Your story sounds familiar and I was changing disk allocation on the server at first but since I changed all the server HDs it hasn't happened once in 6 months. It's mostly the bare metal backup jobs that caused these errors for me.

Put it this way I took 70 kilos of bike engine which is mostly Aluminium with steel and that was only £20 at current scrap rates. I took 2 kilos or pure copper bar as well and that was about £4.

Are you sure it's the space on the DPM server ? I had similar issues with misleading messages but it was the servers themselves, that I was backing up that were the problem. There wasn't enough free space on the drives to do that backups leading me to a lot resizing of the HDs. You need at least 15 gig free usually and on some roles you will need 20 gig + free. The best way to see if this is the problem is to load Windows Backup on the servers and check the error messages there or in the event log.

Probably not worth the fuel for something that is mostly steel.

If you are using automated task sequences to build your task sequences you can install all office on a test machine and then use a script to extract all the office updates and dump them into your office install folder, you can obviously use these updates in other scenarios as well.

The deployment fundamentals series by Johan Arwidmark are good books for this. I make my reference image using a task sequence and scripts based on his book.

Turn you check list into your disaster recovery plan: Dhcp can be backed up using the console or the netsh command, this will restore to 2008 R2 no problem. Back up all your data and test it, I like 2 backups if possible. Consider using a DFS name space on your shares, this will make moving/restoring data easier and probably simplify your share structure. You can back up share information from the registry as well. Use tools like NTFSFIX for your bulk permission settings. The file server should be one of your simpler servers to restore so take this into consideration with your design, take this opportunity to get things the way you want them. Ideally you would migrate the data to another server, check you have everything and then flatten the old server, you could then put everything back on the old server once it's upgraded. This can all easily be done with robocopy and altering DFS Paths, I have done it this way many times.

I'm reading these boxes can have trouble because of the Realtek nics and it's something that they still haven't managed to fix.

They don't live very long though unfortunately.

Yes it's gone up and we budgeted for a price rise as hinted earlier on but not for that much and we didn't expect the final figure through after April when all the budgets have been set!

How many users could one of these boxes handle with PFsense on just for firewall/routing?

What type of switch is it and can you read the log off it ? It could be some kind of loop or excessive broadcast somewhere stopping communication during log on if it isn't a software issue.

We use it I love the scripting side to it, it really makes it do pretty much whatever you want.
