It depends how many people you're looking at doing this for as to whether you persevere and work out how to use the domain accounts or create them a local account (in addition to their domain one) with the same username/password which if I remember rightly be enough to trick it into mapping drives without asking for domain credentials. (My place we used domain accounts no local ones so can't confirm... can someone else?) If you're more comfortable giving them a local logon and putting a logon script in their "Startup" folder to map their drives etc that's fine you just need to remember that if anything changes on the network, a new server, or new mapped drive you'd need to do it on all of the machines separately unless you have another way. The scripts pretty straight forward, I'll dig it out but it's effectively robocopy "C:\My Documents\*" "H:\My Backup" /MIR with some arguments to only make it try once to do a file before giving up (if its open/access denied/whatever) (I'm not on a windows machine at the moment, drop me a reminder tomorrow and I'll see what I have). I'm sure powdarrmonkey and sparkeh amongst others will have loads of good ideas of what they do in their schools and between us all we'll help you learn and build something that works for you.

Don't worry, you can ignore the policy stuff if its not applicable to you. If you put a folder on their C drive called "My Documents" and a shortcut to this on their desktop using a local logon if you want, a little script can be written to copy everything rom C:\My Documents to H:\ (whatever letter their home directory is when they're connected to the network).

What were the payrises given for? (That really is the question here as to whether their job /should/ change)

We did similar at my previous place. Rather than use local logons, we used their domain one but blocked inheritence of policies and did it ourselves but the upshot was that we had their documents and desktop held locally and provided a script to back it up onto their home directory on the network. We figured meeting them halfway was OK plus we knew that it wasn't going to be back up the cruft we didn't want like their temporary internet files and cookies or personal music collections!

Two thoughts. SLG2 from Capita 'just works' in this way, or the LP+ web parts may include this functionality now/future but you'd be better talking to Tony.

Might be worth checking out /etc/X11/xorg.conf and setting the driver to vesa (obviously being careful to copy what is there now to put it back if it doesn't work). I don't know much about Suse, but yast2 would have been the first place I looked too.

Log on to one of the machines as the user, open Excel, turn the macro security off, close excel. Run the sims report, does it come up immediately?

Perhaps using those simpler letters have A r t down the left hand side in the empty space, thin horizontal line to break it to the right , and then move 'to' onto the second line so you can either see the 'easy' Art or read the more complex but quite pretty and beautiful message.

Oh I see, maybe worth emphasising that in the original post as it does smell like DNS until you mention that! What are you seeing? Failed to logon support.domain.com\yourname ?

Can you view http://support.domain.com from inside? (if no you probably need a DNS Zone added internally for domain.com so you can set support.domain.com to point to the internal IP of servername). A similar discussion has taken place recently for moodle at tanfield high which may help.

I'd flatten it as per dhicks advice but if it wasn't doing it when you got it, what have you done to speed it up etc and maybe this'll help point us in the right direction. Important though to do what AngryTechnician suggested to see if you can get a decent error out of it.

Seen this when we took on SLG2 before I left; happened when an account was created in System Manager but not linked from personnel or whatever. (Whilst waiting for personnel to put people on the system we were pushed to give them SIMS access so this worked as a measure)..

Do you currently have approved filtering in place? (If not, there's a pretty punchy argument for you!)

I think 1/2hr is a bit far fetched whilst it is relatively straight forward if you're training anyone it's still a cost to consider be it time, or money. You can then add on the problem of what if teachers don't do the register because of reason x, y or z which may (probably) are more frequently than not doing a paper copy. I do however think the actual move is a wise one, it does make sense but it needs to be thought about especially with the schools Learning Gateway 2 product etc which will/are becoming more appealing/necessary.
