to do the network share bit change your bootstrap.ini file to read simlar to below [settings] Priority=Default [Default] DeployRoot=\\pc\DeploymentShare1$ (right click on deploymentshare, rules, edit bootstrap.ini) once you've done this you'll need to update the share (right click on deploymentshare, update) then find the boot file \\pc\deploymentshare\boot\.... and burn to cd/dvd to create an all in dvd goto advanced config, media, new media.

nope, you can run it from a cd/dvd or you can use a dvd/cd to call a network share. the only extra wds gives you as i can see is pxe boot and multicast.

mdt will pickup its pe from whatever is installed, if you have a version of 7 imported to it then it will use that.

turn on logon caching so the laptop remembers they're username and password so they can log on

i'm using mdt on its own without wds, does all i want, boots from cd/dvd or over network ( using pe) . allows me to install several different scenario types easily. big thumbs up from me.

they will require a reboot at some stage, and we all know pc's awaiting a reboot can be a lil unstable, but you should see little in the way of side effects, i'd wager you'll not see any. as for sp3, the only thing i know it breaks is wired authenication 802.1x. you could always deploy it to just a few machines and see if it breaks, its always good to have a waterfall system with updates so you can test them. eg group1 - all updates, group2 - security updates, service packs group3 - no updates.

the updates will filter though in the background sing BITS, this will seemlessly use any spare bandwidth to send the updates. The updates will then install at the time you set in the group policy.

how many different laptop types are there? , you'll need to beta test this to the baps.

or look at mdt 2010, create an image with applications and deploy via usb or cd (although cd is useless for this its a decent option if you want to use the image elsewhere)

bartpe does run from a usb, very well infact. i would have recommended it anyway. if you use driveimage xml it could read the image from a network share.

option 2 m'dear. everytime, you'll only be wasting (wo)man hours chasing bad equipment. Cheaper and more uptime if you go for something new and shiney ( or slightly older but wonderfully priced )

If your suggesting are we are only in jobs because MS software is commonplace then you are very very wrong, we are in jobs because teaching staff often lack the skills needed to use technology and dont have the time or knowledge to maintain a computer system.
