Performance improved but no where near to the standards it was before the recent upgrade. One of the issues I think was that for us the staff log into SIMs at the beginning of the lessons all at the same time to take the registers so that initial query was still being run by ~100 people at the same time. They'd close SIMs and the same would happen at the beginning of the next lesson next time they logged in!

There was a sticky on support net with all the details in but I can't seem to log into it at the moment. Seems to not be letting me log in... Anyone else having issues getting onto support net?

Been looking up SCCM 2012 over the last few weeks and looks like it will do everything we want it to do... and more. But I will admit it does seem a lot more complicated and indepth as opposed to our normal Windows XP Sysprepped Images. Would people on here recommend SCCM? Or is it overkill and something like SPECOPS \ MDT would be more suited for a secondary school? The main reasons I like SCCM is it's not just deployment... but also software distribution, WSUS and inventorying as well all in one. I also love the idea of SCCM Endpoint Protection. But again... do people this this is overkill?

Well now or never. Sometimes with things like this you can never be 100% sure but the fact it's not been edited since 2005 is a good indication it's not massively in use. Sometimes you don't know what you have until it breaks! At least if something does break you'll know what it is at last

Can you use ADSIedit to look at the information stored in the partition?

Phil, I'm a bit disappointed that the update has been released so late on a Friday afternoon meaning we have to wait until Tuesday for the service desk to reopen to enable us to request it... in reality this means we can't run it until Tuesday evening which means another day with SIMs barely working at all.

I've not done this before! I have a new SQL server set up. Is there a guide or list of best practices to follow for doing this at all? Even better a SIMs Guide for doing so would be great. Any suggestions?

Windows XP although moving to Windows 7. It may be quicker on Windows 7. I will investigate when we get there. However I imagine the initial "sync" on 200gig is still likely to take some time! Other solutions I've heard include... * Everything is saved locally and users can run a batch file to "back up" their data to the server. * Users have a folder within their homearea they can copy files to they want to work offline. Anything within that folder gets sync'd. Anything outside gets saved on the server only. * No home areas whatsoever out of work and the only way to access their files is via remote access to the school resources. Anyone use any of the above at all? I'm not particarily sold on any of them. Offline Files seems to be the ideal way to do things although have issues with time spent synching at the moment.

For as long as I can remember we've been using Offline Files on their home directories meaning when they log on of off the laptop automatically "synchronise" their home areas with the file server. This used to work quite well but over the last few years as home areas have grown some people are having to wait 10-15 minutes every logon and logoff while their home are synchronises. I was just wondering how other people handle staff home directories on laptops and manage to keep logon and logoff times low?

What VLE are you using? I did send an e-mail asking but didn't get a response. -
CISCO Training and relevance to other networking kit??
Sam_Brown replied to Sam_Brown's topic in Wired Networks
Thank you guys for all your help. Been very informative. -
Apologies, I didn't know where else to put this... Thinking about taking the CCENT course with the plan to be CCNA. A lot of the course seems to focus on the CLI for Cisco kit. How transferable are the skills for Cisco CLI to other routers and switches?

Morning All, Our old way of deploying Windows XP was to build an image, create a Sysprep.inf file to hold all the details like serial key, joining domain details etc, copy Sysprep to the image and run it. We'd then be able to capture the XP image. Deploying was easy. You'd PXE boot into WDS. Format the hard disk and select the image you'd want to deploy. It would download the image and then on first boot you could give it a computer name and set the local administrator password and you were good to go. Is there a similar way to do this for Windows 7 at all? I can run Sysprep to return Windows 7 to OOBE. I can capture it and then deploy it but then it will return to the normal first run screen. No options to add serial key or join to the domain. Is there a way to have it automatically join the domain, set a windows key and ask for a computer name while automating everything else?

Trying to Smart Client a brand new out of the box Windows 7 Professional Laptop (have removed most of the crap that came pre-installed like McAffee \ Norton etc). Copy Smart Client to the Laptop and run it as administration. Stick in CC4 server, domain details. Everything goes well, it resets and then I get an error message telling me it can't continue because I'm not logged on as an Administratior! I log on as domain\systemadmin and I get the same error. I log on as local administrator which I've also renamed to systemadmin and no luck! Both have full admin rights over the laptop and obviously the domain\systemadmin account is a domain administrator. When I reset it and it finally allows me to log on properly I find it's joined the domain perfectly fine and I can log on with domain accounts however apart from that no other changes. Any ideas? Is this a common issue? I'm tempted to just rebuild from scratch using CC4 but wanted to try and avoid having to source out all the drivers one by one to allow me to do so.

Northants behaviour reporting (SIMS)

I got a RPT file e-mailed to me from Capita a little while back if you'd still like it. -
Morning Guys, Did the Winter Upgrade just before we broke up and came back expecting RM to have released the CC4 Winter Release Packages but I don't seem to be able to find it anywhere on the RM online support. Am I being blind? Or have they not released them yet? Am I silly to expect them to have released them so soon? Also, and the main issue, is the CC4 Laptops aren't upgrading SIMs automatically. I went through all the steps in the RM documentation however they won't upgrade to the newer version unless I log on with Admin rights. Is there an easy fix to this or is upgrading the SIMs clients manually to be expected?!?!

Morning Guys, Does anyone here have any solutions to getting Sun Global Desktop working on Macs at all? SGD is our remote access solution we use to allow students and staff to work from home however we've had little to no luck getting it working on our new MacBook Airs (OSX 10.8). Hoping someone here has some experience with it!

Northants behaviour reporting (SIMS)
Sam_Brown replied to synaesthesia's topic in East Midlands Broadband Consortium (EMBC)
The reason it won't work for us apparently is we have the SQL on a different Server to SIMs. I have requested a RptDef from Capita only to be told one doesn't exist and wouldn't work anyway due to the nature of the report! I've been sent a nice PDF with a list of fields that need to be in the report but I dont seem to be able to create a report based on them for some reason... Happy days. -

Did you ever find the report at all? We're in a similar position where we need to run the report manually because SINFO won't work on our system. I have been given a 4 page PDF from someone at Capita saying what fields need to be in the report however creating the report is proving to be a right pain. -
Trying to do it here at the moment and it keeps on crashing while trying to sequence it.
