  1. Hello, We are looking at re-furbishing our ICT suite and replacing PC's in school etc... and wondered what the cost may be to implement some kind of virtual computing environment? Our network is getting a bit full and the cost of installing new network points and switches, new computers etc... would be quite high. What would it be weighed against developing a virtual computing environment? Am I correct in thinking that if we have a virtual server a workstation could log on and use any operating system? Also- would all users see the same desktop and be able to use the same programs? I have more questions for later... J x
  2. What do you mean by caps? We have one doing this- is it easily repairable??
  3. Hi there, I was wondering if there were any 'Education Friendly' blog sites out there that aren't blocked by the local authority? We want a blog that we can embed into our school website but we're struggling to find one... Any advice?
  4. Bumpety bump! After reading all these higgeldy piggeldy posts and not really understanding any of it- does anyone have a simple, step-by-step way of deploying Quicktime over the network using Group Policy? I've used Advanced Installer to create an MSI after installing quicktime on a pc but i'm not sure if this is the best way of doing it. J
  5. It's redirecting to the users home directory
  6. Hmm...haven't got a clue what securus is. Not running that. The My Documents folder is re-directed but if you open the network share- everything is fine. If you open the My Documents shortcut- 'windows encountered an error' blah blah...
  7. Hi folks, Windows crashes whenever I open My Documents yet when I open it from somewhere else (i.e. My Computer) it's fine. It just seems to be doing it when I open it via the start menu. Any ideas? I've tried sfc /scannow but alas I don't have the original XP disk (we're a school and they don't keep things like that...doh!) so I can't run that. J x
  8. Whoa!! This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for!
  9. I've just found that a computer wasn't getting an IP address when all the other machines in the ICT suite were logged on. When I logged them off...it had one assigned. Any ideas?
  10. I've been looking at the network activity on our server and there seems to a regular peak between 25% and 50% every 5 or so seconds. Also- on our switches ALL the lights occasionally blink together at once. Is this normal?
  11. Now we do have a Brother network printer... think it could be that?? It seemed to start since installing it. There are a MILLION network settings on it though. Is there anything on this that you think could affect it? NETBIOS/IP is enabled. Is this necessary? Could this be the issue? The following other things are enabled too: SNMP, TFTP, IPP Port 631, Telnet, LPD My knowledge of network protocols doesn't stretch to these yet...
  12. Where can I find this and what would be the best process of doing it?
  13. Our server seems to be dishing out IP addresses REALLY slowly and consequently our computers are throwing back 'limited or no connectivity'. Is there any way I can sort this out? It's causing a few problems and has only just begun recently...
  14. Hi, One of our users recently encountered an error in logging onto the domain. It says that on the profile path there is a .V2 folder that cannot be copied. I've logged onto our server, found it in the profile folder and tried to delete it...no go. Logged on as administrator it says 'access denied' and also I cannot alter any security settings on it or anything. What the heck is it??? Hope you can help!!
  15. Hi! I am trying to make a simple 'choice page' where our students can pick a maximum of 3 things they are interested in and it brings back results based on their choices... e.g Student chooses 'making things' and 'discovery' and it brings back the results: Art Club, Magazine Club and Cooking Club Is there a REALLY simple way to do this? For some reason my brain can't grasp the concept today!
  16. Thank you for looking Topsy Nana! I've actually just this moment managed to install Win 7 and found some drivers on the Tosh site so I should be ok. Thanks again for your help!! xxx
  17. That would be fantastic x Thanks a lot
  18. Hi folks, Does anyone have a recovery disk for the Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 they'd like to share with me? x I'd be very grateful J x
  19. Fantastic I managed to do this with ease. The best way I found was just removing the fan section. You can get to the switch easily that way x
  20. I've actually just come across this on our new Brother printer whilst delving into its myriad of settings- did you mention something about mDNS?? Here's a screenshot to see if any of these enabled things could be causing a problem.
  21. Hmmm... well as I was looking at the IP addresses that have been assigned by our server I came across a print server. Not our new printer but one i have never seen before. I have a feeling it's been there since I arrived but i've never noticed it. I have no idea where it could be in our school but i'm going to hunt it down and ELIMINATE it! Hehe!! If I can find it... I'll keep you up to date. Thanks for your advice djm- it's something worth doing but unfortunately not something i can really do while school is open. Holidays soon...
  22. I'm really, really grateful for all your help so far I can't see it being the network cards personally. It seems to have occurred all of a sudden after having network switches changed / new printer. Working out why they may be doing it is difficult because it could be all sorts. From what I can tell the server could be a bit slow at assigning IP addresses and then the PC's are timing out and getting 'limited or no connectivity'. I wonder if this could be the issue?
  23. There don't seem to be any entries relating to DHCP (so i assume that's a good thing). The only errors to note really are 'Windows Update' entries- where the clients aren't updating.
  24. Checked all that as per your recommendation- all looks fine. Things match up. Only one IP listed. I've also deleted the records and re-registered the DNS on the machine.
  25. No just one DHCP server. The same server is also running DNS. We're only a primary school
