We use Wordpress together with custom posts. The staff member responsible for posting the announcements adds a new custom post, and also sets a scheduled publishing date (optional) and and expiry date (using the post expirator plugin). We then use Revolution Slider to format the posts/announcements and display them in a nice slider format, on our intranet home page. Works really well for us.

Will this fix the problem with scheduled power on/off not working on 4.5? That's been an issue for us since we updated to 4.5.

Hi all, We are currently reviewing our policy in terms of PCs installed around school and specifically, the issue of locking PCs/laptops, when teachers and other staff are not using them. At the moment, we state in the staff handbook that PCs should always be locked when not in use but we don't actively enforce this, with something like Group Policy, as this has caused issues in the past, with staff leaving PCs logged in, then other staff not being able to use them and also PCs being locked half way through lessons. I'm trying to establish what other schools do to mitigate the issue, whilst also stopping teachers being at my door every few minutes because the PC has locked automatically. Does anyone have any good practice that they could share? Thanks in advance.

I agree. If it's a personal device, then it shouldn't be added to the domain. Here, we would allow it to connect via wifi to our BYOD VLAN, separate from the rest of the LAN and giving internet access only. In addition, we don't provide support for personal devices but aim to assist where possible. It's a can of worms, accepting responsibility for the myriad of different personal devices that staff might have. If you have an acceptable use/BYOD policy that covers this, I'd refer him to that. If not, then maybe you should think about creating one.

Veeam are currently doing a free 1 year license for Office 365 email backup, for existing customers. Doesn't backup Sharepoint/Onedrive at the moment though, I don't think.

We have a Wordpress-based website. All our news stories are automatically posted to Twitter & Facebook, using the SNAP plugin, which reduces the workload massively. Then, we also have one member of staff who is also able to manually post stories, posts etc to our official school Twitter/Facebook pages. We also have a number of departmental Twitter pages, which each department posts to from time to time. As an independent school, we've made great efforts to maxmise our social media presence and it has made a big difference to the way our school is promoted and perceived. Although we do monitor our feeds, we've had very little negative/offensive comments, so the good definitely outweighs the bad for us.

As @kearton, we use Sophos SPX encryption, built into our UTM. Works really well and is simple for end users, especially if installing the Outlook Add-On.

For our staff notices/bulletins, we use a Wordpress based intranet, that has a graphical slider that is able to display custom notices. It's simple then for a member of staff to add a notice to the slider and all staff have the intranet as their home page, so they will hopefully see it!

If you can, go virtual every time. As @steveg says, the ability to restore the full server in the event of a disaster in minutes, is reason alone. We virtualised it around a year ago and haven't looked back.

We use Veeam Backup Essentials here, backing up to multiple NAS drives in physically different parts of the school. Works brilliantly for us.....

9.501-5 is still pretty buggy by all accounts, which may or may not be the cause of your issue. If possible I'd try and rollback to 9.413-4 to see if the problem still exists. Appreciate it's not always easy to rollback in a live environment though.......
