Thank you for the reply If I had a static list of fonts that the users required, then your suggestion could work. Unfortunately, the users get sent new fonts fairly regular for different project files and they need to be able to install them so they can view, edit and print. Ideally, I would like to have users able to install fonts in the standard windows way - double clicking etc. So a startup script wouldn't really work. It's annoying that Microsoft haven't seen the need for this yet - I've found many many people looking for this - why can't MS put a GPO setting for 'Install fonts on Local machine' - like they do for the drivers etc.

Thanks for your reply. My only issue with branchcache is that it refers back to the main host server on every file load to check the file hash. If the internet connection is down, then the shares/files are also down.

Hi Trying to find a non-bodge way of allowing users to install Fonts, without giving admin privileges! Thought someone may have come across a way of doing this, hopefully through GPO. We have a number of users who need to install a variety of fonts at different times as demand requires it. I don't want to give admin permissions and this is the issue. I can't install the fonts for them, as there will be too many at different times and I just don't want to add that to my management tasks. I want to be able to give them the privileges to get on with it themselves as they require it. Any help, much appreciated and was slightly surprised not to have found a thread about this. thanks

Hi all Didn't quite know what to call the thread.. We look after a special school with pupils from infants right up to secondary. We have a main site where the majority of children are, the main server (DC, files, print etc) is. We have an offsite classroom in another school and are soon adding a third classroom in a third school site! We want to keep all internet traffic coming back to the main, central site - which means we can keep a central filtering policy etc. We can configure the servers to host shares, home areas, users etc for their own sites, but there are a couple of shares held centrally on the main site that is used a lot that needs to be accessed on all sites. I'm looking for a technology/best practise to set this up so the access to central is nice and quick and available. I don't want to be hammering the WAN bandwidth too much. I've been looking into Branchcache, which seems pretty good. The drawback is that if the internet access disappears, then so does access to the shares. Is there a way to reliably replicate and keep access when internet is lost? DFS maybe? Any other ideas? This isn't something I've really explored previously.

Depends if you want to buy or a more cost effective method for this type of equipment might be to hire. How often are you going to certify cable runs? I found this company really helpful. They have all the equipment and can arrange next day delivery before 10 if required. Hire Cable Network Analysers It also has the benefit that you can try the equipment to make sure it is what you are looking for before maybe you purchase - this type of equipment can be really expensive - unless you are using it a lot and certifying cables every week I wouldn't see the benefit of buying.

OK....I've been banging my head a little with this one!! Anybody have any ideas the differences between Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Acrobat Pro for Teacher and Student? The school need Adobe Acrobat pro to edit a designed PDF school handbook. We downloaded the Pro version trial from the website and yep that's fine. This is where the fun begins.... I've contacted Phoenix for the quote and it came back more than I was expecting. Turns out that the ballpark figure the school were first given for acrobat was for the Teacher edition of Acrobat Pro. Anyway - I have taken this up with Phoenix who say the teacher edition of pro is limited - they have no definitive list of the differences, but just get told that it is limited.. I contacted Adobe in the meantime, who have said there is no difference - it's just a highly reduced cost! Have you any ideas if or what the differences might be?? Am I better off just telling the school to purchase the more expensive Pro version - 'better safe than sorry' idea. Thanks J

My Wife is a bowen therapist and has had a number of people with FM come to her. It's really helped them apparently. Obviously, because patient confidentiality I don't know all the details, but I know that it can relieve some of the pain and aches. May be worth you looking into. One of them I know as a friend, and she can't stop raving about the difference it has made to her. I've had it myself a number of times and find it helpful, it's really gentle therapy but you can tell the difference afterward.

Hi guys I've searched for this and found limited posts. The one that I thought might work hasn't, so I'm opening this thread. I'm working on a CC4 network. I've got a PC running XP SP3, Office 2003 and a server running 2003. When I open MS Access it says that there is no printer installed and won't print or open the dialogue box or the print preview. The PC has a network printer installed from the server (HP Laserjet 2600n) It's set as the default. Everything else prints to the printer fine. But Access won't print. When you hold the mouse over the print icon it says that there is no printer. If I go into Printers and Faxes and change the default printer to MS Office Document Image writer and then use Access then the print dialogue will open and you can then change it to the network printer and print. I've downloaded the latest print drivers from HP and installed them, I've deleted the printer from the server, deleted the driver and then re-installed it all with the latest driver. No success, still shows as noprinter in access. If I go to the shares and connect to the printer manually and set that network printer as the default then Access sees it fine and you can print. I'm lost. Don't know what else to look at or try. Any ideas? James

Hi I have a member of staff who runs the special unit attached to our school. She does a lot of home visits and sometimes works from home and away from the school site. She has been given a laptop to use but also has a desktop PC in the office, which she tends to use when in school. The school is on CC4, including Easylink. She has recently complained about the speed of the desktop PC (which is an older dell optiplex - Pentium D 2.6GHz and 1GB RAM). She also struggles with the use of her documents. Until very recently she has been saving all her documents onto the desktop, which is saved locally to the HDD. This worries me because of security and also backup, so I've really encouraged her to use her home area. Her laptop is CC4 build and I've allowed offline files and folders and made her home drive available offline. Trouble is that her laptop doesn't seem to come into school too often, so doesn't sync with her home folder. I'm thinking how to improve the situation and of course it all comes up with pros and cons: I could wipe both the laptop and the PC and make them vanilla XP and map the drives. But if anything gets saved on her laptop then I have no way of automatically backing up her data. I could make both Vanilla and instruct her on how to use Easylink to gain access to her documents, which means that her data is safe. But then she is restricted to using her computer with an internet connection. I could give her an encrypted external HDD but if that fails then the data is lost. I could take away her desktop and leave her with the laptop but also leave a tft monitor, keyboard and mouse on her desk for comfort. How would you do this?

I don't want to unfilter the whole site for the whole site cos that is just a risk. After discussions with the office staff, we've decided that the teachers shouldn't gain access to the staff proxy. And as Arthur says, we can't download the videos? Am I asking an impossible question? Am I just going to have to open the proxy!?

Hi All I've been looking into the use of Youtube and Youtube videos wihin school. I'm finding it to be such a minefield with copyright etc. What I want to know is if teachers can use videos from youtube to show to their students for educational purposes. Does anybody know if we can do this? Is it illegal? I'm truly getting frustrated with this topic and I keep finding differing opinions. Your help and experience would be greatly appreciated

Hi Everyone I've come back into one of my schools today and have met the new head teacher. She is known as an executive head and looks after two schools, splitting her time between the two. She has an email address for each school, which she would like to receive in one logon. I'm wondering how I could do this? I've already thought about forwarding all her emails from one account to the other and then setting up a filter to push all the emails directed to the one domain into a folder with the same name. I can see one problem with doing it, that when an email gets sent to a blanket area, which would include both heads addresses, then both emails would get filtered into the Folder. It seems like it could get confusing. I was wondering if you could think of any other ideas?

Please excuse my ignorance! And new question then...I'm looking at the 2730p at insight. I'm thinking and seeing if I can get a bit more of a bargain! Do you think I should try to get a lower price, or try to keep the same price but get Windows 7 - everything points to 7 being better equipped for the Touch interface? Or does the Vista license still come with the option of upgrading to Windows 7?

Hi I've been asked by my head teacher about buying a Touchscreen laptop, which she has seen someone else use and thinks would be useful for her lesson observations, writing notes and general use. I was shopping the other day and came across the HP TX2 and thought that it was rather well priced and the spec seemed good. The Head has also approached me with the HP 2730p, with the addition of an external DVD drive! I've been reading reviews and looking at the specs of both and I feel that I can't confidently tell her one or the other! I'd like to say the TX2 but is that just me being tight, would spending a little more be better for this, will the TX2 be quick enough do you think, with minimal lag etc?

Hey I'm trying to install Digital Blue Movie Producer in a primary school. I'm having some fun doing it! It doesn't come with it's own MSI so I have tried creating one using winstall LE. That didn't work very well so have resorted to installing it manually. Installed it as the administrator and tested it. All the drivers installed and the software worked fine. Logged on and tested it with a student account and got the message that 'in order to run this software you will need to log into the system as a user with administrator privileges.' Now any good techie should realise that giving anybody admin privileges is not a good idea, so I'm currently to figure out how to get around this. Does anybody have any ideas what the program needs administrator privileges for? The documentation suggested that it needs it for the driver install and Direct X install. But both have been installed as Admin, therefore should be ok... Any suggestions or any body who's got this software working and could help me, would be absolutley great Thanks guys
