I have a question for Phil or Andy with regards to power protection. The 7110 SAN is being powered though a UPS and direct mains, the question I have is in the event of power outage the SAN will have a sudden power loss. The servers accessing the disks should have powered down before this happens so disk access will be nonexistent but is this good for the SAN? Should an agent be loaded onto the SAN to do a graceful shutdown? I currently have APC UPS's with the network management card and the switch protected but the UPS also! Any advice or guides much appreciated. Thanks, Rob

Just come back from a meeting with Andy (Cutter) and Phil (SUN) (Thanks Guys!!) Phil gave a very intresting presentation on the road map of the 7000 series and it’s looking amazing. Those of you using them for home shares etc will have some very interesting options coming your way which I guarantee you'll love!! Unfortunately cannot say what exactly but trust me you will be happy! Generation 2 of the 7110 looks interesting I would say it’s becoming more like the other higher end boxes but at a better starting price bracket so looking to be brilliant option for lower budgets. All I can say is watch this space and if you’re in the market for a SAN or unified storage systems then these boxes are looking to be a good longer term investment.

I've just with playing with the conversion tool and managed to do a couple of successful p2v conversions now but have hit a bit brick wall! When booting I have control of the VM and can do F8 for example and select my boot mode but once Windows is up and can’t even use the keyboard let alone the mouse! Doesn't matter how long I wait even basic drivers don’t seem to be selected so there is no chance of me logging in and installing the Xen drivers! Has anyone else had this problem and overcome this? Thanks!

I found it; the CD option is only for Linux BTW. I found it by logging onto the site and searching there, though not having much luck with it as it keep failing to copy to the XenServer. I'll work it out! Thanks guys.

'xenconvert' I couldn’t see one that does Windows P2V for XEN any ideas where I could get my hands on this, would really help!! Thanks!

Thanks, Symantec Backup Exec seems to have the option so will have to see if that’s a possibility.

Do these backup units have to be connected directly or can this be pulled over the network to a remote server? I'm assuming this will backup live locked LUNs as well? Thanks, Rob

The JBODs are just SAS storage arrays; I'm hoping to use it to expand on the current raid setup with SAS disks to provide massive expansion of storage at high speeds.

I have a question, do the SUNs support over allocation on LUNs? For example can I allocate a 1TB LUN for example if I only have 500 gigabytes of free space? EDIT: Sparse volume might be what I'm looking for, will have to check first.

That’s a very similar reason we used App-V it also allows us to run multiple versions of software on the same machine without conflict. Also running programs like Sibelius over RemoteApp will provide some interesting problems when you come to connection sound devices for example as your running the program on the server not at the client.

Microsoft App-V is much better if you only want to stream applications without installation, I have tired RemoteApp and its very good but you need the backend servers to be beefy if high concurrent usage unlike App-V!

I also have one of these units and I'm very impressed so easy to setup and the software on the unit is brilliant! Speed so far I haven’t even scratched the surface as my current switch isn’t up to the job. The build quality of the server itself seems very good also and some nice guides to get you up and running in no time. Will defiantly be purchasing a second unit (from Cutter) in the summer along with some JBOS to expand on the storage, also need to look at a better dedicated ISCSI switch so any recommendations welcomed!

What sort of cost is XenServer with all the enterprise features coming out like for a 2 server setup for example?

Never been blow away with HP myself, though the SUN hardware I had recently seems very good! Support seemed expensive but then again that was only because I was more aware of the cost compared to our Dell kit.

Like what has been said before 3 decent servers quad core as much ram as you can afford, a decent SAN like the SUN 7110 (have one myself) these will support adding extra jbod units to increase their storage capacity. Then later one you can a mirror SAN to this setup in a remote location for high availability. To complement this hardware go with a virtual infrastructure like VMWare if you have the money or MS Hyper-v, Xen. Networking wise 2 GB/s bound NICs you’re not going to be pushing that for some considerable time, then just go upward with 4 GB/s if needed. Get 2 decent core switches at least, one for the SAN and one for the main network giving you plenty of flexibility. You could perhaps use older servers as proxy backup pulling snapshots direct from the SAN or remote agents for the virtual servers. Don’t forget a decent backup unit like LTO4 with a SAS connection for example which will give you fast backup 3 GB/s and high capacity with this extra storage you’re going to have.

Excellent, I've solved it. Somehow my Sharepoint Designer connected to the site using FQDN, now the site is only setup using server name as the collection so when I reconnected SPD as server name boom I could save the workflow! Now all I’ve got to do is work out why emails won’t sent from workflow but will from notifications and I'm a happy man.

Ok just tried creating a brand new workflow and exactly the same error when collecting data from a user, any other tasks work fine! What’s going on?
