Does that mean I can see who has amended a register in Lesson Monitor and when? If so, how would I see that information?

Have you tried gpupdate /force on them? We once had an issue where a few computers were still trying to run an old VBS printing script despite picking up all other GPO amendments.

Emergency Closure Procedure is linked to from the front page. This includes details of the three local radio stations that will advertise our closure. A message is placed on the front page as soon as the weather starts to turn bad stating whether the school is open or closed on that particular day. This is amended by the Head's PA who lives in the village but can login from home if required. If the school is closed, a text message is sent to all parents and staff using Keep Kids Safe's text messaging system.

@GrumbleDook I agree that staff should have laptops and your reasoning with regards to sharing is a valid one but IME experience the issue lays with them wanting a PC in their classroom because they don't want to connect it every morning (even if it's just plugging in power and a docking station) and neither do they want to carry it to and from school. If we had the money to do this then perhaps we would consider providing them with a laptop they can leave at home but we don't. That is why they were given the option to have either a PC or a laptop with it made perfectly clear that they couldn't have both and would have to bring the laptop into school with them. Although it didn't work in all cases, the vast majority were happy to have been consulted and not had a solution forced on them.

It's definitely CREO. Just make sure you get a trial version and test it before buying. We used Pro desktop for years with no problem but CREO is a massive PITA for our network. If you have previously run v8 I suspect that you may be OK though as we discovered that the documentation for PD8 helped us with CREO.

What is the provision of ICT across the school? Could you persuade SLT that if staff brought their laptop in each day that would free X PCs to install in a department that really needs them, or create a bookable suite for use by all departments? What is the policy for refreshing computers? Are those used by staff newer than those elsewhere? If they are older and starting to need replacing, could you argue that the money used to replace them would be better spent elsewhere?

Staff here were given a choice - desktop or laptop not both unless your department is prepared to buy a laptop out of their budget. If you're given a laptop you MUST bring it with you into school each day and as we removed full admin rights some time ago we no longer have random games installed or someone allowing their husband to run their business on it (I kid you not!) From the ones that were returned we gave some to Exams for pupils who need scribes, can't write, etc.; we set some aside for cover if a member of staff with a laptop is ill, on a course etc.; we gave some for use with a wireless access point in the Food room as it wasn't possible / practical to install wired points in there; we put some in the staff room for use by PGCE students and we have a few spares to cover any other eventualities.

Slowly but surely we are moving away from laptops. It is much better to have fixed PCs for driving whiteboards and staff have full home school access. The vast majority that used to complain that they needed one to take home were those on higher salaries (Department Heads, etc) who would then complain about the age of the laptop despite knowing that we had no money!

We buy a lot from Probrand. Standard carriage is £5 but a comparison of prices (they give you a login for Public Sector pricing) often means that the carriage charge isn't worth worrying about. Deliveries normally take about 3 days but we have paid extra in the past for next day, again the overall price making it worth doing.

The most effective tool we found is cfremover cfremover.exe although this was about 18 months ago. All other tools seemed quite ineffective at the time but using that eradicated it for us. We also created a folder called autorun.inf on all server hard drives as someone once told me that this helps. Not sure whether it's true or not but we have been Conficker free since then!

I tend to sift through the packaged shirts at TKMAxx as they are normally good quality ones at a fraction of the (ridiculously extortionate) price. Annoyingly for me though they seemed to just throw them in one section now whereas before they were arranged by collar size so much easier to look through. If you can, go and have a look in Debenhams as the shirt I bought looked a hell of a lot better IRL than online and I think there were a couple that were the opposite i.e. awful IRL but looked great online.
