Well, I am underway with this on-site. I want to check before I demote the old DC: So far, I have installed the OS, promoted to a DC, installed DNS & DHCP, Transferred FSMO roles. When I try to demote the old DC I get the following message: this domain controller is a global catalog server. Global catalogs are used to process user logons. You should make sure other global catalogs are accessible to users of this domain before removing active directory from this computer If I continue, I get this message: the box indicating that this domain controller is the last controller for the domain is unchecked. However, no other active directory domain controllers for that domain can be contacted There is no sysvol or netlogon share on the new DC. I'm abit cautious about demoting the old DC until I know the new server is functioning properly. Any ideas? I'm guessing it's something to do with DNS. Many thanks,

I'm now looking at upgrading the exchange member server to server 2008 r2 x64 from server 2003 x32. As well as the terminal server to 2008 r2 x64. Can someone confirm my fears that this requires a comple reinstall rather than an upgrade?

Hi guys, I have 5 servers at our place, all working well. They are still running Server 2003. Has anyone upgraded the OS recently? It pains me to carry out the upgrade on any of our servers whilst the network is running so well, but we have the licenses available to upgrade. I was thinking earlier that Windows Server 2003 is now 7 years old! I use Microsoft Exchange 2003 to host the school emails, installed on Windows Server 2003. The email system has worked faultlessly for staff and pupils ever since I first installed it. When would you think about upgrading the OS and Exchange Server software? Would you go straight to 2010 or 2007? Any advice or thoughts will be welcomed. Many thanks,

You can configure the users to use the 'all users' start menu for each local machine. It's in the GPO. That's the only thing I can think of, we have used mandatory profiles for pupils for many schools, with no issues.

Hi guys, I'm back to bug you all again! What do you do with the antivirus console? We use Sophos Enterprise Console. If I install the console on the new server, the clients will still be pointing to the old server name. Is it just a case of redeploying the antivirus to the client PCs? Finally, will I be able to keep the same IP address as the old server? I'm pretty sure that I will be OK to, but I didn't know if changing the address after replicating DNS, DHCP and Active directory if this would cause a problem. I have ran this once in my test environment, and the instructions provided by danrhodes were perfect. With regards to moving the shares and acl's, I think I'm just going to use it as an opportunity to restructure the folders and make sure everything is controlled with NTFS permissions. Many thanks,

Hi mate, Thanks for your help with this. I have another query: When I install DNS & DHCP before I promote it, do I configure it with identical settings to the old server? Do I need to remove DNS and DHCP on the old server at this point so that there is no conflicts? Many thanks,

We currently use CLEO's NED box. The proxy server box remains unticked, but use an automatic configuration scipt is ticked with settings added. Does this neat little app remove that too?

I actually got side tracked from my test, so I'm still looking at it. I'm not looking to carry out the transfer until the summer, but I wanted plenty of practise and preperation. Does anyone know if you manually put in the settings for DHCP & DNS or does the migration import them?

At what point to I need to do this?

I'm going to try this in a test environment today. Does anyone know if it is possible to do this and ultimately keep the same server name? Thanks again.

That sounds too easy! There must be more to it than that? I'm trying to find a walkthrough from somewhere that will give me step by step method.

Hi guys, I have the task of transferring a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller to a brand new server. Does anyone know of any good guides to follow? Also, the school has a volume license which enables us to use Windows Server 2008. The network only has Windows XP installed on all of the client computers. Would you upgrade the OS with the migration or is there no point? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi guys, I have recently ordered 30 new laptops. SMT would like me to install Windows 7 to see what people think of it. I have a Server 2003 Domain controller, so using group policy preferences and client side extensions in server 2008 is not really an option. Does anyone have an up-to-date vb script to map network printers in Windows 7? Many thanks, DGardner

We have set up push email within the CLEO network. You need to submit a request for an external IP address from CLEO for your exchange server. Configure your server. This helped me: Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access errors occur when SSL or forms-based authentication is required for Exchange Server 2003 Basically, Outlook Web Access uses the same ports as Outlook Mobile Access. Once you can successfully access OWA from outside the CLEO network, you are ready to configure your IPhones for push email. This can be quite confusing, as it needs to be exactly right. Make sure your iphones are configured as below: email : (username)@(school).cumbria.sch.uk server : server external IP address. (I got this by pinging the OWA URL) Domain : school domain (with no .local or .cumbria.sch.uk extension) username : OWA username (with no @school.cumbria.sch.uk extension) SSL: on Hope this helps,

Hi guys, I have just bout the new iPhone 3gs. Does anybody know of it is possible to connect to a server using Sun Global Desktop? I am a begginer with the iPhone and mac stuff. Surely there is an app out there somewhere for this? Thanks to posters in advance, DGardner

If it is the same problem as we have here, installing Vista will not fix it. I have tried it already, I'm thinking it is hardware related...

We have this problem with 3 out of 4 Vostro laptops. It just suddenly stopped working. It is also happening with some of our D520s. I had since written this off as dodgy hardware, it would be fantastic if someone had a fix!
