  2. i think 2k is the limit for hobbies, i rememeber ebay saying they were going to charge tax on anyone who went over 2k.
  3. there are 2 ways of doing this. remove admin rights on machines then they cant install anything. or use ie7 adm in group policy to turn off the toolbars ( however it wont uninstall them, just stop them loading)
  4. we use 768mb minimum on our machines, 512 is ok for idling, but if you get a bunch of youngsters in there all running several programs at once and a teacher demanding it reacts we find 768 is the minimum you can get away with.
  5. try disabling it. a firewall blocks communication so its a likely cause of you not being able to see the internet on your machine. also press the start bar, goto run, type CMD into the run window, then in the new black window type in "ping www.google.co.uk" then press enter and tell us what that does.
  6. We have a user group, i have to say it doens't work as well as it should do. The people involved are people who have a responsibility for ict in the school rather than those who have an interest. We end up in meetings debating what we can and cant do and only have meetings when one of the group want an opportunity to use other teachers to push things . What i prefer is finding all intrested parties and consulting them before a change. So for instance when we moved to office 2007 i consulted the IT department, some of the admin staff, the head and the bursar. We dont involve pupils as they should esculate their feelings through staff, but again staff only pass these on if they want to be a hero to the pupils or if it suits them.
  7. How does it work in your school? At the moment i'm tempted to buy some cheapo laptops and bang them on the wall behind the lcd screens. Then use either a website or a startup script to run a presentation. At the moment no solution wants to offer us all of what we want: - internet connection - centralised distrubtion of presentation. - centralised input
  8. use them for the actual exams, no comment really, functional i suppose!
  9. I'll do anything for a pint! A pint of love?
  10. nice site, like the cost per sheet info.
  11. they dont need to, they just inform the tax man that they're a teacher and that they are very busy.
  12. my understanding is that if its part of there contract that they have one then they are taxed, as per company car. if they are given one to use then its not taxable.
  13. hello all, we've been offered a digital signage system that we would like to use over cat5, to do so we've been told we can use vlans or direct cat 5. We'd like to use a vlan but i have a few questions, how do you access a headless box if you not on the same vlan, and how would we set up that vlan with internet access ( my best guess is assign a port to the vlan and plug it into the firewall? )
  14. thanks all, i've tested rohos and its superb, however its not quite free enough for me, does anyone know of a cheapskate version?
  15. i find the best way to deal with stress is to laugh at people, when the idiot teacher rants they've lost work tell them all about your backup plan and how it works and how hes actually a complete tool for losing it!. and if it gets too much, dont fight it, give in, go on holiday, hand in your notice!. Fighting it is a losing battle.
  16. if you static address's are sequential you can exclude them from the scope ( the list of ip's that are dished out) or set the scope to start dishing out ip's after your list of static ip's end. have a look at the video on dhcp at http://www.itidiots.com
  17. prob best to have a look at 70-620 ms exam. will be the equilivent of the xp 270.

    farewell!, hope all goes well
  19. i thought it only updated gp during log on and that existing policies would stay in place untill it had a gpupdate? i could well be wrong.
  20. you'll find that IT is different things to different people, some independent schools see it as a massive part of the school, others dont. Generally in independent schools they still look for value but they also look for quality. you'll need to be a little more innoviate than in the maintained sector as there are fewer parties pushing for things to happen.
  21. i've tried to do some research into this but i'm dammed if i can find anything useful!. does anyone know of any cheap/free solutions that would mean i could stop typing in my password, even if only on one machine.
  22. excellent, why didn't i think of that!, thanks plexer
  23. hello, i need to copy a file to all the machines in the school, it needs to be on the c drive , which most of our users dont have access too, is there an easy way to do this?
  24. ah, more nelson thornes, a psychogy program that asks you to create a shortcut to a splash html page, that goes no where, index.html is much more use, but not mentioned!
  25. the splitter is added onto the existing cable chap. it has one female and 2 males. ( i think) so it sits on the pc and has the 2 outputs running from it.
