  1. Could strengthen AMDs position as far as CPU sockets go - right now its a matter of AM3+ for traditional CPUs (which is largely compatible with AM3 a design from 2009!) and FM2 for the latest Fusion APUs (although it was a pain them ditching FM1 so soon!). Compare this to the massive number of Intel Sockets since 2009 (a quick Google says its 5) and especially if this soldering goes ahead...
  2. Have long thought about doing something along the same lines here - with DirectAccess (seamless VPN) setup as well now it would be as easy as anything for our staff to get to it. I think a key factor in it being a success or not would be does it work with single sign or or will they have to remember yet another username and password to get into it.... Either way would love to see how this thread develops.
  3. What do they want to put in their MIS should be the first question... If its nice and simple you maybe able to use something like Visual Studio Lightswitch to mash together a web based database.
  4. One single LUN with all the storage on RAID5 in our case - Server 2008 R2 then does the GPT stuff.
  5. UKWSD are the ones I go for - UK Web Hosting - Web hosting Services - UK Reseller Hosting price is a tad higher than most but you get a whole load of features out of the box and a fantastic control panel (cPanel) to look after them with. Their support is the best support for any product I have ever had as well - email only but they get back to you in minutes and the guys at the other end certainly know their stuff.
  6. Nice setup We've got a iSCSI QNAP box running the backup (WSB) for a primary of ours - just fire and forget once its up and running.
  7. Our DPM 2012 install has got access to a 6.6TB local storage drive - set the drive to GPT (compared to MBR) and you won't get any issues with 2TB.
  8. The find and more importantly free Home Access Plus+ (Home Access Plus+ - Home) from @nickbro does pretty much the same thing
  9. How much you looking to spend? Rack or Tower? You will want to think of RAID as well - I know its a basic little box but why take the risk
  10. DPM is cheap and easy to put in place Does Hyper-V snapshots so you can restore entire machines to a Hyper-V host in minutes as well as volume/file based backup/restore. SQL backup/restore is part of it as well. We built a custom storage box for our DPM server - 8x1TB HDDs in a 2U case with a AMD mobo and SSD sitting behind it (short term backup) which then talks to our older tape drive which does our monthly stuff. I would strongly suggest a separate HDD/SSD for the OS partition - this makes sure that SQL operations on the server do not slow down the backup.
  11. Yep works fine with PAC and WPAD just fine
  12. Another case of people putting BETA on things because it looks cool
  13. I've got one of these - Leatherman® Skeletool CX Multi Tool - Multi Tools from Leatherman® Store UK Great for its knife, bottle opener and pliers but useless for everything else (but it looks and feels AWESOME so that’s why I go it) If the person needs something with more tools on though this is not the one to go for...
  14. Same access externally as they get internal here as well. Have had a bit of extra piece of mind since we mixed in security certs into the authentication process of our remote PCs as well – this way even if someone were to figure out a staff members password they would need a valid AD security cert to actually connect.
  15. Well I know some people have been having problems but my touch cover is just fine No splits or anything.
  16. Working good here with a Secure 2010 installation and a Office 365 install as well
  17. Not XenServer but Hyper-V but at least it gives you an idea of what can be done- Series: Virtual Desktops on PCI-E SSD « my world of IT Other than that you could look at one of the uberly expensive SSD based SANs that are going around these days.
  18. I know the names of about 3 of the IT club members (about 20 students) but the other 810 are unkown to me! Now when it comes to Air Cadets I know most of their names and even some of the ones from other units.
  19. What do you want to know about it?
  20. Want to see a bit more gaming on a Surface RT - well here you go!
  21. Modern IE 10 (the main one from the start screen) works with Proxys just the same as Windows 7 and Windows 8 - we use TMG here and it blocks things just as well although I haven't looked much into authentication methods yet (will do though). Will do some testing with Metro style applications however the best way you can test would just be to fire up a Win 8 VM (use a trial edition if you don't have VL) and that will work just the same as a Windows RT tablet. With our WPAD settings proxy detection is automatic and seamless.
  22. Nice post there Working on the next Fitzharrys Demo day as we speak I'm certainly one for showing what is possible to other schools however I do still get the feeling that plenty of other schools just don't want to take part in these kinds of events - we invite local schools (Oxfordshire) to every event and I get more from London than I do else ware.
  23. PRTG can create pretty nice status displays not free but fairly priced.
  24. £416 ex VAT - Acer Iconia W510 10.1" Windows 8 Tablet - NT.L0MEK.002 with keyboard - Scan.co.uk SSD space is limited though so it maybe one for a good Citrix back end for full fat applications.
  25. Using a Xbox 360 Controller with Surface RT....I think so! More in depth look at games coming soon
