something totally different, along the lines of Ripping Yarns "Crossing the Andes by Frog" if you're old enough to remember Ripping Yarns, if not Google it for a laugh, Michael Palin at his best.
