I hear what you're saying but "amount of HD video that the kids could ever be using" is what will change, I remember when Powerpoint was enough, then came Illuminatus, Opus, each increasing the demand and pushing the bar from the previous. The role of computing in the wider world will help drive the requirements within the education system too. Imagine what is going to happen with the Project Natal (kinetic or whatever it is now) coming out, you can imagine a PC-esque version coming along that will need some horse power. It won't be long (it might already be here!) before some shiny new app comes along specifically designed to run optimised on that cpu family and once the curriculum gets hold of it things will change.

People asked the same question about Quad Cores etc. The reality is that as demands increase (media, etc) equipment demands will grow also.

Hi Tom, I'd think of the energy bill here and buy an entry level Terminal Server personally. (or a server with a few virtualised copies of XP on so it's only 1 system left on). You can modify the "Remote Desktop Users" group which may help you in your quest. (Try this manually on a workstation first, start, run, control userpasswords) If that works as you expect we can configure this in a GPO to modify this group with a group that your users are members of. Think hard before leaving physical machines on, and think also of what happens if a student is off sick and uses the VLE to access a machine a student is trying to use in the class room itself? (I'm not looking for people to say 'because RM sucks' etc, I imagine SLT have a reason, finances perhaps (likely with talk of a CC4 upgrade), limitations of the solution etc) Ask the NM how he feels about it afterall he'll be managing it day to day. What's your role? (IE, is it fully technical or strategic?)

Hi there, In your Active Directory look at a "working" user and see if they have a profile / home directory defined and if so check this against your new user to make sure yours matches it. Hi sted, It very much depends. Some thin clients will PXE boot directly pulling down from the network and doing whatever you want based on that. (Ie, if you've put something in a kiosk script style start up with the pxe image or a file it pulls down from TFTP or so) Some will have an OS on (more likely to be referenced as chubby clients) which will let you do the local browser if you so wish (locking this down is of course important) and then have an RDP/ICA/VMWare View/XEN etc client thereon which you can configure (again it could be a config file pulled down from the server) and off it goes. Some clients just simply have an RDP client which you configure and it fires up and fires to whatever you configured (without needing PXE, Axel are a good example of these which work very well indeed) but these don't have your local browser etc, they literally connect to your TS/VDI farm and off you go. Worth doing some digging around the various options taking into account your longer term plans. There's a fair few of us on here with experience in this kind of stuff so ask lots of questions
