Good show, thats what it's all about. I was a governor at my previous school (albeit a Staff Governor) and I enjoyed observing teaching colleagues doing what they did best and I did have to admit, they taught a lot better than I could ... talk about the right vocations!

hehehehe ... 4th of December! Going for around 10 days in this first venture but I think ultimately it's going to take more trips but more than anything it's a case of providing the tools (and key word here is documentation) to sustain and develop their solutions for themselves. The base platform is 2003 with XP Clients in a 'vanilla' AD network with bolt on's including hmailserver (ldap auth), WAMP with Moodle (ldap auth), Squirrelmail (back to the hmailserver) and plenty of nice apps like Hot Potatoes etc to help stimulate and develop their teaching resources. The key here is providing an 'out of the box' solution which can be scaled, each school will have one or two servers depending upon numbers and it needs to provide things we take for granted such as secure private learning space, shared areas for the various user groups and more than anything a simple structure to make adding users and computers an easy task that anyone can do. I intend on writing up about my experiences as I do genuinely believe this is something we can all do and coming together like this proves that. I'm absolutely speechless (though that might be the few pints of export tonight) by the support everyone has shown and I can't thank you all enough from the bottom of my heart.

GJE, as a fellow RM Mod back in the days again you're a superb bloke and I'm as always grateful for your time and efforts. Shep, as always, a very loyal friend, even if you drive drive a mario kart like bowser Teejay, not had that much exposure with you fella but I hope I've somehow helped you somewhere along the line as your offer has made me shiver it's truly fantastic to see people out of the woodwork to help us along. This feat is by no means a one off, if we can pull this off, the idea is to have 30-60 computers in place in a 'proper' network system whilst providing the tools for local people to manage it (ala teach a man to fish rather than give him fish). I'm stunned by everyone's support, I knew Edugeek was a warm community but I didn't think it could be this warm. Hi Tony, Not sure what issues you're having but the majority of our customers use Internet Explorer on our solutions without any problems? It is not however uncommon for tools such as Securus or of late Policy Central Enterprise to cause problems with IE on shared servers but this is in the minority. What spec is the TS?

I'd host internally if you can to take advantage of ldap authentication for your user accounts back to your AD. I'd also suggest getting some interested bodies together to have a think about what they want the VLE to do ... We used to have a VLE Working Party (didn't get any work done mind you ... ). Plenty of moodle'rs on here as secretlife said, we'll all chip in

Morning, I'm going to Africa soon to install some donated computers in a couple of schools and community centres in your average 2003 vanilla AD / XP environment for a charity. The domain/client model is all fine and working but it did dawn on me that a lack of reliable internet access is going to bite me in the bum quite quickly so I figured I'd ask the good folks on Edugeek for their advice on how to 'take' as many drivers as I can with me, or if we know of any genius ways of telepathic internet or so. Of course, with the hardware already there or on a ship currently I'm not privy to what's there other than some Dell GX150 / GX210 and some RM Accelerators (since my old school donated these I know what's in them!) My first 'idea' is to take a few copies of the AC97 audio driver as lets face it, loads of boards use it, but I'm more concerned initially with network cards, what's common in workstations these days, still realtek 8139's, or intel e100's? Even cooler would be if I borrow a list of nics you guys are using on your WDS/FOG boxes for the many many machines people look after to try and get as broad a range of drivers covered as possible so any internet exposure there (very expensive) is as low as possible. A big public thank you to Michael of Logistixonline.com too as I may end up benefitting from his update packs if I can't take a portable WSUS with me! Give me a shout if you need a hand with anything specific, I've been tasked to do a similar job creating a vanilla network to mimic the functionality of a CC3 network without the bloat/drama/cost and so far it's working pretty well indeed.

That might be what I was referring to, been out of the RM loop for a while now.

I always build a hierarchical organisation and move machines from the Computers OU to the relevant place so that the correct Group Policies apply.

Unless there's licensing stopping you using a particular application as some I have seen say "For use on a Community Connect 3 network" I've not ever had a problem using an RM MSI on a Vanilla machine but it's typically the other way round I've done it using Vanilla MSI's on an RM Network no problem.

It's not moodle that's crashing, its your browser. Have you tried another browser?

I'd get a bit more info, are you required to maintain it after the initial content is put into place, are you responsible for the server it is hosted on, ie. updates etc. Most importantly, find out what they expect from you, do they expect you to assist with problems in your new working day, would need to clear that kind of commitment with your new employer etc. Unfortunately though, people always struggle to strike up a cost for their services, consider what you earn now and do that job, perhaps on an hourly rate you could go in with that, but really it depends on what they expect from you.

Urm, if its ubuntu by default it won't have a known root password to directly su with. Does su root (insert your password) work? If so you could then passwd root and set one but to be honest, its fine left alone. If the machines will be attached to a switch you carry around with you, if its a decent switch all should be well, if you're plugging this cachepilot into existing infrastructure it will be a bit more tricky, but then, teaming the cards into an unknown infrastructure could be a pain too.

It'd probably be better for you to see if your network environment supports multicast than teaming the nics but yep you could do. (I've not used FOG properly before so not sure of how it would play, definitely worth a post over in the forum there)

If you have the GUI running you can export the appliance from File, Export Appliance. If it's headless, try KC's instructions there.

I don't like webmin, you could try: For now, log in via the console and do the following. sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.broken sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart This will move the previous config file to another file so when X is restarted it'll automagically detect if it can. What card is in there now? Output of lspci will do if you don't know.

It's not something daft like the ldap bind user you are using is a delegated role which can only see student users? Seeing the whole ldap config page from your moodle would be helpful.
