Without being rude have you actually received anything through the Outlook connection? Does send/receive finish with no errors? Can you show us a screenshot of your Outlook settings to see what is happening. I had until I moved jobs a few hundred Outlook users on EMBC with no problem.

Are you using pop or imap? If you send a mail to yourself from outlook do you receive it in outlook?

Hi Folks, I'm looking at how to offer set ups with a internet access via 3g in areas where there is no phone lines but plenty of 3g signal. Now, our standard network build puts the domain controller (single server set ups) on 192.168.1.2 and all clients are dhcp and I'm wondering if connecting up the 3g dongle to the domain controller and using ICS is the way to go here or whether that is going to upset client's looking for the DC on the 'wan' IP. I'm unfortunately not in a position to get this wrong as the poc deployment kit is in Africa and I'm... well, not. At the moment I am able to use the 3g dongle to get 'in' to the domain controller via Logmein and that is fine, is it really as simple as enabling 'sharing' on this connection or do I want to look at bridging it with the lan nic? Also, the connection drops a few times an hour, other than the obvious lack of connection for the downstream clients will it be as simple as redialing the connection out and the 'route' as such will become available again? Thoughts welcomed. Thanks. EDIT: At the moment I'm only able to consider a simple solution on top of the 2003 DC, I do not wish to introduce additional complexity to the set up with additional hardware or virtualised instances (I'd have done this with Smoothwall express in a heart beat otherwise) as the on site hands are trained to this standard build solely and I am not able to travel over there for some time to rebrief on changes.

Hi Bantax, Welcome to Edugeek. What are the objectives of this deployment and are you hard fixed on the C90LE 1GF (this runs Windows XP Embedded) or are you simply looking to provide thin client access to a Terminal Services type deployment? You could quite easily fit 50 users on a fairly entry level 64bit 2003/2008 Terminal Server but I'm not sure if this is the route you wish to go. Tell us a bit more about your needs and what applications you intend on running on this system. Wyse do some quite good kit but I'm not convinced if the extra cost for the XP Embedded is a sensible option if you are only going to fire to Terminal Services. Cheers, Kim

Is it two different mail systems? If so, what kind are they? Is there any link between the domains in question (trust etc). What environment does she read mail in?

I hope he sorted it with a rebuild, once a box has been rooted I wouldn't trust it within an inch of its life especially not if it's talking to your user directory.

Does the content of ipconfig /all look accurate when compared to a known working device? Can you ping the DNS server IPs? Can you ping the router? Proxy etc all correct? (Can you ping the proxy?)

Hi Johnathon, David's advice is very good also but I would add that you should think about the bigger picture of objectives/targets inclusively. Does your client wish to move to a Terminal Services environment (software compatibility needs to be tested extensively to be sure of success) or are they looking to retain the look/feel of their fat clients (ie, an XP or Windows 7 desktop). If your client is looking for TS then yes, as David said you should build up a spare box and tweak the GPOs to make it work nicely, you will have 120 days grace on the TS Licensing and need to decide whether to license per physical device (Device CAL) or actual users (User CAL) but you will have 120 days to do this and if you opt for User CALs it isn't actually enforced by MS but that isn't an excuse for not purchasing them. If you opt for Device CALS you will see them being issued out on a TS Licensing server which is good to see. (Depends upon the number of users vs machines) If on the other hand they are looking for XP/W7 desktops you should look to consider a VDI system such as Oracle VDI or VMWare View (or Citrix Xen) which can be connected to by thin clients and then of course you need to decide on which brand of thin client you are interested in as they vary extensively in cost and functionality and it's one of those decisions you can make as an all-in-one with your backend VDI/TS choice. It would be interesting to ascertain what the clients current systems are running and what they hope to achieve from this system change. There is a great deal of pressure on organisations to sweat their assets at the moment to get more out of them whilst the economic climate improves and this too may need to be factored into your thinking, ie. can you reuse old PCs as thin clients with the chosen solution to the point where only when they physically fail (PSU/MB/CPU) they are replaced with thins? Has Remote Working been discussed as a requirement? I am of course a little biased given this is what I do for a living but if you do wish to have a chat or any impartial advice drop me a line and I'll be more than happy to chat it through with you. Spam Assassin (invoked via Mail Scanner) is pretty good depending upon if you're using pyzor, dcc etc. Might be handy to show up your config (or parts of it)
