Distance is a rough tool at best, without SNR / Attenuation figures it's near on impossible to predict the sync you'd get. Another rough method would be asking next door neighbour for line details if they're fed from the same BT pole.

Appreciate your view but it's horses for courses in my book. I know that I have 20mbit when I want it and it's not going to fluctuate with the phone line quality in bad weather, nor need I worry about BRAS profiles and other issues with Christmas tree lights, faulty street lamps that I used to need to consider with ADSL. I pull down a fair amount of stuff with backuppc talking to servers constantly throughout the day and night, and yes, sometimes I get throttled down to 5mbit which is annoying but still better than a lot of people get either on ADSL1 or a contended ADSL2+ circuit/bad line/etc. I've never seen throttled to 256k before; perhaps that's a fault that needs to be raised as my understanding was always that it would be throttled to 25% of the subscribed rate. I'm not saying VM are any better than ADSL ISPs as to be honest it all depends upon a) what you pay for, and b) what you expect for your money. Short of living on top of the exchange and connected to Be*/o2 I wouldn't want ADSL if I could have cable.

I think you'd regret a move from Cable > DSL simply because of the unpredictability outlined above in line quality. If the box is the problem, ask for a different branded one, I've got a sammy and the v+ box and they are both fine for me.

I'd think so yes, check with someone like Ramesys though, they steered me right when I was looking for a single server as the media server and then backing up remote ones with the various agents.

If the problem is the back up tape, you could just exclude those filetypes from the back up but you need to be careful as some of the files could be work related etc. Alternatively, something like Tree Size might be helpful as far as indicating where the space is being occupied if there's anything you could do there. Do you have quota's enabled? Finally, to actually keep the structure you could possibly script something to traverse the folders and move said filetypes out of the way, it looks as though rsync could do this on linux with --exclude=* followed by --include=*.mp3 or so. Hope this helps give a little more.

Last I heard RM didn't support the printer credits stuff on member servers. My experience was just to build a normal 2003 member server without any of the RM software and make sure any printers I install I 'list in the directory' and it's always worked ok for me.

Soulfish, Looks exactly like what I seen yesterday (when talking to a 2008 R2 DC!); have a look in the logs and see if there's anything about being unable to import resource.

Yep, seen this yesterday. Try lowering the Lan Manager compatibility level to 2 under CIFS and if necessary set a specific DC as a preferred DC (only used prior to joining).
