I've had loads of teachers trying to wrangle free technical support for their home PC as they "often use it for work". If you boot the machine it's nearly always a family member's machine, and full of viruses. On one occasion, I was given a £2 bottle of red wine for 2 hours work. After that, I decided to agree a fee up front. This, however, backfired when said Teacher left a cheap box of chocolates on my desk when I was out of the office, rather than pay the agreed fee. Now I just wouldn't waste my time taking on private jobs, unless it was for a small business (and billed accordingly), or for a friend. I recommend a local support firm and they can see the standard costs involved for themselves. Before I judge whether or not to to take on the job, I ask myself 'Would this teacher offer private tutoring for my kids for free/a £2 bottle of wine/a box of chocolates?' If the answer is yes, I'd repair their machine. It's funny, however, how often the answer to this is 'No'!

In what context? The OP asked about VM hosts in a cluster attached to a SAN. Is that not essentially a vmware (or any virtualisation product) cluster?

I would agree with @Duke regarding VMWare clustering. If the money is available, than I wouldn't consider it overkill. In fact, I would consider it good practise. Since we installed our VMware infrastructure we have had 100% uptime. I suppose it depends on your network and the priorities for investment.

I'd go VMware for virtualisation and Veeam for backups. It's a good idea to split off roles into separate VMs like you have suggested, I'd always have 2 DCs regardless of the size of the organisation. We have Veeam installed on a physical rack server with direct fiber connection to the SAN (which is our VM datastore). You can mount backups to get them online in minutes. I think the VMware licensing is calculated per processor rather than per host. VMware is expensive, but I think it's worth the cost as the support is excellent. I wouldn't like to rely on open source software and forums for support should you run into major problems.

We use Veeam here too, Mon-Thurs reverse-incrementals and Friday Full backup of our entire VM estate (about 2TB compressed, mostly thin provisioned). As for the device, it's a WD RAID 0 6TB external usb hard drive than copied to a QNAP NAS in a different building. I personally think that Veeam is the best software that we have purchased. We backup at about 190MB/S and can restore entire VMs in minutes. Testing backups has never been easier! Unfortunately I can't convince SMT to purchase another SAN to setup replication too!

The picket line has a maximum limit of 6 members per union. Picketing and picket lines : Directgov - Employment The union rep wouldn't be doing their job properly if they couldn't get 6 members (depending on circumstances). As it happens, I don't have much sympathy with the Teachers at my current school or my last one. I can't recall a single teacher even feigning an interest in the support staff's plight over single status.

First thing to try is to setup an alternative proxy server and use that instead. Make sure you configure Veeam to use that rather than the automatic proxy selection. I noticed the performance improved when I did that here. You may also want to install the following patch: KB1442: Patch 3 Release Notes for Veeam Backup & Replication 6.0.0.153 Hope this helps.

We have one host with 6 vms, but soon to be 3 hosts. We ideally want an improvement in performance, as the current VMs are being stored on a QNAP NAS. I'd like to use the SAN to store the VMs and backup to the NAS using Veeam. The only reason I didn't go this way when we put the VMware server in was because the SAN was already in production. Hi Guys, I have a few questions that I hope you can help me with. Does anybody know of a decent guide to configure VMWare ESXi (5.0) with a physical SAN? Ideally I'd like a condensed version, as the one on the vmware website is massive! We just need the basic connection to configure the SAN as a datastore. Do you need to purchase additional license features to enable iSCSI support? Our current license is Vsphere 5 essentials pro. Is there much to configure on the SAN end to prepare it to be used as a datastore? We have an IBM SAN 16B-2. We have had the SAN for a few years, and only recently installed the VMware virtualised estate. I now need to organise getting the data off it and storing the VM's on the SAN. I haven't got a great deal of experience with SAN configuration. Many thanks in advance for any comments and advise.

I've only ever seen this happen with 1 jailbroken iPhone. Said user wiped his iPhone with the latest software and it connected straight away. I have also seen users with jailbroken iPhones connect no problem, so it may have been a coincidence. Either that or they used more up-to-date software to jailbreak...

If you don't use the IP address for the Exchange 2010 box that your ISP is relaying mail to, it will definitely not work. I also seem to remember that Exchange 2010 was very fiddly with certificates. Especially if you have alternative common names for OWA etc. I had no end of trouble with that...

We use live@edu here, so it's been a while since I used Exchange 2010 and I'll be rusty. I'm fairly sure that you need an incoming smtp connector and route the mail through the smart host (which will be isp issued) the last one I worked on was a dns name. I think it was in the hub transport section.

It doesn't matter really. It's generally good practise to install it on a member server with no other roles. It will have to handle things like certificate requests and licensing stuff too. You can use vsphere to connect a single esxi host, or to a VCenter server and manage multiple hosts, clusters or datastores.
