Hi Matt, That problem was caused by my services running under a domain account, switched to local service solved that problem thanks!! I think I'm at the last hurdle now however it’s now not accepting the backup location. If I leave it default or even set it to something simple like D:\backup (folder exists) nothing. Commanded or via the GUI. I'm really not worried about setting that location now I can do it later but it just will not accept it!

I agree with fawkers here as the instant name should only really be needed to separate the services, registry etc but anyway I have changed this to SIMS2008 in the hope that helps. So I then tried the way you suggested by detaching the original database, moving to the new server and then running the migration tool. All looked good until I reached this message next hurdle. The server is SQL01\SIMS2008 (Win 2008 x64) tried R2 and non R2 just to confirm. Configured XP_CMDShell and enabled name pipes. 100% running as Admin (UAC disabled).

This is the next plan, setup another server move 'SIMS' to that then run the migraton to SQL2008 on that server.

I'm doing a dummy run of migrating our current SIMS server (setup by Capita) to a new 2008 SQL virtual server. Right I have all the new systems setup exactly how I want it so time now to migrate the database, this is where the fun begins. Trying to use the SIMS SQL2008 Migration tool but I'm facing an error which Capita basically won't help me with unless I pay them lots of money....don't we already? Anyway the error I'm receiving when using the GUI version trying to save the updated database to a file so I can migrate it to the new server. "SQL Binn folder is missing or inaccessible - Please seek advice" "Unable to get registry keys for SQLBinRoot or SQLData from registry - Please seek advice" (the please seek advice bit should be replaced with pay Capita lots of money) Anyway Capita wont help me with this, do any of you guys know where I might locate the registry keys it missing, I've had a good poke about but can't see anything. Luckily I do need to do any configuration with my pools at the moment, however I have notice the DNS service has failed to start! It’s a good job I don’t need DNS as it’s only being use an iSCSI target in a dedicated network. I'm happy to upload any support bundles if needed however as the issues isn’t effecting me I don’t want to spend ages explain the problem to SUN for them to realise it’s not really effecting my setup. It’s a shame as for me everything else is working great! Common SUN this box is great but it need to mature faster, much faster!!

Many thanks for the replies; I was just concerned about the load after seeing our SharePoint server’s (default homepage) load explode! I’m now considering adding a second server to the farm setup so that might be a summer job. The Eclipse lib server VM also will needs rebuilding as it’s only x86 and its just been peppered since we purchased the SharePoint web parts. Of course I when was then thinking about e-mail web parts and started worrying about the same scenario. Though obviously the spec will be expediently higher! The system Ill probably run on one host server and split the roles into several guest VMs, this will make it easier to migrate if needed and also add to if load does become an issue.

Just done the update, (was keen for some of the new features and changes). Looking excellent, BUI is much faster for me anyway, you have sorted iscsi with targets being only allowed 1 interface connection. Replication BUI is much better as well much easier to control! Also the shares tab is much better laid out with Local and Replica shares. Looking good guys keep up the good work! Not even started playing with some of the bigger changes yet.

Right, we currently have a very bad externally host mail solution which I really want to scrap. Now I've had some experience with Exchange 03 before so we have decided that’s the route we would like to take among many other reasons. Now what information I'm after is basically what are peoples setups with regards to how many servers, split roles, resource allocation (these will be virtual servers, hyper-v) etc. Give or take we will probably end up with about 2000 mailboxes, I'm only going to have office staff and maybe some other staff on Outlook for now, the rest will use OWA. That could parentally be accessed concurrently by up to 800 machines and that’s just internally (external access, active sync for all the iPhone’s etc etc) So what would people recommend, I'm going to put the client access roles on a separate VM and then transport and mailbox roles on another VM. These can have anything up to 24 GB ram allocated each if they need it so I have plenty of resources, VHDs will be stored on the SAN (thanks SUN). Is it worth adding another mailbox/transport server and then setting up a DAG for HA and load sharing? I'm trying to get some figures from our current e-mail provider about how much mail per mailbox there is and what’s received per day etc to try and understand the load that could be placed on this system. As far the information I have received looks high. How have people setup their current Exchange systems, I’ll be very interested to hear. Thanks for any information, it will be of great help! Rob

Just an update, I’ve been investigating MPIO and it works very well with the 7000’s, Currently using Windows 2008 R2 you can easily see the load is evenly split between the NICs\ subnets and Windows iSCSI doesn't worry that you can only bond one IQN per link which I heard XenServer has some issues with. (Sun\Oracle Forums) It’s a good setup with redundant links and load balancing bundled together in one package. Yeah forget IPMP was a pain to setup and no gain if you’re using MPIO.

I use to but now back in a secondary. I do miss the much more relaxed attitudes of the staff and non teaching staff malarkey.

Er, don't we have UPS for this exact problem, I do!! I would be on the phone to APC finding out exactly what happened and to make sure it doesn't again!

Currently 8Mbps SDSL with Appliansys Cachebox 200 for 800 machines will be upgrading immanently to 100Mbps fibre. The current line does work ok, though the Cachebox is because of this, otherwise it would just come tumbling to a halt. Do you have any kind of caching server, also is your line standard ADSL or SDSL?

Anyone using IPMP, what are peoples setups want to use this with the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator? Mainly due to Microsoft’s limitations of trucking when it comes to there initiator.

We currently have a similar setup with WSS and SLG some documents and Library webparts, I will be bring online an Exchange server so e-mails will now be in-house and AD integrated. I want to lose our useless county provided VLE so was thinking SharePoint might be a good platform as this is now our portal for staff, students and parents. What have other people done with SharePoint to bring it to VLE spec, some of those packages look interesting but I want to be a flexible as possible and not be tied down to a single provider. If anyone would mind sharing what they have done with SharePoint I and the community I’m sure would be very interested.

I tried that but my home machine (not domain aware) sulks at a unidentified certificate, even when I try importing the certificate (user and computer) it still sulks. What the heck have Microsoft done, looked around the web and this seems to be a common problem! I would love to get this sorted so I can offer the service to some of our staff.

Ahhh! Is it me or can I not configure any servers on the Dell website! Driving me mad , I need to get an order in but want to configure my options first before firing my e-mail across!
