We've now taken the plunge and are to implement Firefly for September. I take the point re SIMS going online etc but for us, waiting for another 2-3 years for it to get to that stage is too long for us to wait. 3 years is a hell of a long time in the IT industry. Firefly ticks most boxes for us and gives us that parental/pupil engagement now.........

If you can't get your head around a child theme, or don't want to go down that route right away, you could always use a CSS plugin. A good round-up of them is here: https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/live-editing-css/ Ultimately though, as @icemonkey says, a child theme is the way forward, as not only can you add custom css but also functions/custom code. In my other life, I do freelance Wordpress work, so drop me a pm if you need any help.

Hi all, With the looming GDPR only a week away, I wondered what everyone's strategy was with dealing with a subject access request and specifically, how to search a Windows Server based network for files that contain personal data. I know there are 3rd party tools that can search within files for specific keywords etc but what's the best way to do this in Windows? Does anyone plan on using the File Classification in FSRM, or is there a better way?

Hi all, I'm trying to set up the G Suite Password Sync tool, to integrate with our AD accounts. I've gone through the process of creating a service account and giving correct API SDK etc etc but when I try to load the json file thats created when setting up the service account I just get a message "Service Account not authorized in the admin console". I've been through the setup a few times now and recreated it all but I just can't get it to work. Probably me being thick but has anyone else had any issues with doing this?

I'm having a similar problem, running a SIMS report, whilst Netsupport DNA console is open (v 4.60.1.785). As soon as I close down DNA console, the report exports to Excel fine. Looks like the latest version of Netsupport has reintroduced this problem.

Some reports that Delprof2 doesn't work reliably with Windows 10, although I've not tested it properly here. Can you not just utilise Group Policy? https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/28647.how-to-automatically-delete-user-profiles-older-than-a-certain-number-of-days-using-group-policy.aspx

I agree. On our Sophos UTM, we have static routes for each VLAN, that have the core switch as the gateway.

Can you ping a PC on the same subnet as your default gateway? Sometimes gateways/firewalls are configured not to respond to pings.

We are looking at the best way to publish our calendar online. We currently have a Wordpress website and my thoughts are to import a Google Calendar using a plugin, or simply embed it in a page. We are also looking at Firefly and if their Calendar works well, then that might be the best option. Would appreciate if anybody can share how they publish their calendars. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, that sounds perfect. I've no experience in Profile Manager - whereabouts do I configure this? Thanks in advance.

Can I do this dynamically on the Mac then? So no matter who logs on, it gets their home folder? So something like \\serrvername\%username%$
-
Do you mean in AD? Yes, it's configured in there (on the profiles tab). Do I need to set it elsewhere?

Hi all, I've read lots of stuff about getting user Active Directory/MS home folders to show up in MacOS but I can't get a good way of this working. Does anyone have a step by step guide on how to get this working with High Sierra? Thanks in advance.

Don't know of any repair companies but replacing the controller sometimes fixes duff boards: https://www.primaryict.co.uk/smart-replacement-fru-sc12-master-controller-for-600-series-smart-boards_fru-sc12a-sb600-st61340_4198.htm?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8-vA37OO2QIVYbftCh2OfARVEAYYASABEgICjvD_BwE

+1 for Planet eStream. Not cheap, but when you consider it comes with media library, live streaming, lesson observation etc it's a compelling product.

We are looking at parental engagement at the moment. Looking at the following: Schoolcomms Groupcall Sims InTouch Firefly We currently use Clarioncall for SMS/email and SIMS Learning Gateway for parent portal. Firefly is currently the frontrunner for us as it will allow us to consolidate our VLE and parental/staff portals, all under one roof. No SMS facility but messaging is built into the website/app.

Hi all, We are looking to refresh some of our ancient classroom PCs with new models. We've always bought Dell/HP before but I've noticed that Lenovo seem to have some good deals at the moment. Does anyone have any experience of their SFF models, particularly their reliability and build quality, compared to HP/Dell SFF models? Thanks in advance. Michael

Have sent a PM, if you wouldn't mind sending me your GPO? Thanks in advance.

Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware - What do you use?

+1 for Sophos Central and Intercept X. Long time user of SEC but Central is so much easier to manage. -
I've had a similar issue with Iphones. Solution for me was to back them up via Itunes/Icloud, wipe completely and set up as new device, then restore from the backup.

Sophos UTM SSL VPN here. Works brilliantly.

Which wireless network provider would you recommend?
colly72 replied to tj2419's topic in Wireless Networks
We use Meraki here. We've had it for around 18 months now, with around 50 APs and it's been great for us and worked really well for our BYOD devices. The dashboard makes it so simple to use and we found it easier to manage when we looked at alternatives such as Ruckus, Meru, Aerohive etc. -
Hi all, We are considering Firefly, as a solution to our parental engagement (publishing behaviour, attendance, reports from SIMS, messaging etc) but also to replace Moodle as a VLE. Does anyone here use it and if so, could you let me know how well it works, if parents use the app, etc. The last thing I want is to spend a considerable amount of money on a white elephant! Any information gratefully received. Thanks, Michael

I looked at that too but too expensive for us with a number of Mac users.- 21 replies

GDPR - Network & Systems Security

We've just implemented Bitlocker and have had frustrations with staff who use Macs. We've provided 2 alternatives - 1 buy a USB drive with built in encryption that works on PC and Mac (e.g. https://www.mymemory.co.uk/integral-32gb-secure-key-encrypted-usb-flash-drive.html), or use something like Veracrypt, although this needs to be installed on all PCs where the USB drive is used, which makes it a pain. Ultimately, I want to ban the things and just use OneDrive/Office 365.- 21 replies
